I think I might have just found the best (or worst) ever cr@p claim to fame...

The actor who played Sinbad in Brookside follows me on twitter.

First idiot to jump off the newly built St. Neots bypass Bridge into The Great Ouse aged about 13, was a laugh at the time but would now go spare if one of my kids did the same.

Picked up a fair few celebrities, MP's and people of note during my days as a taxi driver, Paddy Ashdown seemed like a lovely bloke and Sir Robert Edwards one of the chief pioneers of IVF treatment) was one of the nicest people I've ever met, although he was glad his work was done before the days of the Internet as he got enough grief from people who disapproved who'd taken the time to post a letter.

You reminded me - had similar from Janet Street Porter, next to me in village post office in North Yorkshire - told her I really enjoyed her radio programmes - she gave me the evils by way of reply!

Someone later said she hated being recognised. I thought it rather goes with the territory.

I suppose it is an interruption to their private lives. But at the time I was crestfallen by the Biggin’s reply - and with the benefit of time I can see the funny side of the situation.

He was only driving a Ford Scorpio at the time so he couldn’t be that famous!

I bump into Danny Dyer once in a while when working in the Epping Forest area. He calls me 'Braintree'.

In 1978, we booked Paper Lace for our university hall of residence Christmas ball.

We had Desmond Dekker at Cheltenham Race Course in 1992. Had I realised at the time, he was prophesying my future experiences on TWTD…

Can understand that in anonymous cities, where I wouldn’t speak to anyone, but out here in small rural communities, it’s considered normal and friendly for people to chat with each other even if they haven’t met before.

I've got a few claims to fame.

Got drunk with the brand new heavies guitarist and bass player at the Ipswich Regent.
Also played bass for Rolf Harris at a fun run in Hyde park once (would like to add that i was part of westbourne jazz band and not Rolfs)
Arranged insurance for multiple footballers over the years, The nicest was Bam Bam's, the worst was ##redacted#, when he got caught without a licence.
The weirdest was Posh Spice, just before she started dating Beckham

This is very weird. I (and a few of my friends) got invited to 'check out the tour bus' by the Brand New Heavies drummer at the Ipswich Regent (a bit icky because we were only 17 years old but luckily nothing untoward happened). Mica Paris was also there.

My brother was in Westbourne Jazz band when they played at Hyde Park and Rolf Harris was there. We brought a little didgereedoo with us and Rolf signed it. Also, nothing untoward happened.

Lastly, I was in Westbourne Jazz band from 1988 to 1993. I played trumpet/cornet.

How spooky!

When I was playing in a Sunday League game in Barnes about 15 years ago, David Beckham's son was playing a match on the neighbouring pitch (his dad was there to watch, but players from both teams in my game were racing to take throw-ins near him so they could have a chat, so he ended up moving to the opposite side of the pitch...) Never got the chance myself, as too focussed on doing my job on the opposite wing

Went to same school as Hannah Spearitt from S Club.

Went to same college as Myleene Klass from Hearsay.

Was at Sheff Uni with Simon Kendall (Howard K's son). Unsurprisingly he is a very good footballer.

Worked in a hotel in Gorleston on sea, and my boss was Jeremy Goss' wife. She is a really nice lady tbf.

Saw Nichola from big brother series 1 in an alleyway near my house a couple of years after her fame.

Have a water bottle from an elite Spanish athlete from the London marathon in 2017. Can't recall his name.

Met Ted (bass player i think) from Mumford and sons at a swanky photography exhibition in Shoreditch, that my wife wanted to go to. He was a nice guy and quite funny tbf.

I was thrown out of RE by the nun who went on to become Myleene Klass' music teacher. I only discovered this as Sister Carmel was interviewed on TV after Myleene's big break.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

Got bumped into by Melvyn Bragg, fittingly while me and my partner were walking along the South Bank. Tbf she recognised him, I didn’t.

Edit

Also, I went to school with Robert Tilney, one of the experts on Antiques Roadshow. He didn’t have a handlebar moustache then though

LAX August 1980 our PanAm 747 had "parked" away from terminal & everyone bused to arrivals- Ringo Starr and his wife were ushered past everyone to the first bus which was for first class only

Same holiday, met Muhammad Ali in a magic shop somewhere near our hotel. He was every bit as engaging & charismatic as you'd hope especially towards us as due to being English.

Made 3rd page of Evening Star with a teenage prank (anonymously)

Worked 16 years with a London Chauffeur company & have driven; Yusef Islam (aka Cat Stevens), Chris Evans & Billie Piper just as paps getting wind of impending split, Sir Richard Branson

But as a legitimate crap (& tenuous) claim to fame...

Drove Clarkson, it was the day of British GP 2006, most of our better Chauffeurs were on GP Duty & Virgin had a booking for Clarkson. Virgin demanded a senior Chauffeur, as one of the managers I volunteered. Swapped my E Class (which he'd recently verbally trashed) for a Volvo XC90 (which he'd reviewed kindly) & head off to his place near Chipping Norton.
Another Virgin stipulation was that the driver meet Clarkson wearing a white crash helmet, it was too small for my big head.
When I got him into the car I did my usual routine about safety & comfort, the hung over Clarkson mumbled about not worrying about safety. He directed me on his route to M40 then fell asleep, stirring only briefly as I was ascending the Chilterns in excess of the National Speed Limit, grunted approval then dozed off again.

As we approached Heathrow T3 I was gripped with fear, anyone who has travelled in a Virgin Limo will know of the superior service provided but back in 2006 this involved driving between 2 concrete pillars in T3 car park this was my first time in the XC90, nervously blurting out as such.

Once successfully negotiated I said to him "nice & dull drive, just like it should be" he responded with a "hmmm"

Sometime after this TG had an episode where Clarkson, Hammond & May drove celebs to Brit Awards in custom stretch "limos" & getting into all sorts of scrapes, including concrete bollards.
I maintain my comment was the inspiration for this episode

Also remember receiving a long, personal & extremely intense glare from a very angry John Thaw playing the lead role during a performance of Serjeant Musgroves Dance in the Cottesloe Auditorium at the National Theatre in London 1981.

The Cottesloe then had wooden benches instead of seats, and as I had spinal issues which meant sitting up was painful, the Open University, whose group I was with as part of our drama course Summer School, had asked and received permission from the NT for me to lie down to watch.

Clearly this info had not been passed on to JT and he thought I was either rude, slacking or inappropriately bored! (nothing could have been further from the truth, particularly since the glare came well into the play at a particularly dramatic moment - which as part of his acting skills he probably realised was the optimal time to focus it). I did sit up in response!

Always meant to write to him and explain, but never got round to it. Hope the theatre management did so after the performance.

Me and a mate were voiced over by Punt and Dennis. It was an advert for Carling Black Label when BT were trialling Video On Demand, an early streaming service. It was all done under false pretences and they made us look like a right pair of muppets.

Suggs, a guest at a wedding I attended, took to the stage and sang a few Madness songs when the lead singer of the wedding band was late.

When he eventually arrived, he took to the stage and said "How can I follow that?"

During my second year at University in Leeds, one of the girls I lived with was seeing Dean Gordon for a few weeks. During that time he won a Rumbelows Man of the Match and let us keep the TV he got for the house

In that same house we also had Ian Rush and Lee Sharp come back after night out in Majestyk hoping for a threesome with another of the girls - however she ended up locking her door so they had to get a taxi home
