Do we honestly think we're a bigger pull than Brentford? 09:54 - Jul 10 with 1861 viewsITFC_Essex

… Brighton, Bournemouth, Fulham and Crystal Palace. I am always amazed when our fanbase seems surprised that a player would choose to go to Brentford (or the like) over us. People genuinely surprised that Wilson would choose to probably earn more, to play less and not be involved with another relegation scrap at his stage of his career at a now very established Premier League club like Brentford, over Ipswich. People were also surprised that McKenna would be interested in the Fulham job, over staying here, as if that would have been a backwards move?

Are we a bit stuck in the past as a support?

I get that historically we were the bigger club, but most footballers were born this century now and wouldn’t have much of a clue about our achievements of the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s let alone our few moments of good in the 90’s and early 00’s. While we should of course take pride in our achievements, we must remember our place in the context of the here and now. Our two greatest ever managers were born 90-100+ years ago now, and in terms of winning a big trophy, or last was close to half a century ago! Kids born in the year 2000 have seen Stoke and Swansea play more top-flight football than we have.

The only way we can change that is by spending a prolonged period in the top league, and there’s no reason why we couldn’t. If we get it right, we could emulate any of those clubs and I believe we can, but we also need to be realistic about where we are right now and not belittle the likes of Brentford.

Stay up for 1 year and all of a sudden you're part of a cluster of 10 clubs capable of making a run for Conference League qualification.

We're not stuck in the past whatsoever. It's just that someone like Wilson feels the Bees are a safer bet (on-field) than us.

I don't know, some of our support is scoffing at the idea that anyone would choose Brentford over us!

I don't think so. From a football project perspective, most people can see why players opt for them over us. But we all know we have a higher ceiling than them long term (if we get things right this season).

Just look at the annual wage spend from the last time we were in the Premier League and it shows how far off of those sides we are.

Where have you seen this expressed? On what scale? Is it real?

I don't know anyone who thinks we're a bigger pull than any of those established PL clubs at the moment.

Mind you, I rarely look at Twitter or any of the other more troll-infested places.

It's on socials, mostly, but a few on the news comments here too.

But it was in line with people who thought McKenna would never choose to go to Palace or Fulham because we are a bigger club. It's just unrealistic.

Manchester City were once turd, now they have the pick of the best players in the country vs their rivals Manure and Liverpool who were historically bigger clubs. Even Leeds.

It may not be the reason for turning us down if that were indeed the case. If we don't get five of the six keepers we are supposed to be chasing does that mean they have turned us down.
We along with several clubs will always struggle to get players in and then if they improve enough to attract larger clubs to hold on to them.
That in itself creates problems as the best can replace players with the best whereas we have to continually evolve and replace not only those that become surplus but also those that we have to sell.
It could be argued we don't need to sell but as with players like Omari they just down tools and an important member of a squad is redundant and cannot be replaced until sold.
As for the size of our club it compares favourably with many and in some cases is better. It's just that the yo-yo scenario exists until we banish it.

I like this post.

I have not read particularly that we have belittled the likes of Brentford but certainly on other media platforms "some" of our fanbase are extremely vocal and it is important to show humility and accept that history is one thing , results and where we are now is what matters most , to potential players as well as other fanbases.

I read only this week that Philogene can "B*gger off" , "don't care if he leaves we will get better" etc , that sort of response may be defensive but it is naïve to think we can simply go out and attract the type of player of his class easily

Its not about the money - we can probably complete with 90% of European clubs on purchasing power , but it is more about what it will do for the players career path - which is why we are most likely to attract young ambitious players from here and overseas that want to play in the premier league and make a name for themselves. Philogene being one of them. More established players might want to believe in the project but will also be aligned wit the current reality.

Is it not just natural that football fans have an over inflated opinion of thier own club?

Whether we are right or wrong is irrelevant sometimes. It is the excitement, joy and passion of supporting a team.

Even in the Evan’s days I could be disillusioned all week, but as soon as Saturday came I’d expect a win.

Which is why we have to be careful on these forums. We are either in very excited or overly pessimistic. 9 times out of 10 I am the level headed fan, but I have moments of stupidity.

