Drip feeding/dollar cost averaging is also an excellent way to iron out bumps in the road. People really over complicate investing but it’s really not hard - but does require patience of which not a lot of people have these days… |
The first people who had my money were interactive investor, who had a fairly basic portfolio they recommended. My first foray into the stock market was with that. I’d investigate and see if they still do the same thing. It was quite a while since I looked at them.

They do. Fixed fees makes them a good bet if you have a fair chunk invested. Vanguard were always low fees for their funds but now charge a platform fee. Guess 2 mins on chatgpt asking the cheapest fees for a 10k tracker fund would be 2 mins well spent.

| Best way to invest 10 grand... on 16:37 - Jul 19 by DarkBrandon | Are medium/low risk funds all equities, or do they mix in bonds too? I made the decision a while back to invest aggressively in high risk funds and I’d encourage most people to do that same. As long as you don’t need the money for a few years. One thing you might want to do is drip-feed the money into the market. Maybe 2.5k in per month for the next month. That just gives you a little hedging against a short term correction. |
I said mixed asset, what I was thinking was something where 90ish % is equities, with a spattering of other things like bonds.

| Best way to invest 10 grand... on 15:52 - Jul 19 by Guthrum | Plus, of course, with PBs your capital is entirely safe (assuming the country doesn't collapse), can never be reduced. Which is a significant bonus compared with other forms of investment/gambling. I'm a big fan. Haven't won big, but do get prizes very regularly. |
Utterly crap return though. They’re not even as good as high yielding savings accounts for most. But you get easy access to cash and tax free, so if you want hold cash they’re not terrible. My investments have outperformed my PBs every year for years and by some distance (2-4x).

| Best way to invest 10 grand... on 13:12 - Jul 19 by Swansea_Blue | That’s what I’d do. I’m getting 8%+ in a medium risk one. Value can go down was well as up of course, but over time any slumps have always been ridden out if you are genuinely investing for the longer term and can afford to wait out any drops, rather than saving for an upcoming purchase. Not that I know much about it. |

Yep - my lad and I have 8 or 9 sadly only 3 Pokemon centre ETB’s. The ETB’s or booster boxes are the best to hold long term. My preferred choice is PC ETB’s if you get them on the drop they instantly 3x and grow from tbere

“My investments have outperformed my PBs every year for years and by some distance (2-4x)” One is risk free though the other isn’t - so you’d hope the place you’re taking risk would generate higher returns! Otherwise we really are fckd! You are right though, PBs are a great place to put your instant access cash but not suitable for building long term wealth. [Post edited 20 Jul 7:33]

Thankfully efforts are being made to stop people profiteering in such a cynical way from what is essentially a children's trading card game. People 'investing' now are in for a world of disappointment.

| Best way to invest 10 grand... on 15:22 - Jul 21 with 549 views | Ryorry | Might as well ask on this thread - about 12 years ago I bought some Thompson Reuters shares on the advice of a former (retired) bank manager who handled everything, but died about 5 years later. I've many times since wanted to sell them, but no idea how to go about it. I gather this isn't a good time to sell, but can anyone suggest the best way of divesting please? The company is based in Canada, so I can't just phone them up. | |

Thomson Reuters are a well known company internationally so a broker such as Hargreaves Lansdown can give you an online quote, you may find A J Bell the cheapest option for one off deal that utilises the paper share certificates though but not sure if their £3.50 charge only applies to United Kingdom shares.

Trading 212 is fine for beginners or those wanting to play with smaller pots of money. They don't charge transaction fees, which means they profit through larger spreads (buy vs sell price) and FX fees when applicable. For serious investing I would recommend a more established broker. Interactive Investor, Hargreaves Lansdown (my choice), AJ Bell.
