However. However. Football throws up wonderful surprises. Never expected France to be this poor this evening. And Cape Verde of all teams have shown that Spain aren't invincible. Gotta love football.

It’s perception on your part. At the last three WC tournaments, fouls per game went from 29.3 in 2018 to 27.7 in 2022, and this year’s tournament is running at 24.4 through the first couple of weeks, don’t have full touring stats yet. Been attributed to the scrutiny VAR puts players under, along with referees generally letting the game flow rather than whistling for marginal contact that would previously have been called. This WC has seen far fewer of the fouls you are claiming. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

France have the flair players and individually offer a serious greatest goal threat, but nobody else controls a game like Spain. Whoever else who gets to the final is going to have to play out of their skins. ITV don’t get it, just saying France are having an off day.

Spain are serious ‘dark arts’ artists, that’s for sure. Or cheats as it’s otherwise known. It’s part of how they control the game. Often when they’re in trouble someone goes down faking a head injury or bad contact and then replays show no contact.

I think they have been underestimated, but France have been terrible, it doesn't help that 2 or 3 of their forwards don't press at all, and that massively plays into the way Spain want to play. I am not for a second taking for granted our semi final tomorrow, but I do think if we get to the final England are a better matchup for Spain than France are. We press/defend with our forwards far better than France. Also Yamal has had a lot of success against Digne who is a weak link in the French defence, I don't know if he would do as well against O'Reilly who I think has had a really good tournament. Also if fit our central midfield of Rice and Anderson should do a better job of limiting the space Olmo had in that pocket where he did so much good work from today. [Post edited 14 Jul 22:03]

That’s because the refs haven’t given half of them and they’ve been obvious to most of us 😂😂

This was only near the end. The vast majority of the game Spain were excellent at keeping the ball.

Agreed in short Spain did a number on France. Made France look clueless apart from some individual flair. But lets be fair Spain beat France all ends up and could have scored more. I'd be very cautious about calling France poor (which they were) but Spain completely overran them and were in control of the game.

That to me is a bizarre reading of the match. The goalie at the end was being ridiculous but go ahead and convince me Pickford wouldn’t do all that.

Spain turned up, France didn't. Only one winner of a contest like that. I will hold my hand up here and say I'm a great fan of the way they play. Simple football ( pass and move ) done at the highest level, with some flair added in for good measure. My kind of football. If it isn't us holding the trophy aloft at the weekend, I truly hope it's them. It'll be one or the other if we get there!

Spain are so so, Baena, Olmo and Oyarzabal are all fairly middling forwards, Lamine Yamal still doesn't look 100% to me. France got schooled tactically but that's equal parts that Deschamps is a fraud, the game state suiting them after the extremely fortunate penalty, France's main flaw (poor centre midfield) being a good matchup for Spain's main strength (Rodri and Ruiz). It's not a vintage Spain side at all and one performance doesn't change that for me.

Maybe the Euros in 2 years we have a good a start, next wc though I'd agree. Harry Kane has definitely got 2 more years as a top striker, not sure he has 4. That said Engalnd have suprised me this time around, based on the build up i wasnt at all confident

Not really played a team I wouldn't expect them to beat yet, so to be determined if Tuchel's really elevated them above Southgate-era levels.