All of this is why we don’t want fans running the club. Game changer etc have done brilliantly. Even Ashton, despite his misdemeanours deserve credit.

So of course we think we are better than Fulham! Look up the road , the budgies think they are better than us!

No, but there is only 1 of us and 5 of them.

This is all very subjective and it would be player dependent. Not all players would favour those clubs over us just as not all players would favour us. Many things would come into it, wages, location, game time, management the list goes on. More players than not would at this moment probably favour those clubs but far from all of players where us and them are interested in would do so.

It's simpler than that.

Football is an occupation, and footballers/managers are professionals within the game; therefore the question for them is no different to any of us when we look for a new job - what is best for me at this time in my career?

Rarely outside of the truly big clubs does club reputation and history factor in.

They will consider things including but not limited to: Manager, Wages, Playing time, Location, Club stability, Team mates, playing style - while relegation may be one of the considerations, I would suggest that is more down to salary impact in the contract than anything else - generally footballers just want to play football in an environment which they will personally thrive.

WIlson was almost certainly more about wages, staying in London, European football etc., it's convenient in this stage of his career.

Other players may see coming to Ipswich as a huge opportunity - they could be a key player who helps establish the club and therefore enhance their reputation.

Staying up will improve factors over time, such as stability, wages, squad depth and being in the Prem means we look at a different pool of players vs when we are in the Champ.

There are always people that see things differently, but most people are realistic.

Of course Palace, Fulham and Brentford are ‘bigger’ clubs. Much bigger in terms of infrastructure, money, club worth, Premier experience. History? Counts for nothing. Support? With Premier dough they could play in front of empty grounds and still be far ‘bigger’ than ITFC.

Potential? That’s a different story. But people like Wilson are interested in the now. They will be interested in family disturbance, contract length, not getting relegated to keep the dough rolling in - things like that.

McKenna? Bournemouth, Fulham, Brentford etc were all a big step up for him. I suspect a club of their stature will take him on at some point.

But none of these clubs matter. It’s all about what owners and management do to grow the club. Progress to date has been phenomenal and should not be ignored, but we are here now and need to push on because I believe the potential is there.

Americans tend to be ruthless when it comes to business and if the owners are truly interested (evidence suggests they are) I don’t think anybody or anything will stand in their way. It’s very interesting and exciting.

A first step, however unlikely, is to stay in the Premier League.

Completely agree. We need to find a way to stay in the league. To do that we must hit the ground running. We can’t afford a slow start like last season, where even KM was frustrated that we left our recruitment far too late. Just six weeks until the eve of the kick off. Getting players in to start gelling with the squad is clearly going to be critical.

Nope, we’ll be one of the nailed on relegation favourites. The clubs you mentioned have all done enough over a long period of time to suggest they will do ok again (but when things start to go wrong they can slip quickly, so who knows whether one or more of them will get into trouble soon). I wouldn’t expect anyone to pick us over them unless they want guaranteed game time (in which case are they really good enough anyway if they can’t get game time at an established PL club?), more money or a particular fondness for the area for whatever reason.

It's a bit like us in the 70's 'looking down' on the Preston's and Blackpool's and the Huddersfield's of the time. They'd all enjoyed success 30-40 yrs before but they were bygones to those of us that grew up in Towns glory years.

Yep, it's always crazy to me we spent an entire total of 3 seasons in the top flight prior to our 18 consecutive years (1968-1986)

suspect one of the reasons Wilson signed for Brentford its nearer his home ,hop on the tube and a few stops and he is there ,location must be a big factor for players with families to consider

There is a contradictory mentality on here, and I guess we can all be guilty of it in when making points,

At times we like to revel in our glory years over the late 1970s to early 1980s, suggesting we are a bigger club than Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth. Then on the other hand our recent seasons in League One and playing against Morecambe is regularly mentioned.

Perhaps we need to decide which of the two that we try to measure where the club is at the present time? For me you have to aim at the successful era, saying it is only 5 years since we were a League One side is making an excuse for failings,
