Pubs and clubs etc getting a 20% cut in business rates 12:04 - Jul 23 with 1222 viewsMullet

I dunno how much twtd have felt the prices going up and up when eating and drinking out, but is there likely to be much of a reduction?

The margins are so slim anyway and so many go to the wall up here all the time. With a £2 bus fare is this going to revitalise the night time economy much? Strikes me that youngsters don’t go out and drink like we did, so can we expect much of a cultural shift?

Burnham has been in office for 3 days & each day he's made a crowd-pleasing announcement. None of these amount to very much, so they are affordable. He's warming up the audience before he actually has to makes some of the tough spending decisions e.g. defence & how to fund it.

I suspect he will go after the rich and receive incredible backlash for his boldness. It seems even these things are being met with abuse, churlishness and selfishness online.

People are worried about what they get, not how it impacts society - that’s a mindset change he has to battle

Tax cuts like this for businesses rarely result in lower prices for consumers. Given how much hospitality businesses tell us they're struggling I very much doubt they'll do anything but take the cost reduction (all £1,100 of it) and use it to prop up their profits.

According to the government’s announcement, the businesses that are eligible for the business rates cut are:
Pubs
Social clubs
Live music venues

And it's not applicable immediately.

I wonder if any will be changing their operations at all to qualify too? A cafe/bar doesn’t qualify then?

This from today's Guardian.

"Wes Streeting has said increased defence spending would make “an enormous contribution” to economic growth, as he emphasised that the military will be a spending priority for Andy Burnham’s government over other departments.

Expectations that the UK would meet spending obligations originally demanded from all Nato allies by Donald Trump have been increased further by Burnham’s appointment of the former defence secretary John Healey as chancellor.

The appointment suggests No 10 and the Treasury are strongly aligned with the MoD in wanting to rebalance the UK economy towards defence, a notable shift from traditional Labour priorities of favouring spending on health and education."

Interestingly, there was a report recently which said that defence spending wasn't as good for growth as other government capital spending. I can't remember the details but one factor may well be that a lot of the money flows to arms manufacturers abroad.

And for my own part, I don't really understand why we are blindly heading towards 3.5% then 5% of GDP, given the figures have been plucked out the air by Trump and don't necessarily relate to need, especially given the fact that the EU alone spends three times more on defence than Russia. The figures also suggest fairly savage cuts to non-defence spending.

Of course, welfare (but not the triple lock) is the popular (and for me misconceived) area for cuts but that would appear to be at variance with Burnham's cost of living focus because it would affect those at the bottom, including many who are working.

Well it will have to go a reasonable distance down the scale, otherwise it won't raise enough to justify the inevitable flak.

Do we really need another thread on this? Sorry, not having a pop at you or anyone else per se.

But if you put "Gary Stevenson" in the search bar at top of page you will see many many many threads on this subject - one of which was literally less 2 weeks ago.

Just a stupid lazy comment thrown into the thread by Mullet, which is about pubs and VAT.

Apparently it is a £3 to £5 a week reduction for an average pub.

Its not coming in till April next year, plus alot of pubs business rates doubled or tripled this last year so sure 20% cut may help a tiny amount, but generaly wont, reality is alot of pubs won't benefit and will still be paying more. Even before the next round of increases kicks in.

Oh and its England only,Scotland & Wales arent covered by it.

So nice headline grabbing politician move, practically makes no difference.

I'm sure the BBC could do another one of those adverts on it to sell it to the masses

Its a good start. But as my local family run Italian cafe said this morning, from the news they won't get the reducion so he will assume in the afternoons most people will head to the pub over the road for food and not his cafe as the pub will potentially be able to reduce their cost of food.

He said he would wait and see, but cafes are closing as fast as pubs so he was unsure why cafes were excluded.

As i said to him there are always winners and losers when you try and target help.

All minor league stuff.

Let's wait and see what the big moves are. A 10% 'death tax' on any assets would gift the next election to Farage.

I would also be annoyed if he goes for capital gains tax at the lower end. A £3000 allowance is already taking the p1ss for assets bought with after tax income. By all means take more of any gains over £10,000 but let people make a bit of money. I think it's short sighted to tax everything to death while we have a pensions crises and people have little savings.

I imagine some sort of wealth tax is being lined up. I can't imagine that today's open letter from Lineker, MacDiarmid, and other millionaires is entirely unprompted.

Obviously we do need another one if we’re going to have pushback on policies that would close the gap on effective tax rates between the rich and the poor. I don’t see why we shouldn’t expect parity. Why should those receiving the bulk of their income through investment vehicles or complex company structures not pay the same tax rates at the same thresholds as a PAYE worker on the median wage? What moral justification can there be for the very well off having say a 10% effective tax rate while the poorest have rates of over 40%. At the moment the tax system seems a mess. It’s even highly variable for those at the very top depending how they’ve structured their income and wealth.

It’s obviously going to be gamed isn’t it. Maybe Phil needs to rename TWTD and we need to physicalise our occasional ‘bar’s open’ threads.

I think he’s pushing hard on optics at the moment, which even if it doesn’t have a huge impact is still very much needed. I see he’s also flogging social media. Again, in today’s society and especially for the young that’s very much needed. Look at what Mamdani is doing in New York - he’s all over the socials with little stunts. None are game changers in their own right, but they’re all positive. They may all add up to some meaningful changes, but even if not it still provides a constant drip feed of positive, progressive stories that gives people hope.

Business rates account for 2.2% of a pint apparently.

Average pint = £5.01. Rates bit = 11p. 20% of 11p = 2.2p

So with a bit of luck, we should save on average 2p per pint!

Just to align dividend and income tax is hard on family businesses who work their socks off to make a profit., Very different scenario to buying some shares and waiting for the dividend to be issued.
What is needed is some sort of seperation and treatment of :-
1/ dividends on investments where no work or enterprise has taken place.
2/ Family businesses where the risk and work has been put in. The dividends currently are y discounted as profits have already been taxed. Double taxation in effect.
I doubt it is workable though.

Following on from my post, I've done a very rough calculation based on the following from the Independent.

"Spending on the military, equipment and operations, including aspects such as the armed forces and the intelligence services, was £64bn in 2024-25.

This figure represents 5.5 per cent of overall Government spending and 2.2 per cent of GDP."

Had defence spending been 3.5% of GDP in that year, my calculation is that it would have made up 8.75% of government spending. And had it been 5%, it would have been 12.5% of government spending.

That's suggests an awful lot of cuts to other spending will be needed, and things aren't made any easier by economic growth because that will merely push up GDP, on which the 3.5% or 5% figure is based.

Defence procurement is also a bit of a black hole, isn't it? Long history of spending lots of money on defective or inappropriate equipment. Understand much of this latest increase is also going on American-made kit anyway, so I'm not sure where the GDP boost would come from.

Just causes pubs issues really doesn't it? A saving it's not even worth passing on when they are slowly dying anyway and a public who will largely expect to see a noticeable discount.
