Attack on Berlin Pride 22:25 - Jul 25 with 3623 viewsZx1988

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art

My heart goes out to all those affected, and to all those in the LGBTQIA+ community for whom the world perhaps feels a little less safe this evening.

My wife and I were at Norwich Pride this afternoon, and seeing this news sent a chill down my spine.

Not particularly.

I can't see how the police could not have shot him in the circumstances, but his death only turns him into a martyr and a poster-child for the POS who radicalised him in the first place.

Life in prison would have ruined that particular plan.

And by shooting him dead the intelligence services don't get the chance to interrogate him and potentially prevent future attacks from what they learned.

(Not a criticism of the plod)

Don’t you find it strange how so many of the gay community go on these marches supporting Palestine, yet part of the Muslim community hate the gay community?

Also if this had been a white chap or right wing supporter attacked someone this thread would have been on 10 pages by now?

When it’s this way round the hard left don’t want to know.

I couldn't give a flying one what this scumbags religion, political persuasion, whatever is.

Catch him, lock him up. It's not complicated.

He will probably be arrested and removed from Germany, then be welcomed to the UK with open arms by the usual people.

But worth nothing that many Islamic countries have prison, or even death penalties for being gay. Once part of state law then it becomes normalised as a view within society.

On a wider point it’s tragic the number of vehicle based attacks that have happened in Germany over the last few years. A liberal tolerant society that now has anti vehicle barriers for many events (albeit must assume there was none in this instance). Suggestions the suspect was known to authorities, I assume they are simply unable to cope with the numbers in n watch lists.

Arrested in Germany on terrorism charges. Sentenced in May but released due to time served. Carries out this attack just two months after being released.

Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened.

Yes, how dare the left show compassion to a group that may not show compassion to them.

Your world must be a f**king bleak place, if you reduce even the most common acts of humanity (such as opposing a genocide) to a transactional matter.

No, I don't find it odd. Muslims can be gay too, trust me, I've encountered a few.

Pride is a protest to fight for equality, and those who are or have been repressed community are extremely likely to acutely see it and fight for it in others - even when it's not as brutally obvious an ongoing genocide. So it's totally understandable lgbtqi people are keen to stop that which has happened to them also happen to other people, even if some of the people they want to help may hate them. I'm not a Christian, but this seems an age old approach to care, empathy & struggle that's been practiced for millennia and which is arguably the bedrock of community and survival.

At the other end of the spectrum to the Berlin attack, yesterday my husband was repeatedly homophobically shouted outside our flat at by a kid no older than eight. All groups and communities have hateful and homophobic people in them, even where I live and even this message board, and that's why we push for education, equality & understanding wherever they are and whoever is under attack.

Traditional Islamic law views same-sex sexual acts as a major sin, and mainstream jurisprudence considers the practice forbidden.

From the Islamic standpoint, homosexuality is a forbidden action; a major sin
and anyone who partakes in it is considered a disobedient servant to Allah
that will acquire His displeasure and disapproval. This is clearly stated in the
three main sources of the Shariah: The Quran, the Sunnah, and the
consensus of all scholars, which extends from the time of the Prophet till
today.

While homosexuality has gained greater social acceptance in many Western societies, it remains
highly stigmatized and, in most cases, forbidden in mainstream Islam. Theologically-based
homophobia has given rise to negative social representations of homosexuality in Muslim
communities around the world. Lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) Muslims themselves are acutely
aware of the stigma of homosexuality, and the prejudice and, in some cases, harsh punishment that
they may face if they disclose their sexual identity.

That totally ignores the fact that killing in Islam is an even bigger sin and a massive centrepoint of the religion. Very similar to Christianity and the thousand or more years of Christian culture in Europe.

Making a selective religious argument either way ignores the politics, culture and economic forces that have shaped these things around the world.

Killing in Islam requires proof and a formal decision even under Sharia law (and technically is meant to be avoided at all costs but certain countries aren't so good at that) If you kill unlawfully you get the worst punishments from God.

The Quran is pretty clear that killing someone is like killing everyone. The parts usually misinterpeted in the modern era refer to the Meccan wars and defensive actions often - Muslims and Christians both followed Just War principles of their own in the middle ages. So it's really important when people cite the Quran or the Bible etc the context isn't lost.

I just think if people choose to move to Europe, they should respect European values and culture and not go around killing people for going against what they believe.

I feel that would be a good start.

Seven Muslim countries retain capital punishment for homosexual behavior: Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Iran, Afghanistan, Mauritania, northern Nigeria, southern Somalia, the United Arab Emirates and Afghanistan.

So does Uganda which is “Christian” and the law was arguably as much political and so did we until the mid 1800s. No one is denying it happens (although how frequently it’s actually applied is seemingly rare and hard to track according to a quick search) and no one here is supporting it either.

It’s almost like it’s really complicated

And I think this going to make the 15th very interesting now. 300000 people are expected for rave the planet in exactly the same area as this took place. So security will be increased even more. Then add 50000 for the Hertha game, another 23000 for Union vs Town.

And that is why we need far more compassion because the real world can be horrible.

We need more love, more tolerance and more patience and understanding. Otherwise the real world becomes more hate-filled allowing individuals to be radicalised and potential murderers.
