I've had a beer or two in there with Warky1970, Bojk and Burer. Sitters may have been there but it was that long ago he was probably in the garden with a bottle of pop and a packet of crisps whilst the grown ups were drinking.

I had a beer with Burer in there too.

Back in the days where had a few forum meet ups.

Yeah met loads of TWTDers in pubs back then. People with different views were more civil to each other back then.

Last time I was in The Swan, admittedly some years ago, it must have taken me 5 minutes to walk from the front door to the bar - every step required strenuous effort to unstick each foot from the carpet.

The toilets used to be pretty grim in there tbh. The company evidently wasn't much better.

Well thank you very much...Actually in the early 1970s the all Irish public bar was quite forbidding but the rest of us with our long hair and greatcoats in the saloon were pretty lively. Only pub I've been in where I have ended up sitting next to an archaeologist who was working on, I think, what was to become the underground car park and he said 'here, look at this' and unfolded a piece of cloth containing a centuries old skull - a bit like yours but without the blond wig.

The Vaults was right next to Mannings but slightly underground, hence the name...The Crown and Anchor was just along from Debenhams and closed down to become W H Smiths. The Cock and Pye ? The Bandbox ? The Queens Head ? Oxborrows Hotel ?

They were my era too!
Plus The General Gordon and Traceys night club - ipswich was very different then.

must have been a different pub, as Id go so far as to say even in the 90s, the area from the front door to the bar was never carpeted, and it certainly isnt now or has been for years. the little section beyond the bar with the pool table/jukebox and corridor to the toilets used to be carpet, but not the bar.

well youve got to ask who though ? aiui the pub was on a freehold lease till 2034, and so the current leaseholders have decided even on a freehold, not on tenancy with a pubco/brewery screwing them over, the numbers just dont work for them anymore.

and if it doesnt work for them, why would it be different for anyone else ?

but I havent been to the Swan & Hedgehog for nearly 2 years now, and only once to the Spread Eagle, why mention the Spread Eagle well that lease is up for sale too btw

Foiled by my failing memory. Distinctly remembered the sticky carpet but clearly filled in gaps about where exactly it was.

All pubs I frequented in my youth and with memories from all of them. Bandbox was where I met my first wife (another 2 since!) and a regular haunt in the mid 70s.
Queens head was a regular hang out before entry into the Baths Hall nightclub on the opposite corner. One of my most vivid memories was the night a gang of West ham fans stayed behind after the game and got savagely attack by a mob of Town boys who left the Queens for the Baths Hall with massive intent to confront their mob. That was probably year 70. My first ever beers were in the Mulberry Tree late 60s as a young teenager
