Looking to get a new kitchen, the consensus seems to be avoid Magnet/Wren/Wickes/Howdens and just get them to design and then use DIY as they are a quarter of the price?

Are they a quarter the quality, tho? Not used them myself, so can't answer that question. But I know what Howdens, B&Q and the like produce.

Good Lord! Whatever is it?

I have used Wickes for about six kitchens (not all mine I hasten to add) and they have been fine. I fitted a few with a mate and had a proper kitchen fitter do the one's in my own house and have been very impressed with the finish

About ten years ago I got a price for a kitchen in the Uxbridge area but got it cheaper from the same company but purchased up North. Even with a £200 delivery charge it still worked out at about £900 cheaper.

Magnet seem more expensive and I have heard bad things about Wren's customer service.

We have fitted our own kitchen twice - both from Ikea - went well, good to design with them and then fitting was really straightforward, but we were younger and more enthusiastic. Have never used DIY kitchens.

For the most recent kitchen (no 3) we used Wren, and it was a fantastic experience from design to fitting and final snagging, could not fault them. BUT it is often down to how good the fitter is, as Wren subcontract that out. We had a brilliant fitter and could not have gone more smoothly.

I too have heard some bad things about Wren's complete lack of customer service. But apparently things have improved a lot recently.

I would still go Howdens every time

Had a friend with proper building skills helping.

Took 8 days to strip out old kitchen and fit new one. House is few hundred years old and walls are all over the place that didn't help.

Looks lovely now done, but better last til I'm long gone

Same.

My brother (who fitted it) swears by Howden, and not got much positive to say about wren.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Very good quality! I had one 2 years ago, really good service, helped with the plan( measure 5 times, not twice, cut once!), but I did pay for a chippy to fit it, he came with all the gear, laser levelling, great electric saws etc, i wasn't go to buy for a one of job, worth every penny, so worth factoring into the price.

We’ve used them loads over the years, their online kitchen planner is great (and they offer a professional online kitchen planner for a small fee if needed). Really good quality and super easy to fit if you know what you’re doing. They’ve just been purchased by howdens so will be interesting to see how their prices etc go

The chap who fitted our kitchen six years ago used Benchmarx. I have to say the quality of it has been excellent. He reckoned Howdens were good too and they were his other go to suppliers.

One thing I will say - I’ve witnessed two kitchens being fitted of the years by people who know what they’re doing. I count myself as reasonably practical, but it’s not something I’d contemplate taking on.

I bought a new kitchen from Wickes around five years ago. I did get someone to fit it, but removed the old one myself including tiles flooring etc.
A round a year and a half later a neighbour sort my advice as he was having a new kitchen.
I told him to get a Wickes one. He ignored me and bought one from B&Q.
His has already had doors fall off and various problems. Mine however still works like new.

Yes, highly recommended. Good customer service. DIY manufacture and sell at the same premises but do not fit.

Yes, about 8 or 9 years ago. The kitchen units and worktops are still going strong. In my experience, make sure you buy everything as topping up orders down the line can be difficult. A light unit failed and I couldn't get a replacement. Cupboards are good and had all the sizes and colours I needed. Perhaps shop separately for peripheral fittings like strip lights that you can replace if needed.

DIY Kitchens were recently purchased by Howdens. I visited their factory showroom at the time. Not sure if DIY Kitchens will retain this facility or if it will slowly become a sub-brand of Howdens.

The irony of this post being by "LandOfMickyStockwell" as Mick Stockwell fits kitchens.

The fitter who did my bathrooms reckons Wickes are the best quality of the standard lot of suppliers, if that’s any help.

My Dad used Howdens (in Norfolk) a year ago for his new kitchen. He was very happy with price and quality. He also had an excellent fitter and project manager which makes or breaks it tbh.

My mate went with Wren (in Cambs) maybe 3-4 years ago and he was very unimpressed with their project management and customer service.

Good luck - whoever you choose in the end.

Howdens and DIY Kitchens were both recommended to us by friends who’d had them fitted. having seen both I don’t think there’s much between them.
