I actually have to say I thought he did well when he came on, if he ends up being third striker I can live with that.

Poll: How many team changes tonight?

I guess that unless you're one of the big 6, you can't have top class 3rd choice strikers. Paying someone £200k a week to just get a few minutes occasionally is something only the massive clubs could afford. So yeah, I'd rather have Chuba than GH, he looks like he can cause some problems for teams.

Agreed, we need another striker option as Akpom isn’t good enough to start imo should Emersonn not fit whatever reason

He's an underrated player. Didn't work out for him last year which can happen (same as his first year at Boro). If the team is firing and playing to his strengths he's a good finisher and has good ability. Ajax paid the better end of £15mil for him.

He is in good wages though we should remember. I don't think you pick up many better strikers in the market for £7mil to be honest. Especially not British. It's turned out a good bit of business to be honest.

He was constantly played out of position last season and was very poor as a result. Let's hope he shows more in his proper position.

For me the jury is still out.
I am still struggling to find the question that Akpom is the answer to.
But I am prepared to give him a chance to show us what he can do.

Thought the drop off from Emersson was big personally, he didn't look like threatening particularly, but he battled and won a few important free kicks which helped us over the line. Even if we'd secured a draw you'd probably say he did his job.

Akpom has not got Emersonn's level of athleticism enabling him to get up for the in-your-face press to the same degree (likewise Clarke is not so fast as Enciso), but he put himself about well and was properly engaged in the game, not something I've always seen in him.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I like Akpom and was looking forward to seeing him come on, but personally I felt the level was vastly different from Emmerson and as we know anyway we are looking for another striker and I think his cameo showed we do need it

For me, he didn't win anything, couldn't bring others into the game, didn't win anything in the air. He kept them busy, but honestly it just reminded me of when AL Hamadi came on in the last prem season.

Like the fella, think in the champ as a 9 or the his old 10 position he'd score a lot of goals

but for us, I can't see it working at this level

Abso chuffin lutely. Being played as a playmaker gave him no chance to succeed. That said I dont think hes good enough up top either to be effective at this level but time will tell

I think that is a little harsh comparing him to Al Hamadi, I was watching him in the ground and his movement was good, he took the defenders out of position a couple of times leaving space for other players, and he did hold the ball and keep position for us on a couple of occasions. I also think it is a little unfair to compare with Emersonn as Akpom didn't have Fatawu or Enciso for most of the time he was on the pitch, the quality of the whole front 4 dropped off with the changes (Clarke being the possible exception to that).

I am more than happy for him to be 3rd choice striker, knowing that Enciso could play as a false 9, or Maeda I believe has played as a striker for a lot of his career. We obviously need another striker, but the thing that made that most evident for me yesterday was however good Emersonn might be, he seems a way off in terms of fitness, he seemed pretty gassed towards the end of the first half, and was shot by 55 minutes I think (either that or he is one of those players that always just look exhausted).

Best bit was a coming together of legs with the CB, CB goes to put his hand and Akpom just waves it away and a f**k off to the CB. Good lad, I hate all that helping opposition players up, f**k em if they're on the floor leave em.

He did very little in reality when he came on- funny how people see what they want to see. He is still way way off the level required- I would rather have had Hirst coming off the bench. It feels like the Liverpool game two years ago when Harness and Ladapo were still playing- hopefully we sign who is required and we never see Akpom again.

The drawing defenders away is only part of the job. We had someone much better than him on loan and we returned him. I don't believe he would be here only we were forced to buy him. He was poor in the Championship last season ( albeit in an unsuitable role ) so I can't see him pulling up too many trees in the Premiership. We seem to be stuck with him so I hope he is able to contribute something to our survival.

He's not going to win balls in the air like Emersonn, but he does have pace, and I am sure there was one moment when we nearly managed to feed the ball through to him.

He’s a far better striker than Hirst. It’s why George was moved on and Akpom will get some minutes during the season probably as 3rd choice striker

I disagree there. If you take yesterday's game, Sunderland were starting to look comfortable in that 2nd half as we moved towards 60mins, it actually had 1-1 written all over it. Emmerson wasn't running at the same level, the press wasn't as good as the 1st half. Sunderland defenders especially had the look of ease on their faces
GON decided to make the changes to up the press levels again which the subs did.
Obviously it was a sub who scored but without the subs that games ends up 1-1, GON alluded to it in his interview.

Akpom isn't going to score 20 goals no striker who can score 20 goals is going to come to Ipswich as 3rd choice. Akpom came on was told to engage the press again, which he did and the press resulted in the 3rd goal.

I will also say people rave about Brobbey, and he's S'land first choice no.9. I didn't see anything in his performance that was shouting at me there is a 20 goal a season striker. I'm told he has pace and power, if he had pace Leif wouldn't get anywhere near stopping that shot in the first half. However what Brobbey does do well is use his strength to unsettle defenders and Akpom did that yesterday for us when he came on

Im afraid I'm not seeing what you are. Akpom came on on 65mins with McAteer so had plenty of time to affect the game. Neither did in fact until Clarke came on it was heading for a draw at best. I still believe we were forced to buy him and if we were looking for someone to run around being a nuisance we would have kept Azon who was better in that role. Anyway we are stuck with him and hope he does come good.

I'm with this - I think when he came on it was noticeable that our forward no longer had the size and strength to win the long balls and didn't have the pace to scare them behind. However he's a better 3rd choice than we had with Al Hamadi 2 years ago

Considering he can play with his back to goal, I’d say he would be a perfect third striker and a realistic one.

Won a couple free kicks, which helps get you up the pitch.

I remember him coming on and looking quite dangerous at saints away end of last year as well. A small role for him here this season you’d think and might be useful in the odd 3 game weeks as well.

Should play 90 Tuesday!

I get your view but i didnt make reference to scoring 20 goals in the prem. My view was that his overall play was poor in comparison to Emmerson and the difference was vast.

I do agree he held position in regards to sunderland being made to pass from the weak points but i cant say that i found him involved in anything much when we had the ball.

The other poster makes a good point however if we Akpom with fatawu and Julio we may see a different performance from him as better players around you always helps.

But if he did leave and went to champ i think hed score a load if teams used him as a striker over a forward
