I wouldn't say it was previously "denying" anything. It was what it always have been. Where do you draw the line? Abandon all qualifiers and let absolutely everyone play in the World Cup?
It's a bit like the Champions League, Europa and now Conference Leagues. It's just about expanding it to make more money and devalue the competition as you're letting more and more into it. The club European competition format is ridiculous, imo.

People rightly moan that FIFA is corrupt & greedy - yet when they do actually introduce something that in the long run is likely to be a positive for football generally, people moan even more!
Anyway, hands up to my own hypocrisy. Though I said it was a WC I'd probably mostly swerve because of Fifa corruption, greed, the USA & T rump being a host, then ticket prices; then visas denied to perfectly decent fans & a good referee etc., I'm in need of distractions, have seen something of all but the 2am games so far, and am loving it! And some of the stadiums are amazing. | |
