You're reaction also very much illustrates my point, so thank you for that. There is a lot of confirmation bias on both extremes of the views about Ashton.

Care to elaborate on that?

You were talking about people who had always had it in for modest Mark- I didn’t have an issue with him until Farage and the associated reaction from him- not really sure I’m getting your jist and seeing as I’ve seemingly already misread you once, thought I’d give you the chance to explain?

The thing that this thread once again highlights is that we have a section of posters on the forum who have an unswervingly positive view of Ashton, and another section that have always had a negative opinion on him, and like to highlight every little faux pas.

The Farage debacle has empowered those who already viewed him negatively, and take every opportunity to resurrect their displeasure, and twist the knife. It had got boring 2 months ago, and it's even more so now.

Those that cannot see fault in Ashton rapidly leap to his defence, often blinded to how crass the original incident was, and help stoke the self perpetuating re-emergence of the debate. This also was boring 2 months ago, and is equally boring now.

No quarter is given.

People need to accept that the connection never will really fully go away - it's an incident that provides satirical opportunity for anyone who wishes to use it creatively. But it's now precisely that - a bit of satirical humour at our expense. It won't kill us, kidnap our loved ones, impact our work or playtime or lead to the demise of the club. As much as I despise everything Farage stands for, the Squires' cartoon made me smile. Because I see it for what it is, and recognise that it's not really that important in the greater scheme of things.

I realise that this will not change one iota of what the pro or anti posters want to say about Ashton or the Farage incident, but many (and probably the vast majority) have moved on from it, and the satirical pros really doesn't reflect badly on the club. Now if there was to be a serious journalist piece written about the damage fascist influences are having on the running of our club by the people who run it, that would be something to worry about - but that's not going to happen. Really.

I'm similar to Libs in that I never had a problem with Aston before the Farage incident.
I never even joined in with the Brent related threads. I thought he was an important cog of what has pulled this club out of the doldrums (and still do to some extent), but for me a line was crossed that I just can't get past. If others are happy to let it go, fair enough, but it doesn't make me or others who no longer respect him any less of a Town fan.

I don't believe this to be an accurate summary of the division we're witnessing here, honestly. I'd wager the anti-Mark sentiment expressed in this thread is largely the consequence of that one event and its handling afterwards, rather than long-held dislike or enmity latching onto a useful whopper of a mistake sometime later.

Agree with your instincts in the last two paragraphs.

I don't think before the Farage affair there were many at all that viewed him negatively. Maybe somewhat Brent-esque, but i suspect the overwhelming majority approved.

Sure.

In the first paragraph, which only talks about Ashton (not any mention of Faragegate), I make two relevant comments. Reference posters that :

”…have an unswervingly positive view of Ashton”

And, the others that :

”…have always had a negative opinion on him, and like to highlight every little faux pas.”

I then refer to ”The Farage debacle …”, which is pretty damning don’t you agree?

Debacle - great disaster, complete failure, fiasco.

Also: ”…cannot see fault in Ashton rapidly leap to his defence, often blinded to how crass the original incident was... “

Now, on balance, to me that reads as more critical of anyone who defends Ashton (which on reflection I regret, as I intended to be balanced).

The confirmation bias is that you focus on (the misinterpreted) comment ‘faux pas’ and suggest I’m downplaying Faragegate, despite the other comments I made which very much show the opposite imo. This bias (in my eyes) is equally present in those pro and those anti Ashton, and presents itself as ignoring or misinterpreting the context of a post because there is one small comment that they read as disagreeing with their position on Faragegate. I’m certain it’s not intentional, but (again imo) very evident in many posts, whichever side of the fence it comes from.

I certainly never suggested anyone was less of a Town fan, and made it abundantly clear that both sides of the argument are equally at fault of perpetuating this, and overstating the ongoing impact. I guess I should leave it at that, as it seems the point of what I posted is derailing - many of us have moved on, and just want to focus on the new season (with a very small amount of optimism of our chances now).

It’s not that deep mate- I misread it because I’m skim reading this place/replying to things quickly while looking after my boy who has high support needs, as it’s summer holidays.

I’m sorry to have made you feel so profoundly misread/misrepresented, but you’re going into levels here that simply weren’t in my consideration 😂

But how would you of dealt with the aftermath exactly?

Let's make you the CEO now, you have just had a huge PR disaster. You are in a hugely public position, your employers are watching your every move. Your customers have mixed views on the topic.

What precisely (word by word please), are you going to write?

Would you have, not would you of.

Just makes think about how many town fans read the Guardian, I realise its the go to rag for most on this forum.

It will probably come as a shock in your social circle, but the smarter people can read and digest more than several shouty words printed on the front of The Sun.

Spot on assessment.

Anyone defending Ashton on this particular issue, or attempting to downplay it is guilty of supporting Farage’s racist agenda.

It really is that simple.

The downvotes for this statement of fact will re-emphasise just who those individuals are.

The only consolation for those decent people who don’t agree with Farage’s ongoing crusade of blatant racism is that, apart from supporting Ipswich, they have nothing else whatsoever in common with those individuals.

I'm another who was pro Ashton before Easter, despite his Brentisms. He was an ar$e, but he was our ar$e. Reform, Labour, Tory, Lib Dem, Green, Count Binface, it doesn't matter. Politicians have no business being paraded around a football club. Platforming a prominent politician was 100% certain to alienate and cause discord among supporters, no matter the rosette. Private meetings are fine. Good to stay ingratiated with the powerful. Publicity junket absolutely not. To then lie about it and give a patronising, non-apology was the last straw for me.

it was a MISTAKE to host him.
It was a MISTAKE to lie about it.
It was a MISTAKE to give a textbook non-apology.

Farage is a quasi-fascist, anyone voting for him is a total moron, fully believe I am surrounded by morons on matchday, but that’s their personal business - as one of the leaders of our football club, higher standards are expected of Mark Ashton than Clive from Lowestoft who is a sparky.

So the majority of people are morons then...okay. Not the person calling someone a moron for their popular opinion. Okay. The term moron is a person that is rude. The very fact you are calling the majority of people a moron because you do not see what they see makes only one person here a moron. I'll see if you can figure it out.
