34, injury prone and has been that good that Newcastle have spent the last 2 seasons trying to replace him. £5m and as a backup I could just about stomach, but £15m and 100k a week to be our first choice. Jesus wept.

Lets be honest tho we arent going to be signing any clubs number 1 keeper of prem level. Its gonna be a very well experieced one. When weve spent £7 mill on akpom. It shows imo 15 mill isnt much of a fee as it sounds. Considering we also got 10 for broadhead.

But I think we all need to basically forget about the monies involved in our deals now, all the sensible normal thoughts we have had over the years about what people are worth what the fee should be the wages they get, all that is irrelevant nowadays. It’s a whole different world, and our owners seem sensible (by and large) and very well off. We should feel free to judge the players we bring in based on ability are they what we need etc but I think we should forget about the money side.

We need to invest in younger players who can be sold on later, not spend on older players who can quickly become liabilities. Fans paying more for tickets and shirts while any player is paid £100k a week does not sit comfortably with me. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Given he is reportedly on around 60k a week at Newcastle this sounds like nonsense. Somewhere between 5-8m and 40k a week sounds about right.

Totally agree, i dont know if the numbers are right but as im not paying all i care is if he does a job for us, the owners are the ones who are paying the money if he does as job ill be happy and so will the owners, think we worry far too much about how much someone costs if it was our money i think there would be a point but its not, lets focus on who can do a job not what they cost, like when sunderland bought GX for 17m didnt hear any complaints but he did a job now its a master stroke maybe we should see if he helps keep us in the league would be 15m well spent, again if that number is true.

Or spent 2 years find out how difficult he is to replace. Ended up as no 1 last season, might be harder than it seems to get that kind of quality

How do you think the club raises the funds for wages etc other than tv money?
| We’re prepared to pay £15m and £100k a week … on 10:01 - Jul 5 with 3482 views | itfcjoe | I don't think the wages are particularly out the way, and probably what he is on at Newcastle in reality (despite reports cited here), but the fee seems mental - should be a third of that | |

i believe alan nixon has put the same on his substack, again like i said im not fussed at cost im not paying and we know good footballers cost, but if they come and do a job im more than happy.

There is far better value out there IMHO across European markets. For what it's worth, Radek Vitek who was on loan at Bristol City would be a good purchase if you wanted something of a known quantity with plenty more potential. The need for a second, young keeper as understudy doesn't feel right. If Walton isn't judged good enough to start bt the club, he is 100% good enough back up with either Palmer, Slicker or one of the younger crew as not for me.

15M is totally absurd. He's 34. Chelsea just bid £8M for Granit Xhaka, a player who is not only younger but plays in a more influential position.

Is arguably a much better all round target as well. I really struggle with this type of stuff. Pope for stupid money is exactly what we should not be doing.

Looks world class, is 23, would have a huge resale value and has a season in Serie A, and unlike Muric, he uses his physicality and enjoys taking crosses. He’s the best keeper I’ve seen at the World Cup, small sample, but looks a bargain and can only improve. Leeds like Forest, Sunderland etc seem to ‘get it’ with recruitment, we needed someone like Dougie Freedman to sort out our talent ID, Mark clearly enjoys it, it’s just that his 6/7 out of 10 skill set isn’t nearly good enough, the worst teams at this level are doing it two levels above Mark. Marks exit liquidity now for clubs. Pope would have been great two years ago, those injuries look to have seriously reduced his ability…, maybe it’s confidence, but he looks half the player he was. I’m sorry. I just don’t think Mark knows how to build a squad at this level..and he’s had the time and resources, twice come August. Spurs didn’t know what league they were in until the last kick of the season, they’ve signed five players. Sunderland were promoted through the play offs, and had half a dozen lined up at this stage. We were favourites for promotion, we had the resources in place, Marks had five years to build a process and a full two season to learn and develop the networks at this level, it’s a lot more than the other clubs that sailed past us have had. Leeds etc they lean on their owners networks. We don’t have that. We have Mark. He’s ensured he’s the only football voice in the room.., and there no vision, no strategy, no planning, poor process and poor execution. He just isn’t at this level. Doesn’t make him bad either. You can be very good and mikes off this level. But an ounce of self awareness and he’d have brought the right bums in to mitigate. That’s where he’s failed. And he has failed. Copy Sunderland and look to France. Probably a good idea, it’s just not a strategy is it. No vision, no skill. That’s three strategic pivots all based on the what’s just happened…, that’s not elite. It’s panic.

weve literally bid for a striker from france and looking at a lot of french based players, but when we do they are awful and we can do better, sounds like the club is in a lose lose
