Many of us including me said much the same in December 2021.

We were league 1 then though. Massive difference this time.

No one we end up with is going to be an upgrade on McKenna- in any shape or form.

He only needs to keep us up next season to be an upgrade. Not impossible, but going to be difficult.

I’ll take anyone who is an upgrade on McKenna

Any suggestions Mullers?

Frank would be good, I like the idea of knutsen as both open us up to bigger markets for players.

Dyche wouldn’t be popular but he’s a level above McKenna in terms of keeping teams up. Same as O’Neil who I would hate.

All depends what budgets the clubs are offering and if the manager can work with Ashton I guess as to who we can attract.

Anthony Barry would be my top pick but obviously this bloody World Cup is creating a problem for this to work out as I think he’d be equally keen to come to us.

I'm pretty sure he'd be the leading contender if it wasn't for the World Cup.

Any chance you think it still happens Phil, with Pert looking after things until he gets back? Or have we moved on already

Somewhat against the tide, I think Amorim would do well here.

In terms of upgrading on McKenna, I think Carlos Cuesta is one who would give that a fair rattle. He’s become my preferred, albeit seemingly unlikely, option.

I'd agree, and I think Amorim is actually suited to the task we need, rather than what United wanted. But, I suspect he is tainted in the eyes of the bleeding knuckles brigade. The second he loses a couple they'd be all over it.

Likewise, you can already see who is so wedded to Mckenna rather than the club that whoever comes in won't measure up.

Thomas Frank would be my choice ,I know he has said he is resting at the moment, but I think he fits the profile we are looking for and should go the extra mile to entice him back to management.

I liked McKenna, quite a bit, but you’re absolutely right, we must look ahead and the club comes first. I heard something about why he opted to step down, and I hope everything works out well for him in time. But the past is not to be indulged, especially given the task in hand this season.

We never looked like we could survive last time round, and I was a bit of a doubting Thomas at times this season. So the change we face isn’t some abyss. It’s a challenge, and one we must all face up to.

Amorim or Cuesta and I’ll be well happy. And patient. I learned to do that after Bobby. And when Mariner became a Gunner. And more. I think we’ll have our new man this time next week.

I've got two preferences ahead of him, but whoever it turns out to be will get my backing, as I want the club to be successful, and in order to do that, the manager has to be successful too. He's more likely to do that with the backing of everyone than otherwise. Whatever anyone may think of MA, he's spot on with the idea that we're far more likely to succeed with everyone pulling in the same direction than not.

I’d like Frank or Knutsen, or failing that OGS, I’d prefer Cochrane over Barry if we were going for a top coach without management experience, but that seems a huge risk now compared to when we were in league one.

The list of managers who:

a) have PL experience
b) are looking for work or willing to leave for Ipswich
c) are half decent

Is pretty small, no?

There’s that fella that just left Man City? If they let him go he can’t be up to much and so may be grateful for an offer from us.

I'd really hope we'd make a take notice appointment, go and find our Emery. I know thats a really ambitious thing to say but given what KM was on we have a healthy wage to offer a really good manager. I'm not asking for Klopp but some ambition.

Ultimately even if Pep were to take it, its always a risk but its about degrees.

Knutsen, I'm not against it, some good results Bodo look decent but under a particular set of circumstances and no top league experience, for every Mourhino or Klopp there is a Ten Haag or Vilas Boas.

Barry, a far easier appointment in L1 or even the championship, again, not against it but no managerial experience. Good coaches dont automatically make good managers. Peter Grant was a good coach, Les Parry was a good coach, Steve Mclaren.

Either of the above could be brilliant appointments but I'd love to see us go for someone Julien Shuster, I think the Geman League is probably the most similar to ours stylistically, makes a transition easier, done a great job with Frieberg who arent traditionally one of the big German clubs

If he wasnt so dislikeable I'd say go for someone like Conte but he'll throw his toys out of the pram at nothing but I do think that's the kind of level/profile we could look at

I am pretty open minded, except not really liking the idea of a Dyche type character. I dont want to be Everton, NF or Wolves, it has too many similarities with an era not to be raised by me. If we are to go down we go down balancing pragmatic with the ambition and hope that we can build a team to play football at the level. That is because we will need player capable of winning many games the following season, we very nearly cocked that up this season.

My preference would be Frank who I think would give us the best chance of achieving stability in the Premier League. He is thoughtful and articulate in the mould of McKenna and would be a great fit for the club. I would also be happy with OGS who would perhaps provide some continuity given his close ties with McKenna. Knutsen would be a risk, but I wouldn't be averse to that; certainly preferable to any of the more established run-of-the-mill choices on the manager merry-go-round.

If he's interested then out of everyone linked I'd quite like this. It is a risk, obviously Bodo have geographical and pitch advantages and he doesn't know the prem but one worth taking.

Failing that I guess OGS or wildcard option of Robbie Keane.

I personally don’t see the massive love in for Frank? Done a good job at a well oiled structure at Brentford, and the first job he gets with a bit make control he shat the bed at Spurs.

Why would you swap Champions League football for a relegation scrap?

Don’t know about that. He did a decent job at Brondby. Took them over at a difficult time and stabilised them. He’s a great player developer, man manager and I think he would do very well in the set up here. It would be considered a coup by most in the football world if we got him here but it won’t happen.
