To do all our business we really need to sell one of Clarke/ Philogene don't we? 12:54 - Aug 13 with 3679 viewsBellevue_Blue

With Enciso and Ouattara our spending is nearing £140M.

Yet we are absolutely two short, maybe three.

We need a decent LCB to compete with Greaves, we need a starting striker and ideally we need a more positive 8.

That's probably another 50M of players. We can make up some of it with Hirst/ Clarke/ Palmer but we are probably going to need to sell one of Clarke/ Philogene arent we?

Need? No.

That's not to say it won't happen for other reasons (squad balance and size). But finances won't force it on us.

I think this is the issue with the Football Manager generation. No one really knows what we've spent, what we've recouped and what our financial position is, but sticking a few numbers down on the back of the fag packet and we can assume what has to be done.

We will never know, but it fills those quiet days between signings!

I thought we would spend somewhere between £150m - £200m with £50m maybe coming back. Notwithstanding spending rules, just in real life terms.

Muric and Szmodics have gone, that’s got to be £10m. Hirst and H. Clarke rumoured to be out on perm deals, probably another £7m between them + add ons. Bits and pieces from Ogbene, AAH, Palmer might get us between £20m - £25m. Taylor could bring in a fair bit too. I feel like there’s a big ticket departure, could well be Philogene if there’s interest at the right money. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s £50m+ of departures by the end of the window.

£20-25m for Ogbene, AAH & Palmer! Can I have some of what you’ve been smoking please?

Edit: apologies. Reading again I see they’re making up £3m or so in your calculations

Szmodics has only gone on loan, H Clarke and Hirst were supposed to be joining Stoke for a combined £13.5m, although that’s gone a bit quiet.

I’d be happy to keep J Clarke, Philogene and Taylor if squad size permits it.

Ogbene, Palmer and AAH would get £10m between them, anything more is a bonus.

Less Football Manager generation and more current financial controls in football combined with a limited understanding around accountancy rukles and regs.

Looking at the gross or even net spend totals is flawed as that is not how it player purchases are accounted for. Also you now have to factor in head coach costs and wages in the new SCR regulations and this is based on a season and not a 3 year period like PSR was.

I don’t think we need to as such but I can’t see a world where one hasn’t left by September 1st. Wouldn’t be massively shocked if both left and one more came in.

Amortization allows loads of flexibility really, ever wondered why Chelsea give 7 year contracts? Getting relegated with players that wouldn’t entertain the Championship with lots of years left on their contract is obviously a risk but you’ve got to give it a shot.

Look at Forest and Sunderland compared to Luton!

I think the fee involving Philogene may be putting off clubs as it would range between £30-£35 million,
As for Clarke he seems an ideal player for a Championship club. £12 -£15 million maybe ?

Clarke would command more than 12M you'd like to think for a parachute type club but I doubt we’d get much more (if any more) than we paid if people don’t see him as PL starter. Still could be a very savvy investment for a side if he helps get them promoted though, just only a few champ clubs in that bracket.

Or Leicester
That is the eay to bankruptcy and plenty of clubs have tried and failed
Sunderland aren't established yet and could struggle this season. Especially after an opening fame defeat.

I suspect squad numbers is going to be the limiting factor. I wouldn’t worry about £, it’s all dependent upon our financial plans over multiple years, contract lengths, terms, amortisation details, etc.

I think paying up to £17m for the relatively untried Outtara is at best risky, at worst nuts. Johnson, however mixed, has at least PL experience.

Jeez must be hard expecting the worst possible outcome all the time!

Anyway there are too many astute people involved with the finances at the club to “do a Leicester”. They got promoted already in a mess.

It’s our second stint, we needed to give it a go and not like we didn’t chuck a load of fees to be a pretty awful side at the level last time. We see clearly paying the wages this time though.

Fortune favors the brave!

Hopefully it works out and he can’t start or develop into a starter fast. A good profile of player that’s often translated well to the PL.

I’d have loved Diatta though someone who’s played the at the level for club and country.

Greaves is already competing with Diop, and Kipre is competing with Greaves.

Really need another one?

Kipre at LCB in the PL would be a disaster! We’ve only got one left footer.

GON has managed in the Prem before and saw Ouattara up close as coach last season. If his judgement is so poor that he's got this one wrong then we have bigger problems.

I trust the people in charge of the money at the club to follow the rules. Our chairman/CEO can only spend the money he is allowed to by the ownership.

When we start buying players using money loaned against future PL payments that's when we need to worry. That's what did for Leicester, they were spending like they were now a 'forever' top flight club and apparently offering silly wages so agents knew where to go for a quick payday for their clients.

If we want to play with 3 CBs, we can't really afford to carry only 4 senior CBs.

Leicester didn't go bankrupt as such, they overspent according to the rules at the time and got penalised.

Their financial troubles have been down to the owners' business interests being clobbered by global events (mainly Covid) and a less competent new generation taking over following Vichai's sudden death.

None of those things are, at the present time, much of a risk for Ipswich.

A bit risky (in financial terms), maybe, given his lack of experience. But £14m-£17m is not that much of a punt for the Prem in this day and age.

My point is that I don't think Ligue 1, apart from a very few teams, is PL level. If you look at his videos, it's clearly at a lower level to PL. And according to Strasbourg fans, GON didn't play him often. So, at best, potential.

Agree on the standard of Ligue 1. But O'Neil obviously has an idea where he'll use him at Town (or who he'll replace as cover) and Ouattara is young, so room for development, plus not take up a space in the 25.

Potentially a decent investment.
