| VAR is so inconsistently rubbish 15:54 - Sep 20 with 1679 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | I am really and not telling anyone anything new but every game it seems to be failing. We’d have been livid if Everton’s second yesterday was called against us, I thought Cov were ridiculously fortunate as well but by the letter of the law I guess both were correct. For my high school coaching stuff, I actually done a refs course many years ago and there was an old boy (sure some will know the name on here) George White up at Whitton. He always used to say you have to ref it in the spirt of the laws. There is just no common sense anymore, if we are going to pull goals back for a slight contact boot to boot, I mean what are we doing. Even on City’s goal just then, they manage to flag it offside so there is no celebration when he was level, while they usually let it go on forever, they can’t get anything correct, at least in terms of helping the product as entertainment. I’m for technology in Football but it’s being used too extensively and micro analyzed in terms of subjective decisions, not good. [Post edited 20 Sep 15:56]

| VAR is so inconsistently rubbish on 16:41 - Sep 20 with 1498 views | Garv | I know this isn't really the point of your post but it annoys me that the buzz word is always consistency because it gives the idea any two incidents that are similar in any way should be treated with the same punishment/decisions, ignoring any nuance or as you say, common sense. Agree on the whole though, some of the decisions are just stupid. The Cov one in particular is beyond soft and completely gets the defender off the hook after a dreadful attempt at being a footballer. Everton offside also seems pretty crazy. If you went back in time 20 years and played someone some audio from a generic VAR check so they could hear the language and the things being checked, they'd think the game has gone completely mad. | |

I know what you mean, feels like yesterday they were overcompensating for the Manchester derby last week as well.

| VAR is so inconsistently rubbish on 19:30 - Sep 20 with 1316 views | Durovigutum | Football has brought this on itself. All we want is common sense. All we want is consistency. Guess what - if you referee in the spirit of the game (give what the game expects, so don’t go sending off a 12 year old for putting their hand in front of their face on the goal line that stops the ball going in but also saves their teeth) then it has to be inconsistent. A law is to be interpreted - it’s why it’s called laws of the game not rules of the game. This week I’m refereeing and my fitness level and eyesight and that I played in the late 80s and 90s means I’m going to be different than the 18 year old who looks at me odd when I say “chopper Harris”. Still love the game. | | | |
| VAR is so inconsistently rubbish on 19:51 - Sep 20 with 1274 views | armchaircritic59 | Well we were one of the 19 of 20 PL clubs that voted for it when it was put to the vote. Only Wolves had the very good sense to say no. So I guess, for good or bad, we are in no position to say much about any decision that they make in our favour or otherwise, it should simply never have been allowed to see the light of day in the first place. | | | |

I don't really understand why ITFC voted for VAR, especially as we had to pay to install it at that time. There should have at least been some consultation with fans. [Post edited 21 Sep 14:20]

From memory, it was being voted on on the proviso PGMOL were going to implement it differently Ashton said something along the lines of if we knew what we know now, our decision may have been different

I don't blame VAR, however recent changes to rules, and new rules that are ambiguous at best has not helped VAR look good. All of the recent controversy has been caused by personal interpretation of ambiguous rules and not on the spirit of the game. This has caused decisions to look like clear bias by referees and VAR officials. The offside rules and handball rules needs to go back to definitive wording and understanding. Handball:- should be ruled if the ball touches anyone's hand that causes the ball to change direction. Accidental hand ball is still hand ball and a foul should be given. Yellow and red cards are for deliberate hand ball. Therefore similar to:- accidental fouls are are given. Yellow and red cards are for deliberate fouls. . Offside:- should be ruled if any player is between the last defender and goal line. Any player in an offside position is affecting play regardless of what the stupid rule.say. That rule could not be made by anyone who played football. It is impossible to judge unless you are a mind reader, but this is where we are currently with the rule book and VAR.
| VAR is so inconsistently rubbish on 04:08 - Sep 21 with 885 views | Benters | Football was a simple game enjoyed by peasants years ago. I mentioned it on another thread that 1970s game was a joy to watch,I guess that’s how I remember it at School. Of course you always had your star players and looked forward to seeing those. But this VAR is spoiling football, does it really have to be so technical and measured ? Just go back to ‘some you get some you don’t ‘ not only that it’s spoiling the flow of the game. I’m all for goal line technology but not VAR. | |

| VAR is so inconsistently rubbish on 06:43 - Sep 21 with 808 views | OldFootball | The fundamental flaw with using cameras for subjective decisions is that's there's not enough to time review football by camera, and most of the decisions could go either way. A referee keeps a balance by assigning decisions as equal as possible between two teams. This is Impossible with VAR. It can only get worse. | | | |

"All we want is consistency." And thereby hangs the tale. All I ever wanted was consistency from the referee across the duration of a particular game. It seems to me that VAR is driven by attempting to achieve consistency across ALL games - an impossible task if you ask me given that may laws still have caveats like "if, in the opinion of the referee ...."

| VAR is so inconsistently rubbish on 15:38 - Sep 21 with 555 views | Vaughan8 | You're right. No common sense is applied anymore. The Maguire handball was an obvious one, as well as Man City's last week, and Everton's "goal" this week. Now we have the technology, it's almost used too much. The clear and obvious rules we were promised is now not the case. I've been converted to, "its not VAR that's the issue, its the people that use it." | | | |

It’s being overused and micro analyzed in freeze frames that’s the problem. There is a place for technology in football, the goal line is a no brainer and I believe offside it should still be used. Outside of that I would consider a challenge system or VAR only stepping in for serious foul play. The current product is being ruined, far too subjective and human error still happening even with the delays.

Agree with these interpretations in the main...when i did my prelim badge in mid 1990s the ref who came in to explain laws defined handball basically as any occasion anybodys hand came into contact with the ball from which they gained an advantage deliberately or not. Agree that only deliberate as deemed by the ref should earn a caution. Like the definition of offside to but for clarity just include the whole of the 6 yard box maybe
| VAR is so inconsistently rubbish on 18:37 - Sep 21 with 438 views | Swansea_Blue | It’s occasionally rubbish because we have the same people using it who were originally making the mistakes that lead to the call for it. I don’t know how you get around that. There will always be genuine mistakes and always unclear outcomes where there’s subjectivity in the laws. The ‘in the spirit of the game’ side seems particularly relevant. Once incidents have been, paused and tiny fractions of play have been slow-mowed to death, you lose the ability to take the context of that part of play. | |

| VAR is so inconsistently rubbish on 20:27 - Sep 21 with 330 views | Chrisd | Then you get the ridiculous reasoning from the PGMOL for the decisions. The rules are so clouded now, no one knows what a handball is, offside or a foul. Modern football should be in far better place especially with the advancement of technology, but incredibly we appear to be going backwards!! | |

I just dont get why laws cant be simple... in hockey ball hits foot, foul accidentally or not, its accepted and happens regularly without the fuss... just make a simple handball definition removing subjectivity. [Post edited 22 Sep 9:13]

I wish it could be like that, but what happens if you are an attacking player running into a blind alley, inside the area... what's stopping you from attempting to hit the ball into a player's hand, to take the penalty?

The reason Walton had no chance was that he moves across towards the near post because Johnson moves that way in an offside position
| VAR is so inconsistently rubbish on 07:57 - Sep 22 with 116 views | RetroBlue | "VAR" Is only more officials having an opinion on an event/ situation. You could have 10 refs /officials controlling a game ( essentially what VAR is ), and despite the rules, they all have their interpretation of what they've just seen. This is why VAR is what it is, crap. | |
