| manchester mayor: are voters seeing reform as they truly are now? on 23:36 - Jul 31 with 1741 views | Guthrum | Interestingly, in a very low turnout (25.1%) by-election - which is usually better for smaller, more motivated and insurgent parties - Reform has still failed to come close to challenging. Labour nearly won it on the first round (just under 3% short). | |

i think the tories and lib dems are fringe parties at this stage! what i meant is that even if you add reform and restore's votes together, they're still miles short, whereas reform were sweeping the board in the local elections in manchester on their own, so the reform voters haven't all gone to restore...

no i agree they haven't all gone to restore, but I would imagine that the overwhelming majority of those restore voters previously voted reform. i just wonder if nationally, in the coming months, we will see the rise of Rupert and the fall of Nigel.

Solid election strategy from Restore here with their 'let's ban decent curries' policy.

I said months ago that they had peaked and won’t be anywhere near forming a government come the next ejection. Ditto the Greens peaked earlier this year.

https://gmelects.org.uk/result Restore did well in Wigan (which shouldn't be in Manchester anyway but don't tell Andy) and it's a good hunting ground for racists. White, incredibly poor, isolated and lacking in investment. Greens did well in Trafford and Stockport which has a lot of young families and gentrification happening in the last 5-10 years. Restore also ran a campaign based on their candidate's daughter being raped - and generally when they appeared in Manchester they got abused and shunned - Badger's video was a good exmaple where the bloke got piled on for doing it. The biggest reason Labour didn't run away with it even more, is the students not being here. They make a massive difference to votes like this. Telling the bots were straight out with a MAGA style "stop the steal" type rhetoric and claims of a fix.

25% Is a terrible turnout. 75% of the electorate didn’t bother to vote.

I don’t think you can read too much into that. Lately there has been a lot of tactical voting to keep Farage out. It looks like an England is starting to do what Scotland has been engaging in. Labour voters voting Tory if they are most likely to beat the SNP and a Tories voting Labour to do the same. In the next general election I would imagine we will see a lot of that which will favour Labour, Tories and Lib Dem’s and squeeze a reform out.

It's never been particularly high in the Manchester mayoral elections, and I don't suppose holding the election in the middle of the school summer holidays has helped. Perhaps surprisingly, I have not heard any political commentator make this point. [Post edited 1 Aug 9:24]

Owen Jones had an article in the Guardian about a visit to Clacton and wrote this. "Unless there is a secret army of shy Count Binface voters, the comedy writer turned “independent space warrior” – popular on social media – will not triumph here. I find only a couple of people intending to plump for him."

Or people genuinely are beginning to realise what a scam the Reform party are? No-one surveyed over the last 18 months thinks Farage is a better PM than any of the leaders (bar Polanski) for instance.

Typical stuff: "Take some arbitrary historical point after I think all my ancestors arrived and before you or yours did - and then freeze society in a fictional, mythologised version of how things were at that point, regardless of the economic and geopolitical environment."

I often visit my partner lives in the constituency and I know a fair few voters. Farage win guaranteed imho. The poster count is literally 100 Farage posters to 1 binface. Even voters I know who detest Farage are either not voting or spoiling their ballots.

"In the May elections, Farage’s party won more than 100 seats across Greater Manchester, including all but one of the 25 up for grabs in Wigan – the borough of Burnham’s new constituency – and 18 out of 19 in Tameside, both once solidly Labour areas." Taken from an article I've just read.

Weird how the very senior Tory scumbag Graham Brady was my MP for a while, how the Greens won in Tameside against Reform etc. It’s almost like you’re talking prejudicial sh1t

Interesting to compare votes in Mayoral election with Greater Manchester local council elections: Council elections: Labour 23.7 Con 10.2 Reform 30.6 Green 19.2 Lib Dem 9.5 Mayor Election (1st Pref) Labour 47.1 Cons 7.7 Reform 21.0 Green 12.2 Lib Dem 2.8. Restore 8.7 Together with recent byelections it looks very bad news for Reform. They had quite a presentable candidate. She denied she was far right - used to be Labour, a bit Blairite in her presentation. The rise of Restore is a big problem for Farage. Over 75% of the public don't want Reform, and there will I suspect be massive tactical voting against them whenever the election comes. [Post edited 1 Aug 10:26]
