flip side is that as he is paying a lot of tax into the system and someone has to subsidize fancy car showrooms. Easily In the top 1% of taxpayers contributing a quarter of the income tax take. Captains of industry, fine, but that a veteran goalkeeper should be in that top 1% is daft

Now, profile me an England international goal keeper of the same requisite premier league experience, who still has the ability to be a number one and costs less than £15 million…

Or you broaden your horizons and find yourself a Robin Roefs like Sunderland did last summer for the same, if not cheaper price.

You’re moving the goal-posts, clearly it’s also important to have players who know and understand the league and the rigours of premier league football- Pope is a veteran and it’s a bonus that he has a connection with the club too. I’ll broaden it out for you, forget England international- Find me an internationally experienced goalkeeper who can still be a number one, with the kind of premier league experience that Pope has for under £15 million.

Its gonna be a very well experieced one. When weve spent £7 mill on akpom. It shows imo 15 mill isnt much of a fee as it sounds. Considering we also got 10 for broadhead. |
Itll be interesting to compare our level of spending and the quality if player we get in through the door, to our promotion rivals,as a bench mark of our recruitment strategy in the PL.

Find me a 34 year old keeper who performed like Nick Pope did last season who a club would be willing to pay 15 million for is maybe the flip side of that.

Difficult for me to judge, as I didn’t see him play last season - I have seen him play on a number of occasions though and he’s a very dependable Premier League goalkeeper who will make a grand number one at most clubs from mid-table down.

Before last season I would have been in 100% agreement with you. He got a bad injury, came back last season and looked very dodgy and had another injury that has to be a concern no ?

Wonder if we end up with a base fee of £5m-7m with some hefty top ups based on appearances/us staying up.

Allegedly he’s on £60k a week at Newcastle. I think there are better value goalkeepers in Europe for less. Bit unfair on Walton if he isn’t no 1 next season!

Pope is 34 & seems quite injury prone. We'd be mad to spend £15m on him & give him a huge contract.

Yes we need to keep up this coming season as every time you yo-yo it becomes that bit more difficult to achieve promotion again. One or two of your best players leave and need replacing and despite the parachute money clubs know you have a large wad and want a big slice of that for players that maybe aren't worth what they want. As with any player a manager will never know how good they will be based on previous performances and we saw with two previous golden boot winners last season who didn't score a handful of goals between them.
