GO’N thought we were the better side after the goals…. 07:47 - Sep 5 with 2775 viewsITFC_Forever

What game was he watching?

We barely laid a glove on them and it was only due to a couple of close offside decisions we didn’t concede more.

The only positives were that we didn’t capsize completely and get hit for a cricket score and those decisions went our way.

GO’N thought we were the better side after the goals…. on 09:35 - Sep 5 by tractor_lady

Exactly this, no team is going to think ok 2-0 we have this won lets just not try anymore..... We did at times trouble them and upped our game without a doubt we just had little end product and despite shots on target not one tested their keeper. Liverpool will batter teams this year much more than 2-0

I also ask you to put yourself in Iraolas shoes at half time and wonder what the team talk / instructions might have been.

Knowing their first two games ended 2-2
They have Athletico coming up
We are playing open and will play more open to chase the game
They are already 4 pts off top
They have been criticised for a fragile defence in the media

I suspect it may have gone along the lines be professional, play for each other and the defenders, not your own personal objectives.
Don’t push too much or exert yourselves with what we have coming up
We have enough quality to score one or two more on the break
If they score early then we up the intensity and rebuild a 2 goal cushion
Most of all don’t switch off

That’s how I would be role playing it.
As I said in another post if they had only scored their second goal in the last 10
Mins and had been huffing and puffing to get the second I tink everyone in the forum would be in a much more similar place.

Also true that we can’t read anything into GONs positivity.
In the modern media managed world there is not much point to any form of press conference. It’s why I always let my assistant do them when I play FM - ha ha!

Yes, Liverpool scored 2, we scored 0.

Performance more important than scoreline in games like last night's.

We played well.

We’ve been too used to a manager that tells us the truth and went through everything in quite fine detail I’m afraid.

I think GON is one of those that says what we want to hear even if it means bending the truth.

In fairness, I thought he was very fair after the Manchester United game. But I do think he was too positive last night and that's a concern moving forward. The one plus was we didn't lose our heads completely, unlike at Old Trafford.

I doubt he really thought that but he will be acutely aware of the need to keep positivity levels up, especially given it really wasn't a disastrous evening and the team clearly has a lot going for it.

I agree, it’s the sort of stuff that Gary O’Neil tends to say though. We were blessed with McKenna who didn’t make these kinds of statements, so it’s going to feel a bit alien. The pre-match comments about taking points were also silly.

Would look at what he does going forward rather than anything he's said, honestly. He'll know what he saw last night.

His almost boyish post match over-enthusiam is obviously directed at keeping the optimism levels up for us and the dressing room for as long as possible, rather than see it dribble away in October as happened with totally honest Kieran. O'Neill's speech was to serve a purpose, nothing more. I am pretty sure O'Neill will be more realistic about the game when he has the usual post match autopsy with the coaches. If he is still maintaining that as a public line if we keep losing game after game, then he will lose us and the dressing room pretty quickly.

This idea that teams deliberately play at a lower level due to a game state is so over exaggerated.

They didn't have to score but they're still trying to score goals and defend properly! They are ultra competitive people who earn millions based on goals/ assist bonus'.

I'm sure Wirtz was desperate to contribute after a poor first season, Barcola desperate for a debut goal, Allison and co desperate for a first clean sheet etc etc

That's rarely how it pans out though, even for the superior side. How many times, either going against us, or, when we have been on the rise, have we seen that a team is say, 3-0 up, and fans start to mention cricket score, but it so rarely happens that the second half doubles a first half output of 3 or 4. Liverpool might be superstars, with the highest of human motivations, but it's a consistent observation that when the job is already really done, all-round commitment drops, and not just among the ordinary mortals.

We weren't the better team at any stage and that's OK in the big picture because these are not the games where we really need to be the better team and it's not reasonable to think we can be against those players.
But
We don't need to be gaslighted by our manager. We all watched the game and saw what a 100 million Striker can do and what 100s of millions buys you in talent. We all saw Liverpool take their foot off but still block our midfield and force us wide and stop Crosses. We all saw that marginal plays could have meant losing by 4 or even 5. Just tell the truth. They were better than us at this stage in our development and experience but we can learn plenty from the match that will improve us.
We don't want to go back to the Lambert parallel reality of being told what we saw wasn't actually what happened. I'm hoping he never played in a European final.

Yes agreed. He comes over as very PR trained, say the right things. The white teeth don't help.

However he can say what he wants if he keeps Town up.

It so rarely happens because there are human beings on the other side and there is professional pride at stake. They learn from mistakes, they drop deeper, they change formation to stop the patterns that are working.

Do you honestly believe All-round commitment drops? Yesterday did you see a Liverpool team that was not committed at any point? They defended hard until the very end, Barcola was breaking with pace with the intention of scoring and assisting.

We had the better XG and more shots than them. Maybe that was because they were quite comfortable at 2 nil up but its fair to say that outside of the silly 9 minutes, they didnt really lay a glove on us either!

Defensively, we are going to have some issues but there was enough in our build up play to show we will give plenty of teams problems.

It was quality in the final 3rd we really lacked. Leif in particular had a poor night with crossing etc despite getting into good areas.

Statistically we were better then them after their goals. But it's fair to say they limited our threat very well. Having said that we got into some good areas an hence we finished with better XG.

I was happy with the performance and impressed other than first 10. I'm not naive enough to say Liverpool couldn't have gone to another gear though. But if we scored the last 10-20 would have been interesting.

Absolutely amazed people are overly negative after that though. More positives. Mentally did well. Played pretty well. Bedded in new players. Better chances for points ahead!

Not negative. In my posts I’ve tried to accentuate the positives as well as the downside. There are plenty, unlike two years ago.

Stats don’t really cut it with me. It’s always about the flow of the game, control and threat. They were at a different level. That’s not actually a negative. It’s what I thought watching it. There’s no disgrace in that. Our team (all of them) tried right to the last and there were good and promising individual performances. It is what it is.

GON? I thought much of what he talked was a load of nonsense after the game. He had to really. There’s nothing to gained by doing anything other than talking about the good aspects.

Mick Mills was his usual good points and unfathomable tedium. He was full of praise for Fatawu, which puzzled me but given 10 million appearances, England caps etc etc, I’m guessing his judgement is a little more qualified than mine!

He made an interesting point about Davis and Maeda taking up the same space going forward. I think he has a point and is one of many things to work on to get the best from them both. Thought Clarke was terrific when he came on and it was noticeable that he was finding Davis with through balls without looking - it shows that players and partnerships need time and practice to understand each others game.

We belong.

What's more important yesterday? The scoreline or seeing promise and potential in the team?

A lot of teams will lose to Liverpool this season. Most in fact.

But we payed well. It's as simple as that.

Clarke was a huge positive last night. I thought he was really up to the pace required and was looking to do positive things. Generally the team were much quicker and aware than our 2024 team. Yes, there are things to work on, but I, for one, really think we can beat enough teams to stay up. Staying up is all that matters at this stage.
Last time we looked like a championship team out of our depth. So far this time we have looked like a Premiership team, just not on Man U and Liverpool level. But 10 others in this league aren't on their level either.
But we shouldn't pretend we are on their level either.
We know what we have to do.
