"We have to be successful this year" 11:51 - Jul 10 with 2882 viewsZx1988

I hope that's just rhetoric, and not an indication of management's expectations of O'Neil.

I just don't want to see us becoming one of those sacking clubs where things generally go the right way, we only just fail to stay up, and O'Neil is sacked the day after the final game purely because we got relegated.

I think he was a bit disrespectful to Kieran there.

I thought there were undertones of that in his original presser too.

Regardless, factually he isn't wrong and I strongly believe with have better chance of staying up with him than with KM.

I'd be disappointed if it was as black and white as that. The context of relegation should play a massive part, especially given how challenging it is to stay in the PL. It's not like getting relegated straight out of the Championship at the first attempt.

If we're there or thereabouts all season, and lose out by a point or GD on the final day, I can't see the point in sacking the manager and having to start all over again.

If we're relegated by March, then fine.

Taken in isolation, yes.

But just above in the article he talks of the incredible work McKenna did here. He also mentions chatting with him and a level of respect.

He’s not wrong that we were nowhere near. He’s just letting us know that he’s going to try and change that and aims to keep us up.

Maybe.

But would there not be a difference between putting in a good effort, and finishing 18th by a single frustrating point, compared to just propping up the whole table in 20th the whole season as the league whipping boys? The latter I think yes, sacked. The first outcome, it's more open to discussion.

At some point our expectations need to shift. We're not a plucky back-to-back from L1 Ipswich anymore. We're a parachute club, bouncing straight back with a very expensively assembled squad by Champ standards. 6 players who cost us more than £15m now, McAteer not far off. A number of others £5m - £10m. Whether they're all worth what we paid is another question, but that's true of all clubs, and some are certainly worth more than we paid (e.g. Davis).

I'd take sites like Transfermarkt with a pinch of salt, but it has our squad value at 208m EUR. Higher than Hull and Cov, some 150m off the the likes of Sunderland, Leeds, Fulham etc. No doubt we'll spend that sort of sum this window. It doesn't guarantee success, and they wont all work out, but there's a clear correlation between £ and league position.

Investment in the stadium, new training ground, on paper we've probably got a right to expect 18th as 'par' this season, and a hope to do 1 better. We're not an outlier at the bottom who got promoted ahead of schedule. We're not here to make up the numbers and the mentality needs to match that.

Isn't this a quote from Gary O'Neil? So, unless he's sacking himself then I take this as the obvious target for the season.

100% agree.

Unfortunately I think the days of our greatest strength being our consistency (when Ashton talked about McKenna) are over.

Sadly I wouldn't be surprised if we become just another sacking club.

As much as I love and always will love KM, GON is being factually correct. As a club, we got nowhere near survival and we have to do better this time.

That's 100% factual, we were nowhere near staying up - it's not disrespectful.

He calls out the excellent work the KM has done at the club to get to where it is at earlier in the interview.

It's GON setting the bar for himself and the team, how the board reacts will depend on more than just whether we finish 17th vs 18th . . .

No-one deserves the sack purely because they get relegated, there are many factors which can lead to relegation, as there are many which can lead to dismissal.

The binary view you have is what is wrong with how football clubs are run these days.

Absolutely! There's no way he's being disrespectful to Kieran, it's just fact and KM would have admitted the same had he stayed here. Everyone knows we were poor last time - that's not criticism just reality and is the result of the meteoric rise we'd had. This time it really should be different - and I think GON's 'We have to be successful ...' is just recognising that we cannot go up with the 'Little Ipswich' mentality, but that we belong there now, as have to show that with results.

Agree. Both things can be true, he's absolutely right to talk our chances up and not down. If nothing else it's an important reminder to the squad that things are different now, expectations are different. Bloodying a few noses on our way to a limp relegation wont cut it. By all means recognise the magnitude of the challenge, but there's no room for negativity and defeatist attitudes. Ambition drives standards.

That doesn't mean he's immediately for the chop if we don't succeed though, it'll depend on how it all plays out.

Agree bsw. There are a lot of factors to consider when making a change and it’s not as simple as ‘there’s the benchmark. Failure to achieve it and your out on your @rse’

While I completely agree with you, the situation is different to two seasons ago. From an infrastructure and experience perspective we should be and are better placed. The squad base is stronger (but not strong enough yet). There are no shocks, no new experience as it was when we played Liverpool in 2024 after 22 years.

The expectation of the owners will be much greater and with it the pressure for the club to do better. It’s how it should be and how it is. Two seasons ago in reality it was a free hit. It isn’t now.

Disrespectful? Not at all. Factual.

I am sure Kieran would say the same thing himself. We had a league 1 squad largely trying to play in the premier league.

This time, we have a decent championship team with Emerson added and few more to come. Of course we expect more. Whether that’s enough to stay up I don’t know. Like the OP I am hoping it isn’t the sack if we fail. He gets the sack if he hasn’t learnt from wolves and the senior players don’t respect him, if effort isn’t 100%, style of playing isn’t as expected…….etc.

If we miss on the last day and we go down fighting then he deserves to stay.

Crazy for us to even consider such things now though.

I think we need to accept that the expectation is very different to two years ago. Last time out many gave KM a free hit with credit in the bank. Rightly so.

This time it’s very very different. We gained promotion after being one of the firm favourites to do so. We must do better than last time (where we were very poor especially after Christmas). That includes recruitment, which we can ill afford to leave to late.

For me, GON has been selected as the best candidate to keep us up. That’s his one and only goal I hope he does and he has full support. But if for whatever reason he doesn’t, he will have failed. It’s as simple as that.

I like what you say about the expectations being different now. As much as we loved KM and didn't want him to go sometimes a change is necessary to really emphasise the different expectations. It crossed my mind when KM went, and listening to GON talking one senses the change in rhetoric - I think kit;s a good thing.
