I think, a few of their fans are getting a bit twitchy about the lack of incoming transfers and a narrative has started up that, "Hull and Ipswich need to do far more that us before the kick off, that's why we won the league so easily".
I'd argue it's Cov and Hull who need to do the most work, they are also predicting themselves to finish anywhere up to 12th.

The gap between the Championship and Prem is so vast now that to have any hope of staying up you're needing to invest massively in your playing squad, and hope that 2-3 more established teams have a nightmare season. We all need to be praying that Fulham, Palace, Sunderland, Leeds have as tough a time as West Ham and Wolves had last season. It'll take a miracle for any of us to stay up, and I'd say Coventry are the least likely to achieve it. |
I’m confident we can finish above Coventry and Hull because neither are prepared for the season they have ahead of them and I think we have stronger starting point than both of them and we look to be doing better business on the transfer market at present.
Leeds fans, who I find some of the most annoying of any team, seem to think they are now an established Prem league team so I’d like to see them struggle but we only need to finish above one of those teams. Sounds easy but we all know what a struggle it will be.

Given the quality needed to stay up, I increasingly think the 'race for 17th' will come down to who is able to best tap into the loan market at the end of the window. A lot of this will be total luck, but it is an area that Frank Lampard might do better than most in - either via his connections or through being a bit famous. Who knows. |  | | |

I think Coventry are similar to what we were last time. Aware of a gap, thinking momentum and vibes mixed with some big signings is enough. It went ok for the first half, but second half of the season it was not. I suspect it may be a similar trajectory for Coventry.
Hull, if they have any sense, will realise it is impossible to stay up but invest strategically and plan for a bounce back after relegation (as, perhaps, in retrospect it will be seen that we did).
So, after that, who else may be low down. I think Fulham will be in and around the bottom few. I suspect an otherwise stable club like Brentford or Bournemouth may struggle and not quite know how to clamber upwards.
And I think, Crystal Palace may be the surprise one near the lower end, they have a lot of issues around the club, are spending money on the stand that may limit player signings, fans are never that comfortable with owner, a new manager who needs to hit the ground running, and the complication of many midweek european games.
Oh, and for giggles I would love TOttenham to be down there, but I suspect they will be safely upper-mid table. |
Coventry as a team are much worse than we were last time, without the big signings yet. What I would say is that the fixture list crippled our momentum, if we'd have been able to have got that first win or so under our belt sooner it could have been a bit different I think, instead the second half of the season became a massive slog with broken morale, maybe they'll get more fortunate. | | | |

Sort of agree, but it was less about the quantity of signings, and more about the quality.
Not enough of them made a noticeable improvement to our team, which meant it was squad churn without the upside. |  |

I thought we made too many signings (I know I've banged on about this enough already), but most importantly they were in the wrong positions, right down the spine of the team.
For what we potentially gained in 'higher ceilings' with Greaves over Burgess, Phillips/Cajuste over Morsy/Mass, and Ben Johnson over whoever was ahead of him, I think we lost more in terms of familiarity, understanding and game know-how. I won't get into the Muric situation because it's all hindsight now, but that was another huge disruption.
As for Coventry and the question I'm actually trying to answer, I don't think they're in a bad place at all. As others have pointed out, they've got genuine pace in the side and a few big, physical lads too. If Rushworth does come in, they have added a decent keeper. Throw in a bit more quality in the middle of the park and perhaps a striker with PL experience, and I think they could surprise a few.
I think momentum can carry a team a long way. Unfortunately, I don't think we ever really gave ourselves the chance to find out last time around. [Post edited 28 Jul 13:20]

I don't think Clarke is "very fast". He's certainly not slow but as wingers go he would be middling at best. Philogene has got pace but he doesn't burst past people.much. I haven't seen that clocked speed for him. 34km/h seems.to come.up.
They also certainly don't tick the power category.
You are probably right I'm the "how we played" contributing to not looking as quick and maybe how the opposition played. But we do have quite a lot of players who lack pace and would be top players with it e.g. Nunez, Mehmeti . Not sure on Egeli as I think there is more pace to unlock.
Coventry defence would worry me and they don't have nearly as much quality in depth as us.
Davis is pretty rapid to be fair.

It’s not just about pace. It’s about speed of thought, awareness and control too. Clarke is not particularly pacy but added to the above skills I think he’s a heck of a player. Think back to last season where he sent more than one defender shopping with his movement, including the Coventry hoofer for the second goal against now much vaunted Coventry.
Think back to Marcus Stewart. No pace whatsoever, but he left them for dead because he 5hought quicker and his first movement was quicker. Players who have the lot like Mbappe are a rare species.
Nunez? Moves the ball quickly and can pass. Mehmeti? Quick enough but where to play him. Squad player?
I’ve seen post about too many new signings last time and not enough quality. It’s a fair point. We were of course venturing into the unknown. We are not now and hope we have learned. Looks that way.
What killed us last time was the midfield. We didn’t have one. Phillips and Cajuste - waste of loan money. If we can bring in a couple of premier standard players there, we will have a much better go than last time. Lots to do

Got to admit last time round I thought we didn't need to do much business and had a decent shot at a lower mid table finish. I based this on Burleys first Premiership season. In the end I was shocked at how much the gulf between premier league and championship had grown. Coventry have been away longer, they don't know what's about to hit them |
Agreed. At the start we made a decent go of it, and did get a bit unlucky with some games. However, the top teams are just so much better. You've got no chance against them really without luck.
However, the Premier league is relentless. Once you get in a rut it's hard to get out of. You know any mistake gets punished.

They'll be in for a MASSIVE shock. I think anyone that plays as open and front footed as them and doesn't adapt gets a shock when they go up. We saw it ourselves. Their fans saw how they played in the Championship and think that can be translated to the Premier League. If they take that approach, they'll be sitting ducks.
And... the reason they finished so far ahead of us was we spent about two-three months trying to get out of the negative rut that our previous campaign had left us in. From November onwards, Ipswich and Southampton were both ahead of Coventry. That's a statistical fact.
What we're doing differently this time is building a team with more humility and knowledge of the league, ready for the scrap. Still plenty of players needed, but by the start of the season, we plan to have a team that is ready to sit deep and get our success as underdogs. You have to earn your right to play at this level.
Still plenty of time left in the transfer window for them to recruit, but as it stands, they're my favourites to finish rock bottom. I can't say I've been overly impressed with Hull's business either, but I do think they're taking a more sensible approach. |  |
