I've just sent in my notice to retire from work 11:07 - Jul 13 with 7813 viewsnoggin

Probably the most difficult decision I've ever made. The constant doubt about whether I can afford it is causing me all sorts of anxiety.
Anyone else had these doubts and can give me some positive thoughts? I haven't paid off my mortgage so will have to work something out there, but, eventually, I plan to travel for a few months, or possibly years, before moving somewhere cheaper than Norway.
My head is all over the place right now.

Whilst I didn't retire entirely until I was 70, some 6 years ago I was lucky enough to accept redundancy at 52. I had around a year and a half off only doing occasional work and then managed to get another full time job in 2005. By 2010 I went part time doing three days a week. Then a work colleague had an operation that went wrong and I had a few months working full time again. I then went back to a four day week in 2010 and finished in September 2015. In December I got a job doing two days a week, added a second job to that at the same company. One of these jobs I lost during the pandemic, but kept the second which was one day a week. I then finished completely in 2020.
Having suffered prostate cancer in 2019 which came to a head where I had radiotherapy in 2023 I sometimes wish I was still capable of working as you do miss your mates. Although having said that many have now also retired or passed away. Best to make the most of your retirement and do whatever your funds allow.

This confused me for a while.

I can't speak from experience, but I dare say you'll do well to find many people who utter the words 'I wish I'd retired later' on their death beds. Of course the practical realities are real, and I don't mean to trivialise your reservations.

Ps. I hear Burnley's cheap.

My dad took very early retirement from regional management for a large communications company and then got a job as one of the Physics Lab technicians at a local school, specialising in the Electronics stuff.

Next to no travelling, zero stress, long holidays, and the pay from that, plus his early work pension, left him, if anything, ever so slightly up on the deal. And he got to play with electronics again, as he had done at the beginning of his career when he was an electronic engineer, rather than what he became, the manager of electronic engineers.

That may not work for you, but there may be something analogous for you that might!

Been seriously considering it for a while myself now Noggin, I can't tell you how many times I've tapped that calculator for my minimum outgoings, which is about £1k a month, I need to survive until my private pension kicks in, about seven years, then obviously the state pension two years after that, then things would be better..

But I was eating lunch today and it occured to me that I'd had about 12 conversations with different people this morning alone, this isn't out of the norm, it's just on my mind how much I might miss this, I've known people for years in that place and I know if I left I'd miss this, but the lure of being absolutely free and having nobody shoving jobs under my nose shifts the balance, in your line of work, would you not miss the people and the value that your job gives you? A purpose...

"in your line of work, would you not miss the people and the value that your job gives you? A purpose..."

The majority of my colleagues now are in their 20s, which I think is part of the reason I'm leaving. Most of them are lovely people but I feel kind of out of place and their enthusiasm exhausts me

Remind them they'll be working until they're 70, that should dent their enthusiasm! :)

I can't open the link, but I think it might be the couple in Kent, who have bought an old boat that they considered considered living on and are currently in their caravan, while selling the house?

Their plan actually worries me, on their behalf. They seem to have quite a bit of bad luck and a very limited budget. I hope it works out for them though.

Sell up now. Travel until you’re done. No mortgage to worry about finishing and you never know when you won’t be able too as you can now. Then, once you’re satisfied, buy somewhere you can afford with what you’ve got left.

Enjoy!!

I've been looking at this a lot lately as I may be forced into at least semi retirement by circumstances surrounding my business premises. It's kind of exciting in one way but don't think I'm financially ready. Recently I visited Thailand and met a number of people who have retired there. It's so affordable.

I find a lot of the videos put out by Vagabond Awake quite inspiring. Stacks of interviews with ex pats in numerous countries on his channel. Good luck Nogs

After seeing my mum pass at just 70 this year, six weeks after diagnosis my whole attitude to retirement has changed.

I think you are making the right choice and you will have no regrets.

I’ve started calculating my exit strategy and hope to be in a similar position at either 57 when I can pull 25% of my pension or a few years close to that.

That's very sad to hear about your Mum, condolences.

Generally when I have taken up the pensions pots I have accumulated I have gone for 75% purchase of annuity and 25% tax free lump sum, but with the view that it's nice to have money in the bank and I can use that lump sum mainly to invest (safe stuff like ISAs) so that I still have a de facto pension pot accumulating as a safeguard against living longer than I expect to (and as something to gradually gift to the offspring in the unlikely event of liability to inheritance tax.)

Thanks. If you wish to remain in Europe closer to Norway he, and other YouTubers, rave on about how good Albania is. Affordable and easy to stay apparently. He has a number of videos on Albania.

That's an interesting video, here's another seasoned traveller but a totally different vibe. I don't find this fella as personable as Steve Marsh but his reports are always eventful:

Albania is lovely and affordable. The only problem is, the annual increases to the UK state pension are not awarded to British pensioners in Albania.
Bulgaria is an option, although I believe prices have increased significantly since they adopted the Euro.
