That’s sad. I wasn’t a massive fan, but remember the Goodies well from my childhood. His greater value was to the conservation movement imo. That was quite a reinvention.

Done so much for conservation efforts in the UK.

Could've sworn I read a while back that he was a Town fan - but doesn't tally up with the fact he's born in Lancashire.

Manchester United and Reading, apparently.

I remember being entertained by the Goodies. Far superior to the lesser Grumbleweeds. Funny how these things go in pairs. Morecambe and Wise/Two Ronnies, Armageddon/Deep Impact.

Or something.

If you liked my post, please take the time to upvote it. It's very much appreciated.

Ah that's sad. One of my earliest advertising gigs I worked with Bill, creating some 'chewy-fruity-bar' based jokes, and my claim to fame for a while was that I'd written some jokes that Bill Oddie had laughed at and described as "quite good"!

We were warned, before meeting him, that he was prone to being somewhat erratic and difficult, but we got him on one of his good(ie) days.

Bit of a comedy legend, for me.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

RIP. Did enjoy the Goodies but as you say, amazing contribution to conservation - oh and Alana Partridge.
"The last osprey egg is scrambled for Russian oligarchs… and Bill Oddie goes apeshit. He shows up at Claridge's wearing his twitchers’ gear, and the pockets are full of every conceivable explosive. He walks into the buffet area... People turn around, they say, 'Isn’t that the man from Springwatch?' Someone else says, 'Wasn't he one of the Goodies?' Yeah, not anymore. Now he’s a baddie. Seconds later, carnage. Oddie is like a bearded Catherine wheel, scything through the crowd. Ironically, the oligarchs wearing the leather jackets are protected from the worst of the blast, but an innocent couple from the northeast on a city break are vaporized."

This was tough one,

I loved his voiceover stuff and Bananaman was oddly a big part of my growing up.

My wife was introduced to him when she ran an exotic animal rescue and he invited us to his house. Wonderful bloke, dropped the f bomb in the first sentence about the parking being f*king terrible round there.
had tea and biscuits and a chat, then he made my wife's day when he took us round the park and did some birdwatching.

can't speak highly enough about him as a person (albeit brief) but as patron he kept in touch and was as helpful as he could be

I remember watching him on the TV show 'Who do you think you are?', it was an amazing one. He discovered as a result of that programme that his Mother had spent a lot of time in mental hospitals, whereas he had grown-up thinking his Mother had just abandoned him when he was a child. He spent most of his childhood lonely, bird watching was his only outlet.

I worked with people who had worked with him at Southern or TVS on the kids' Saturday morning show he did and heard tales of Olympic standard irascibility and not particularly enjoying working with children. Nevertheless, they seemed to have quite liked him, if I remember rightly. RIP, ecky thump.

Will be sadly missed here, for both his conservation work and comic abilities - one of the few comedians I found really funny.

"I didn't know they did that"

That's how I'll remember him as he posted that in a comment on a video I posted on YouTube. I was too starstruck to reply.

Loved him as a comedian and as a naturalist.

He will be missed.

Sad to hear this.
I loved the Goodies and was always taken in by his enthusiasm for nature.
85 is a decent knock I guess but it's another part of my childhood gone.
Go well Bill.
