Expulsion from the PL 18:58 - Oct 1 with 4401 viewsringwoodblue

I see that if Citeh’s punishment is to be expelled from the PL, at least 15 of the other 19 clubs have to vote in favour of the motion.

Can you honestly see any club apart from Citeh themselves voting against and if so, who?

Newcastles's owners may also have been distracted by events closer to home since they bought the club. Indeed that goes for all of the sportswashing petrostates in the Middle East to some extent but the the Saudi PIF has been cutting back on spending a lot in the last year.

In deed, the Newcastle owners are frustrated that they can not buy success Man City style. When the potential for 115 charges broke 3,4 years ago, it must have stopped Newcastle ownership in it's tracks. The Saudis have certainly lost interest in golf now it cannot challenge the traditional competitions for prominence in the game.

I do not understand why all 19 clubs would not vote for this.

If we illegally added £2BN to our accounts over the course of the next 10 years (whatever the £900M adjusted for inflation) which allowed us to knock Man City of their perch, they would be the first to vote for our expulsion. Or a more real example, what if Newcastle did that .. the whole league would be up in arms.

They are the team they are today because they cheated their way to a £1BN advantage over most of the league. The only way to remove that £1BN advantage is to expel them and have the come back in at L2 level IMO.

A one year relegation will allow them to retain the advantage. Sponsors will stay, some great players will stay. Not in L2 they wont.

I think it depends on how many clubs would be worried as to whether their finances would stand up to serious scrutiny. If expulsion becomes a precedent and a club is worried that they could be next, they’ll vote against it.

Morally I think they should be expelled and hope that clubs see the bigger picture and show some balls on this

Whether we like it or not, City are now a global name and they attract tourists from around the world, much like United, Arsenal and Liverpool do.

They attract sponsors, and money and that money filters across the league, the PL did more intra-deals than ever before, keeping cash between them.

Plus, bankrupt them or whatever and there's probably hundreds of millions that won't get paid to other clubs (slight over simplifying, but you know what I mean....you don't want to put a question mark on a debtor by choice).

And this also has implications for the Championship as it will reduce the spaces from League One teams by one which i can imagine won't go down well

Of course, the PL loses a degree of interest without them, but let's not act like the PL would struggle to attract business and new business. They have nothing on Chelsea, Liverpool, United and Arsenal in terms of pull.

They are also not going bankrupt. The world's biggest PE firms would be all over this deal if it were ever even close to a sale.

Their finances already do stand up to serious scrutiny. The financial rules and more precisely the fair market value partnership rules in place today have never been stronger; hence, clubs face points deductions for going even a few million over the threshold or are forced to revalue partnerships.

The idea that another club could be operating a similar scandal is fantasy.

Adding to this, in a few years time when water is under the bridge, demotions and fines considered to be history, Man City will globally still be considered a giant club (rightly or wrongly). Look how quickly Juventus bounced back from the match-fixing scandal that saw them demoted.

Turns out building a really big line city through a desert is expensive.

And that generally doing every mega project suggested by your dictator may not be good economic policy.

incredible concept and the figures they were talking about are mind-blowing. Being able to travel in a linear fashion only rather than radiate left right in any direction you fancy, as in traditional cities would be very limiting, maybe mentally not even healthy.

but what they dont have to vote on is a 100 point penalty, applied every season for the next 10 years

or a 10 year transfer ban

From 1996 to 2002 they were in the Premier League just one season. It’s only the Arab millions that has propelled them to where they are and the PL would thrive with or without them in my view.

But I think they’ll get away with it in real terms. There’s too much riding on them being left alone and that’s before we get to financial ….’incentives’, potential threats and of course the political aspect.

You can bet your back teeth the journos are digging in to this like no tomorrow - and that’ll include no doubt the former Mayor of Manchester and other local politicians. Let’s hope it’s pure bending the rules on MCs part. Regardless I suspect it’s in most people’s interest (sadly) to sweep this under the carpet and maybe go tough on a lesser light like say a Forest or a Fulham.

