Minor irritations about the World Cup so far 18:02 - Jun 14 with 4330 viewsIllinoisblue

That bit when the three VAR refs are introduced.

The game turning into quarters. How the fk has this happened? It’s not even that hot in the U.S. in June.

The high camera angle making the Netherlands kit look as though the players are from a badly animated console game.

My only irritant is when the camera pans to a bunch of celebrities high-fiving one another when they know that they are in shot.

In true WC tradition the director should only show close-ups of really attractive women with big tits wearing low cut or tight tops.

If you enjoy watching Haiti, Scotland, Australia, Qatar, South Africa and the others ranked 50-80 then crack on, I don’t want to spoil your fun.

We finally got two decent teams tonight for the second time this tournament and a game took place.

I apologise for wanting the best in world football at a World Cup not Cape Verde, Haiti, Curacao, Jordan and Uzbekistan.

48 teams is pants thus far.

I think that is a rather elitist attitude.

Joint-statement from Cape Verde, Curaçao, Uzbekistan, Congo, Haiti, Algeria, Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, Ghana, Senegal, South Africa and Côte d’Ivoire expressing their “profound disappointment” following the recent comments made by UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin arguing the expanded World Cup will create “uninteresting” games.

“We respectfully but firmly reject these comments.

“For our countries, there is no such thing as an unimportant World Cup match.

“For Cape Verde, Curaçao and Uzbekistan, qualification for the FIFA World Cup represents a historic achievement and the realization of a dream shared by generations.

“For nations such as Congo and Haiti, returning to football’s biggest stage after a long absence carries a special meaning for millions of supporters who have waited years, and in some cases decades, for this moment.

“To suggest that these matches are somehow less important is deeply disappointing and fails to recognize the efforts, sacrifices and aspirations of players, coaches, clubs, football leaders and supporters across the world.

“Behind every qualification stand years of work and investment. Behind every national team stand entire communities and millions of people who see football as a source of pride, hope and unity.

“Football does not belong to a select group of nations. Its strength comes from its universality. The FIFA World Cup is the world’s greatest football competition precisely because it brings together different cultures, different histories and different football journeys.

“For many countries, participation in the FIFA World Cup is not only a sporting achievement. It is a moment that inspires a generation, accelerates football development and creates memories that last a lifetime.

“We believe that every nation that qualifies deserves respect. Every team has earned its place on merit. Every supporter has the right to dream. Every match carries meaning for millions of people around the world.

“We therefore reject the UEFA President’s comments and reaffirm our belief that the growth of football must continue to create opportunities, inspire new generations and strengthen the truly global nature of our game.

“Every team qualified on merit.

“Every match matters.”

Well said.

Was going to post something similar along the lines of every country deserving the chance to improve & arrive at the level and quality that 'old' footballing nations have achieved after centuries of playing.

To deny them that reminds me of the arrogant, dismissive comments that females have had to put up with now that FAs have deigned to allow them to play professionally.

Pulling up the drawbridge by fans of nations who already have plenty of experience, history and achievement is just unacceptable prejudice &
elitism.

That Ecuador is spelled with a ‘C’. Unsatisfying. Would make so much more sense with ‘Q’.

Netherlands’ luminous kit. What happened to the subtle orange of the 80s? Horrible.

The countdowns to the kick offs. Grow up.

I wouldn't say it was previously "denying" anything. It was what it always have been. Where do you draw the line? Abandon all qualifiers and let absolutely everyone play in the World Cup?

It's a bit like the Champions League, Europa and now Conference Leagues. It's just about expanding it to make more money and devalue the competition as you're letting more and more into it. The club European competition format is ridiculous, imo.

How many different and extensive European competitions do you want/need?!

People rightly moan that FIFA is corrupt & greedy - yet when they do actually introduce something that in the long run is likely to be a positive for football generally, people moan even more!

Anyway, hands up to my own hypocrisy. Though I said it was a WC I'd probably mostly swerve because of Fifa corruption, greed, the USA & T rump being a host, then ticket prices; then visas denied to perfectly decent fans & a good referee etc., I'm in need of distractions, have seen something of all but the 2am games so far, and am loving it! And some of the stadiums are amazing.
