Ashton has done a remarkable job and the day he goes the football team will be in a worse position because of it. Yet people on here wish him gone for supporting a party that the majority of Suffolk support. (Most sitting around you on Saturday will support) Yes it was a mistake hosting the leader of said party but that's all it was, a mistake. Yet folk on this site, especially, would rather him leave because of that mistake and as a result see the team/club regress. I pity those in that boat. Firstly because you're incapale of forgiving someone who made a mistake and might see something different to you, and secondly because no doubt you're happy with the absolute state of the country. Strange times. |

The most I saw it mentioned after the event was the online stuff getting stuck in to him for being weak and apologizing but I said my piece at the time and got bored of it rather quickly after that tbh. Haven’t seen it referenced outside TWTD post Birmingham at home. Not that I’ve been looking either!

At one point it got so bad on Reddit that the admins had to step in because there were so many references to Ipswich being Nazis. https://www.reddit.com/r/Champ This was in May. [Post edited 20 Aug 14:57]

| Ashton on 12:35 - Aug 20 by Whos_blue | I haven't got the time or inclination to rise to your request for a word by word statement, but pretty much anything other than the mealy mouthed non apology we got would be a good starting place. Were you happy with what we got? No problem if you were. We're all individuals. I just expect a bit more if my CEO is tummy tickling a right wing agitator in the lead up to an election. But that's me. |
My reply was actually for copfordblue, but the point remains the same and you have side stepped it. Reason i ask the question is it is not easy to answer, and if you try i suspect you will end up with something similar to what he came out with. A bit wishy washy and not very satisfactory, but it is not easy to write something that placates one group without inciting another. The whole thing was a total balls up, not many would disagree with that. If you wanted him sacked for it, fair enough, but for me, if you are working in a public position for 5 years, you are going to get stuff wrong, and hindsight is a wonderful thing. Some of us are taking a more balanced view.

Lied about the visit, allowed Farage to mock KM and then issued a half-assed apology. Ashton is 92/100 rating on football matters. He’s been brilliant for moving the club forward. |

I haven't read the whole thread, but I would say that Ashton is the consummate COO. He does seem great at running the club, executing the vision, managing the internal projects, and improving "results" (in a business this would be revenues, for a football pitch its revenues and on the pitch - and he's done pretty well on both counts). And I say "executing the vision" because the owners have set that vision. Given his penchant for soundbites and his dubious decision making, this is where I would say he's a little exposed as a CEO. I would imagine he is a very tough taskmaster, and I hope that the Club is a good place to work for staff members and their families. Any leader needs checks and balances, and therefore he needs a big personality to balance him as a Chair. I would also like to see a proper "ExCo", rather than him being the absolute mouthpiece. This would reduce risk for the Club, both in terms of managing Ashton's personality, but also the key man risk that certainly exists if he were to depart. TLDR: Great operator, hopefully a strong internal leader. See me after class to work on your orating and decision making.

it was a MISTAKE to host him. It was a MISTAKE to lie about it. It was a MISTAKE to give a textbook non-apology. Farage is a quasi-fascist, anyone voting for him is a total moron, fully believe I am surrounded by morons on matchday, but that’s their personal business - as one of the leaders of our football club, higher standards are expected of Mark Ashton than Clive from Lowestoft who is a sparky.

Spot on, Ashton showed himself up as a hypocrite, a coward and a fraud and the fact that people are forgiving of that say’s nearly as much about them, as Ashton inviting a quasi-fascist to lunch does.

| Ashton on 17:10 - Aug 20 with 736 views | SuffolkPunchFC | The thing that this thread once again highlights is that we have a section of posters on the forum who have an unswervingly positive view of Ashton, and another section that have always had a negative opinion on him, and like to highlight every little faux pas. The Farage debacle has empowered those who already viewed him negatively, and take every opportunity to resurrect their displeasure, and twist the knife. It had got boring 2 months ago, and it's even more so now. Those that cannot see fault in Ashton rapidly leap to his defence, often blinded to how crass the original incident was, and help stoke the self perpetuating re-emergence of the debate. This also was boring 2 months ago, and is equally boring now. No quarter is given. People need to accept that the connection never will really fully go away - it's an incident that provides satirical opportunity for anyone who wishes to use it creatively. But it's now precisely that - a bit of satirical humour at our expense. It won't kill us, kidnap our loved ones, impact our work or playtime or lead to the demise of the club. As much as I despise everything Farage stands for, the Squires' cartoon made me smile. Because I see it for what it is, and recognise that it's not really that important in the greater scheme of things. I realise that this will not change one iota of what the pro or anti posters want to say about Ashton or the Farage incident, but many (and probably the vast majority) have moved on from it, and the satirical pros really doesn't reflect badly on the club. Now if there was to be a serious journalist piece written about the damage fascist influences are having on the running of our club by the people who run it, that would be something to worry about - but that's not going to happen. Really. | | | |

I viewed Ashton in nothing but positive light until he decided to invite a quasi-fascist to lunch, allowed him to use the club for propaganda for his racist party, lied about inviting him and did an embarrassing textbook non apology. Sure, I thought he was a little smug, but he’d done a great job for the club and had done nothing to the detriment of his own personal reputation or the clubs- it’s not a crime to be a w@nker, if it was, half the board would be locked up, me included. Calling what Mark has done a ‘little faux pas’ is the undersell of the century. Somethings are more important than football - he should have been chased from the club after Farage-gate. Unfortunately, Suffolk has a high level of support for Reform, as such plenty of knuckle dragging mouth breathers and polite apologists alike, see nothing wrong with Ashton’s actions and reaction - disgusting really, but there you go.

As I mentioned before I am politically apathetic and hence don't give two hoots about who Ashton invites to the club. That saying he should have known that inviting ANY political figure to the club would create some form of controversy - if not why the bans on political messaging in football, in the Olympics etc.? My gripe with Ashton is his attitude, wanting to run the Club like his own personal serfdom, his ego, having delusions of grandeur. Unprofessional behaviour in public (granted it was the sc*m). His treatment of Blue Action. Lying to the fans and public. If it is universally accepted that Eckert should face sanctions for spying, then why are people absolving Ashton for his lies? Tbh I'd rather have a not-so-brilliant but honest and straightforward person in charge rather than one who is deceitful. Seems many people don't really value INTEGRITY anymore.

"Calling what Mark has done a ‘little faux pas’ is the undersell of the century." Did I say that the Farage incident was a faux pas? Re-read what I wrote and the context - which is 100% accurate, and refers to things like how he speaks, the phrases he uses, etc. Plenty of examples of these, over many years. "...have always had a negative opinion on him, and like to highlight every little faux pas" My only direct description of the incident is to call it a 'debacle'. [Post edited 20 Aug 17:46]
