| Harry Clarke in the first XI last night ... 13:41 - Jul 30 with 2724 views | Bellevue_Blue | I wonder if he's been one of those who those who has suprised O'Neill? Looked much sharper than Furlong/ Johnson last night which is telling given they've all had the same break. I know pre-season games mean nothing and we cant take much from it but he might suit the switch to a 5 more than we expected. Ben Jacobs reported a few weeks back that a number of clubs were down the line with him and now that's gone pretty quiet? | | | | |

I was going to say, unless he's massively improved, he's nowhere near a premier League player. If he's the answer at right back, we're screwed. I suspect he would be 3rd choice at best. He's likely to leave.

I think, unfortunately, he's just not quick enough to cover the ground required to play RB.

I don't think he is the answer but it's pretty clear we aren't going to get rid of Furlong/ Johnson and Clarke so there is an interesting battle there. I just thought it was an interesting observation that he played with the first team last night.

Many who are about to be sold will have pre season minutes, proves fitness to potential suitors as well.

I expect him to be sold permanently to a mid table champ club for about what we paid.

He's loads quicker than Furlong and nobody is questioning his involvement? | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I'm not sure about that? I believe he played right wing for a lot of his time in youth teams? Either way, that was a long time ago now.

Honestly, posts on TWTD so quickly shift from the OP. Question asked in the OP: I wonder if he's been one of those who those who has suprised O'Neill? Answer: We need much much better than Harry Clarke I'm not suggesting we don't! I asked given he started with the first team, could we assume he has had a positive impression on GON.

I am but Furlong is generally smart enough not to find himself too far out of position to expose his lack of pace or at least to take his man out before he's very obviously exposed. As much as I liked Furlong last year he's certainly not the kind of player you want in that position if you want to develop a player like Walle Egeli. But Walle Egeli is a completely different discussion and I really think he needs a lot attention if we're going to get anything from our investment in him.

He has now been a 1st team player at a few clubs and under several managers but not really set the world on fire. Would like him to have made it but there is obviously something he falls short with . . .

The thing is, last night both Harry Clarke, Humphreys and Burns were three of our better players. Burns still looks better than most of the players we have spent a small fortune replacing him with, and he's 30 something and had some nasty injuries... so who's getting the sack?

If GON is going to play a different type of football, or wants his players to be good at a particular thing, then, sometimes, players can just fit. The lad has good pedigree, he was at Arsenal, had an insane op on his achilles, could come good still. Amazes me how people just write off players because they've not 'made it' already. I'm not saying he or Furlong are Premier League starters, mostly because you'd expect them to get picked up already, but, things change, people change, players mature etc. Dan Burn dropped down leagues then came back to the very top. Jarrod Bowen didn't make an immediate impact, Ryan Yates..of course, VArdy being another, all outliers, appreciated. Some players look terrible under one manager then turn into completely different players. Being realistic, whilst he's probably quicker than Furlong and Johnson, he's not as big/strong, so is at a disadvantage there, so I don't think he'll be here come September, but, you just don't know. At 25 time is ticking though.
