| Mark Ashton Masterclass v6.0 on 06:49 - Sep 2 with 1033 views | franz_tyson | Bit too early to say how good it is, but it was a hard ask to get this squad somewhere competitive. If we'd stuck with our promotion squad, we'd be relegated already. We do need a bit of luck in not picking up injuries in certain areas. 4 months to the next window. Think they'll be a lot of movement out and probably a few loans in then. I'm still not convinced how good Palacios will be. Could be our best player and leader and brings others up a level or two. Could be a massive disappointment. Fair play for ambition, though. CM seems to be our strength.... or, at least, plenty of depth. Did we need Luis and could we have got a defender instead? | | | |

I think we will be alright defensively. If you ve a decent midfield you can control games and the defence becomes less pressured. It’s really not about last Sunday and this Friday. It’s how we shape up against the lesser lights. As for ‘Ashton Masterclass’, I always share responsibility for Transfer market successes and failures around, not least because I don’t know how the process works. It was described as Manager outlines what he wants, recruitment team ferret around identifying players. People then aporoach Agents, Clubs, players and the deal is scoped out. Player then meets various bods, and the Manager has the ultimate yes or no say and if all agree the deal is done. What part a CEO plays these days? I’d be very interested to know.

| Mark Ashton Masterclass v6.0 on 23:51 - Sep 1 by J2BLUE | In an alternate universe where Evans decided not to sell we are now in league one getting crowds of 10,500 signing players released from the likes of Lincoln on free transfers. We've come a long way. Would have been nice to get another defender in and possibly a RW for squad depth but zoom out a little and look at the big picture. We're in dreamland. |
Absolutely this. We were never going to get every position covered with ready made prem quality players in this window. I think everyone involved - starting with the owners who've had the guts to sanction this level of spending, to the analysts who've found the players who are available, to GON Who's checked them out and decided who he wants , to Ashton who's done the deals - has done a fantastic job. I really dont think we could have expected or even asked for more. It feels a little churlish for some to keep mentioning that we could do with more cover at CB. Yes we know that, but right now let's appreciate what we have and what might just be, with a fair wind behind us, a season of survival. PS - and I write this as someone who dislikes Ashton as a person. [Post edited 2 Sep 8:21]

There’s a truth to the concerns though isn’t there. We’ve got 6 defenders covering 4 positions if we’re sticking with a back four. That includes Furlong who doesn’t appear to be trusted over a makeshift rb and Kipre who’s untested at a top level, and a 20 year old who has potential but is also untested at this level. O’Shea, Greaves and Leif are part of the defence that shipped 82 in a PL season. You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to think that leaves us relatively light and weak in defence. People being targeted with troll posts for discussing football on a football forum is very weird behaviour. The slightly cult-like aura around one of our execs is also a bit strange.

I don't see anyone here worshipping in the cult of Ashton. It's a simple 'well done' for an apparently decent transfer window. Nothing wrong with that, and the 'yeah but racism' responses are a bit silly. Most of us are able to be critical of that episode whilst simultaneously giving credit where it is due.

We’ve got 7 defenders. 3 of 7 can play multiple positions too. You forgot the guy we spent £8.5m on, with 175 PL appearances. [Post edited 2 Sep 9:24]

Apart from the top three or four teams in the Premier League i would imagine that most clubs, and their fan bases, are sitting down this morning and saying “Yeah, but we’re still short in [insert area of field here]”. Truth is we, along with most clubs, have done what we can but there isn’t a bottomless pit of money and there’s a limited supply of players prepared to join us. Tbh I think we’ve done better than I expected us to in this window so hats off to all involved.

He has blue tinted glasses, anyone can see our defensive players on the bench are our weak link, So spending nearly 200million on midfielders and attackers is slightly unbalanced maybe like the poster lol,

Two contrasting views can be correct at the same time. Ashton and the recruitment team allowed the club to have a really good transfer window. Hopefully this will see the club hold its own in the PL - much more so than a couple of seasons ago. Well done Ashton and the recruitment team. Also Ashton is an egotistical prick who allowed hate-preacher Farage a great photo opportunity at the expense of club which in turn gave a lot of racists a massive hard-on.

Ashton isn't just an egoistic prick who invited Farage over at the expense of the Club. He is also bent on running a quasi-fiefdom as CEO and treats people as idiots, even Blue Action. It is his way or the highway. He is also an inherently dishonest and thick-skinned person who will not bat an eyelid lying to fans and the general public until he gets exposed.

Did he? I never knew. Thanks for letting us know. If Ashton had much to do with the transfers let’s dismiss them as rubbish. If he didn’t, let’s break out the hallelujah chorus and give the club a teeny bit of credit for giving it a real go.
