The UKRI, which controls the budget for the iconic telescope says it can't find the 2.8m needed to continue it's operation.
It did however manage to find 50m to fund a silicon valley AI start-up.

It’s very disappointing, but people want weapons and not the other boring stuff that physicists come up with, like treatments for cancer, the electric motor, jet engines, radar, the Internet. Better to have more bombs.
Stuff’s getting expensive, especially large state of the art research facilities. The real value of research funding budgets has also fallen since 2020, which with the added inflation-driven coats over this period has been a double whammy. UKRI also haven’t changed their grant funding levels for donkey’s years, so individual grants barely cover the basics now. Academics applying for funding often can’t afford a research assistant for the whole project term now, whereas they’d have easily have had 1 post-doc full time and a couple of PhD students 10 years ago.
Also the government’s focus on immediate economic growth is starting to bite, with funds increasingly directed according to potential profit rather than scientific value.
At least we’ve got EU funding back.
The real issue that nobody outside of the sector talks about is how wasteful and inefficient the system is. The amount of work and time that has to go into preparing (and reviewing) proposals is off the scale. And yet the success rates within UKRI are horrendous. Often no better than 1 in 10 or so. 90% of what people do is unproductive. |  |

It’s not a lot in the context of their budget. Based on Brian Cox’s comments it’s not from lack of need from the community either. I’m a bit out of the loop now though, so haven’t heard on the grapevine any of the politics behind the decision. | |

They are also cutting most funding from the UK to the Vera Rubin and James Clarke Maxwell telescopes.

I love the visitor centre there. I think they've done a great job to make it both informative and interesting. No, its not a theme park, but most families I have taken there from adults to young kids, have really enjoyed it. £15 quid for an adult, and £10.50 for a child. Its not astronomical ( see what I've done there!).... | |

I've actually written about this extensively on linkedin. I'll not share it so as to not out myself, but if we're relying on tourists to prop up our position as leaders in the global scientific community, we've got significant problems.
In the real world, I do a lot of voluntary work with providing outreach for an astronomy charity. Try and engage and inspire young people to consider STEM.
Then the government just turn around and show their utter contempt for the sector. | |