Thankfully I don't think the PL will care about any of it. They could have been like Everton, like Forest etc and cooperated with the PL. They choose destruction, they choose lies, they forced the PL to spend 100M+ on lawyers.

I struggle to believe those involved wont look at the precedent and absolutely throw the book at them. This can't ever happen again because if they got of light, Newcastle and Forest will be right behind them.

Hopefully this saga brings and end to any state owned ownership and we can all put this scandal behind us.

I hope you are right, but the cynic in me doubts it. I heard what happened when the authorities went after Rangers and what was surrounding them was a flea bite compared to Man City.

The key in all this will be the political dynamic that leaves Burnham between a rock and a hard place. Given the mess this country is in, I suspect he’ll have to do what he’s told by the UAE. I don’t envy him in what’ll be his decision.

I see the UAE are now threatening the UK Government in retaliation for the guilty verdict against Man City by the Premier League. They really are sharing their true colours and believe their wealth lifts them above any rules.

Prime Minister under pressure as Gulf state warns it will withdraw investment in retaliation for Premier League row
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is warning Andy Burnham that it will pull billions of pounds of investment out of the UK in retaliation for the guilty verdict against Manchester City.
The diplomatic row represents a major test of Mr Burnham’s premiership and raises questions over why the Prime Minister praised Manchester City’s ownership in an intervention days earlier.
Mr Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, initially said he would be “really concerned” if the UAE decided to sell the football club after the club was found guilty of financial irregularities by the Premier League.

Well guy I did a job for yesterday is involved with FA, he thinks the EPL could have cocked up & City get away with it. He claims if the Independent Tribunal received any sort of payment from the EPL then technically they not independent. So correct procedure was not followed.

If any do it might suggest they have used similar tactics to increase their own budgets.

The more you read about the details of what City have done the more your mind boggles. It beggars belief. Paying the manager £1.75m for FOUR DAYS WORK and then still paying that money through City is unbelievable. Almost literally.

When these sorts of situations arise, I always wonder what on earth their auditors are doing?
They're either complicit or negligent but it never seems to be part of the picture.

Also, how does a professional CFO sign off on this and retain their accreditation?
The accountancy industry always seems to get away untarnished.

Just have to be replaced by Gary O'Neil's flying Ipswich Town.

On a more serious note, I doubt those international fans would stay away for long. They'll attach themselves to another successful team instead.

Always feel that we have so much history with MCFC, probably due to me being a young lad when battling for 2nd spot in the championship all those years back, and then sending them down.

be weird seeing them in L1/2 whilst we sit in the PL with a few quid to spend!

If they can show a faked invoice for 20 million instead of 2 million and see 20 miilion go into the bank, even if most of it was a from a different source to the invoiced entity, the auditors would be happy enough, wouldn't they? I doubt the audit company wants to dig too deep. They are being very well paid so why potentially find what you do not want to see. They probably focus more on what concerns H.M.R.C, make sure all relevant tax is paid correctly.

City could decide to bung them a few quid to vote the other way. It wouldn't be expensive if they only need to bribe 5 other clubs. I'm not certain whether it would even necessarily breach PL rules to do so, but City aren't averse to cash under the table exactly...

This just isn't going to happen.

A) Manchester City aren't going to be purchasing players for a number of seasons, so it isn't going to be disguised through inflated transfer fees or anything similar.

B) Anyone at another club caught accepting a bribe to influence a Premier League vote would be putting both themselves and their club in an extraordinarily serious position. You'd be looking at disqualification from football governance for ever and possible criminal consequences.

C) You'd also need multiple clubs to agree to it. The more people and clubs involved, the more ridiculous the idea becomes. You're relying on numerous executives being willing to risk their careers and reputations.

And then, to top it all off, Manchester City themselves would likely be breaking even more rules in the process!

Times have moved on. There is far more scrutiny, regulation and transparency around the finances of Premier League clubs than there was 20 or 30 years ago. I think if you're looking for the murkier side of football finances nowadays, it's far more likely to be around agents and intermediaries — and even that area has been subject to increasing attempts at regulation.
