| Clarke from Scotland leaves 00:44 - Jun 28 with 3010 views | quirkie | He was given a 4 year deal before the WC but the total embarrassment of Scotland failing for the 15th time to qualify for the KO stage has seen him depart. Would McKenna fancy a spell as an international manager? Might be less intense than managing in club football. Just thinking aloud if Scotland did go for him would they have to pay compensation to ITFC? [Post edited 28 Jun 1:40]

Not sure that's an appointment that would do his street cred much good though, unless a very quick miracle happens and Scotland suddenly start producing world class players, which seems rather unlikely.

| Clarke from Scotland leaves on 01:29 - Jun 28 with 2349 views | tetchris | Clarke has led them to two European championships and a World Cup. It’s not the biggest nation and he has a small pool of players to choose from. They’ll be disappointed with their performances having got to the World Cup, but I think if you’re Scottish you have to be realistic. | | | |

Steve Clarke is an average manager, and he definitely played negative tactics this WC. However, Scotland were in a group with 2 teams ranked 6th and 7th in the world. They beat the team they needed to beat. Even if they won 3-0 against Haiti, they still wouldn't be going through.

| Clarke from Scotland leaves on 06:20 - Jun 28 with 2078 views | BloomBlue | Scotland don't have the players. They have a dogshlt league, that is non league standard at best. Yes they will produce the occasional gem, but having basically a 2 team league for the last 40 years has killed them. Plus the so called 'small' nations have seen a production line of players seeing football as a way to improve their lives. Even this season a Hearts league could have changed some of the dynamics, but instead of bemoaning them not winning it, most celebrated the return to the old firm winning again Until Scotland move away from the 70s mindset and understand they aren't the Scotland of that era the better - but they won't - and it doesn't matter who the manager is. | | | |

What’s realistic is that Croatia have a population more than 20% smaller than Scotland yet achieve far more virtually every tournament. Those who run Scotland’s football need to ask why. Let’s face it, they’ve one or two decent players, but the rest are way off. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I don't think Rangers supporters celebrated the return of the Old Firm winning again this year...but they did get their own victory over Hearts by nicking their manager. From my own experience the few Scots supporters I have spoken to felt that Hearts had been cheated in that final game and there was certainly some media speculation about the character, or lack of, shown by the referee. As well as general disdain for the behaviour of some of the Celtic support afterwards. The season just gone was quite refreshing though, as well as the Hearts resurgence there was the surprising fourth place for Motherwell (driven to some extent by New Zealand's World Cup star Eli Just) but both those teams have lost a gifted manager so will have a job to sustain their showing this time. But that's not to say that another couple of clubs will get smart and launch a challenge, it's intersting times in Scottish football for those bothered to pay attention. However, the national team's vacant managerial position doesn't seem to have an obvious candidate. Perhaps it is time for someone who isn't Scottish.

I really believe Derek McInnes be found out at Rangers. A talented manager would've won the SPL in the position Hearts were in. The truth is all Tony Bloom clubs have a blueprint that works regardless of the manager. It's quite common that one of his managers does well, ends up leaving to a bigger job and they don't last a year in those new jobs. In Belgium for Union SG, Felice Mazzu left to go to Anderlecht (sacked after 4 months), Karel Geraerts left to go to Schalke (sacked after 11 months) and Sébastien Pocognoli (who was amazingly in the bookies shortlist for the Ipswich job) left Union SG mid season to go manage Monaco and was sacked at the end of the same season (only 7 months in charge). Bit of an unfair comparison as the weather probably plays a factor. Being outside as a kid in Scotland is miserable with all the rain. In Croatia they take sports seriously at school level and they're outdoors playing sport a lot. Also, it's a bit of a problematic comparison because their sporting prowess is kind of driven by a post-war nationalist ideology, which isn't particularly healthy.
