Had two good games for us in 1996/97 and never got a look in again after, thought he was going to be another one of our young stars.

| Best Ipswich-Scottish 11's? on 15:01 - Jun 25 with 1230 views | PhilTWTD | Tommy Miller qualified but was never called up. Danny Hegan was born in Scotland but played for Northern Ireland. Gerry Baker qualified for Scotland - both his parents were Scottish and he grew up there - but played for the US where he was born. Loanees Gerry Creaney and Mark Burchill wouldn't make the team.

I think that coincided with our overall slump and post Robson-hangover more than anything else. We appointed two managers after that were very much not up to the task of the rebuild and the result was what it was.

Well I figure there was a reason he never made it after those games, but he did well, that was what baffled me at the time. Another fun one is Kevin Ellis playing for us in the Premier League, and if he you ever speak to him about it he basically says he played because he was the only fit player in that position available at the time and had no right being there! He was on our books 7/8 years though! From the same generation, Lee Durant, thought he would be a decent player for us (like Tanner was), did okay and basically never played again.

I always forget Matt Elliott was Scottish! If only we could have had him the season after, we'd have been promoted!

Mattie is streets ahead of hirst, in every aspect of his play , especially finishing

I was talking to him about that when he was here with Radio Leicester last season. If I remember rightly, I think he had surgery in the summer and never really recovered. Played a handful of games for Leicester later in the season and that was that for him. I think he said he would have fancied staying longer, particularly if Town had gone up and Leicester under Micky Adams, who he evidently didn't like, got relegated.

Bit of nostalgia glasses there - Hirst led the line for two teams promoted to the top division, Mathie 0.

Finishing certainly, but Hirst has more to his all-round game.

Mathie, for his time, was a good forward. You could put him up top with a target man like Marshall, or a more technical forward like a Johnson and still have some pretty good link ups. Had we been promoted while he was here and still young enough to make a difference, he would have been alright for us in the top flight. It was a different game then. Had we hung onto Marshall in 1996 we'd have probably been promoted that season with he, Mathie and Mason all scoring for fun.

His favourite crap Scot was called "Hoss" something or other (Colraine maybe) because presuambly he was like a carthorse. Also, didn't David Johnson qualify due to his passport?

I remember watching him at Oxford and not thinking he was anything special but he went on to have a really good career. Also remember him playing for us at MK Dons and the Hockey stadium ( what a weird experience that was) it wasn’t that loud there and you could hear him talking the whole back 4 through the game.
