I reckon we’ll probably spend another £100m or so 17:31 - Jul 28 with 2978 viewsIP1Blue

We’ve probably spent about £90m (including add ons) and sold 10m with Muric/Baggott (including add ons). We’re looking at probably another £50m+ in sales/loan fees (Philogene , H Clarke, Al Hamadi, Palmer, Szmodics, Humphries, Ogbene, Egeli (loan), Akpom (loan).

If we do spend another 100m - gives us a net spend of about £120/130m which is probably about what I thought we would do: I reckon it could maybe be on 6 quality signings in these positions with top division experience - I think we’re far from done in this market!

I agree pretty much with all you've said, the key will be getting them done asap, we really want a bear minimum coming in after the season kicks off.

Another RB is equally as important, if not more so, than another LB.

I think if we have another 3/4 before Sunderland and then maybe 2/3 more after a lot of teams have made up their minds with squads etc we’d be in a good position

Given our reported offer the other chap at Union SG, I think it’s clear that the club feel that’s an area we need to improve on - just a shame we as of yet can’t convince him to come here.

Potentially but I reckon they’ll think Furlong/Johnson is solid enough for the time being - if you bring another RB in, you’d have to sell/loan of one of the 2

I have you a bit light on what we'll end up spending. Nett will drop a bit, as we'll sell more - and one or two might be high ticket sales/

Recruitment this summer by SuffolkPunchFC 23 Jul 23:26
I’d say £150-200M (so another £80-130M) with 5-6 more arrivals. Gonna be an interesting balancing act, as 1/3rd of the squad need to be home grown, and we’re diluting that mix with new signings.

Yes. It's called raising the floor of the position. Furlong is a walking red card at PL level, for sure. Johnson may suit a structured/counter-attacking side, but certainly not one to hang your hat on for 38 games.

Definitely need another RB.

Remember O'Shea has played right back for Ireland. And we know Greaves can do a good job on the left. Still would like cover for LB after Townsend has now gone.

Ben Johnson got pretty consistently shown up when playing as an out and our right back in the PL.

I seem to recall Semenyo getting all kinds of joy in the 2-1 heartbreaker.

Last time we had 3 of these 4 at all times ...

- Clarke
- Johnson
- Tuanzebe
- Godfrey

There is always flexibility and neither have really proven themselves at this level recently.

Furlong is an intelligent, experienced player who will adjust to whatever the shthousery rules are in the Premier League this time around.

I think he’s a much better player than people give him credit for. He has a good positional sense, is big and robust. He rarely gets injured too and that’s important. There’s no point in retaining players who can’t keep their fitness however good they are. The only downside was his final ball was often wayward. He has a good understanding with O’Shea too.

I do get this but the level of winger vs the prem is just on a different level.

Who was the best LW he would have played last season? Scienza/ Sorba Thomas/ Dobbin?

All three of those would be the worst that the PL has got to offer.

We hope he can adapt but what he did last season is not close to comparable.

A bear minimum you say?

Rupert might not cut it in the top division. Those yellow trousers suggest that he’s more Bargain Hunt than the bargain we hunt.

Not every team is Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal. I saw the Premier League last time around and Palace v Chelsea last season. Plenty of teams are nothing special, Palace in particular.

Yes, they were all better than we were last time, but we start with better players this time around. They need supplementing/upgrading in the right areas, not wholesale replacement. I’m not going down the Coventry deluded route, but neither am I as pessimistic (or hopeful in numbskull, bitter Sutton’s case) as some.

Another RB is a nice to, not need to in my view. We have other areas to strengthen first.

There is a lot of rough estimates / speculation here before that gets called out!

I think we need to spend that value to be competitive but I dont know we will or can spend that. Competitive from the outset probably means

X 2 CM (~£25-30m at least one in that bracket)
X 1 LB (~£10~15m to push and share games with Leif)
X 1 Striker (~£20-25m)

That list is not £100m or £90m!

Last time we were probably a £40m CM, £25m GK, £25m LB, £30m CD, £30m L10, £30m extra striker short of a shot of staying up, may be a CD, CM, Striker would have been enough.

This is not anyones fault but I would say we are struggling a bit to bring these to the club otherwise they would be here for preseason, so we either have other plans or we are in a long queue waiting or worse hoping for dominoes to fall our way. This was always going to be one of the tough things to solve, bridging that gap between Champ and PL in one summer window. You cant build and retain this team in the champ.

We know the season will be hard, weve made a good start on attracting different profiles but there is a lot still to do, and a lot of players to shift off the books too.

I didn’t quite get this point.

” That list is not £100m or £90m!”

Totting it up it is £80-100M, so don’t quite get what you’re trying to say?

That’s not the main point I wanted to address though. It’s always about dominoes, especially for a newly promoted club waiting for those at the top of the chain to complete key signings. It was unrealistic to expect the (hopefully) best signings in before pre-season.

Unless we want to sign lower-level players, you can’t get away from the value/cost a player has. High quality ‘frees’ and loan signings do come with a high cost associated, and still have to be valued at the level we’re aiming to recruit at.

I agree.

If Furlong or Johnson starts the first league game then either we have missed out on a target or someone hasnt done their job, or both.

I wouldnt be surpised to see Johnson move on this summer as he probably has slightly more resale value, that said he probably half covers more positions than Furlong does.
