That banks save England losing to the west Germans
And that Brazil team in the final. Sat in awe and sat to my dad “wow why don’t we play football like this?” His reply “I know son, they should stop messing about and just get to a big lad up front”

I won a Nabisco World Cup paperback before the tournament for booting a football through a car tyre. It was rubbish. Chief memory was the disappointment of the West Germany game. That and my mum saying Bobby Moore was guilty of theft because he had shifty eyes.
The world was black and white in those days and the tv needed a thump on the top, a third of the way in from the left, to fire it into life sometimes. But it behaved in the World Cup well enough.
Ahh, Rivellino, Jairzinho, Tostao and the greatest of them all, Pele. The best team ever.

1966 - watched every England match with my late father. Loved it ! I had a wall chart from the Radio Times which I religiously filled in after every match.

Peru with their sash strip and Argentina (allegedly) bribing their way through. Netherlands with their total football. Tickertape all over the pitch. Archie Gemmell. TV coverage felt like it was coming from another planet.

Spain 1982. I was alive for 74 and 78 but don't recall them.
Just seen that the book I got from Solar on Sproughton Road for about 30p is going for nearly 25 quid on Amazon.
82 for me too. Back then package holidays were much rarer and going overseas was a novelty. Just seeing another country and how different it was to England was great. There were also only 3 tv channels back then so the world was a much bigger place. We didn't have many travels shows and Spain looked great. Also it had been a number of years since Brazil had won it and they had that great team... Falcoa, Socrates and Zico to name just three
So ultimately that world cup really opened my eyes to what a different world we lived in. Enjoyed thinking about some of that.

The Danish Dynamite team. The legendary Brazil-France quarter final (Zico and Socrates v Platini, Giresse and Tigana, both teams going at it hammer and tongs). A fine Belgian side led by Enzo Scifo. The emergence of Gary Lineker as a genuine star (and Golden Boot winner).
But of course it was really only about one man, and THAT quarter final. The Hand of God followed by probably the greatest goal of all time (poor old Terry Fenwick tried to tackle him twice), all in the burning heat of the Azteca. Surely the greatest footballer to ever walk the face of the earth, and what a horrible privilege it was to watch him run us ragged.
RIP Diego, you cheeky little genius.

Josimar was another star of the 1986 World Cup.
The first marauding full-back I can really remember seeing.
Scored a couple of belting goals too, one of them past Pat Jennings.
1986 for me and the hand of god and Butcher's head wound. We were living abroad for the 1982 - sure would have watched it as dad would have had it on, but can't remember.

So many memories, it was extra special because as a kid and living in a time when there were 2-3 live games on TV a season max having a few matches on TV every day was like heaven.
My most vivid memory is actually the daily routine of running home from school fast as anything so I missed the least of the afternoon kick off. Could usually get home before 10 minutes was on the clock! I've spoken to a few people my age and they have memory of the 'school dash' too!
I could also never get my head around England not going through despite not losing a game.

Spain 82. I don’t think we had a tele in 78, but I remember seeing pictures of all the ticket tape in Argentina. Must have been in the papers. I was only just starting to get into playing football in 78 and then by 82 was obsessed, so I watched everything I could. Having so many of our boys in the English and Scottish squads made it pretty special.

Yes, another great memory from that World Cup - there was actually an Irish film made called Shooting For Socrates, all about the build-up to that game.
Poor old Scotland as well - a decent Scottish side, managed by Sir Alex Ferguson, got stuck with a group containing West Germany, Denmark and Uruguay. I might be wrong, but I think that was the first popular use of the term 'Group of Death'.

1966 - watching Brazil training. Watching the final in b/w. Going to the cinema to watch 'Goal. The 1966 World Cup' some of which was n full Technicolour. Making my dad promise to take me to a football match for my 6th birthday, which he duly obliged and took me to my first Ipswich game. All because I fell in love with football aged 5.

Was Ferguson only appointed on an interim basis? His time with Scotland seemed to overlap with replacing Atkinson at Old Trafford. Seem to recall him stepping in after the sad death of Jock Stein after a qualifying match.

That was the double group phase thing wasn't it? No surprise that was canned.
The thing I most remember was Keegan's fluffed header from Robson's cross against Spain.

Can't remember who came in full-time though.
Yes, Ferguson took the job on an interim basis for that tournament only, following the tragic death of Jock Stein during the final qualifier. Ferguson started at United that summer following the World Cup.
Think the Scots appointed Andy Roxburgh after that possibly?

Yes. It was Roxburgh (just did a wiki search). I did wonder if it was him but in my head, he was more early 90s than mid 80s.
