Thinking of poor characters, Paul Jewell's collection of racists, old fogies, misfits, addicts and future criminals has to be the worst we have ever had it in terms of characters. We had Bowyer, Bullard, Chopra and Emanuel Thomas all on the books at the same time.
What an absolute disaster and it ended about as well as expected, with gangsters turning up at Playford Road looking for their money and the club having to pay them off.
Yeah, as much as MM should have left earlier, he was the right person to sort through and boot out that shameful group. They were a lower low than being in League 1.

Don't forget Paul 'toothache' Taylor.
Season after, but yeah, what a waste of cash he was. He looked like a League One player, because thats what we had signed.
Josh Carson was also in this squad, and he allegedly had a planet sized ego with a thimble of the ability to back it up. He did look like a prospect at one point but apparently the club were so fed up with dealing with him they loaned him away for the remainder of his contract.
What a dreadful season that was. Wiki has the results and transfers in. On the upside, we signed Aaron Cresswell for £240,000. What a terrific player he turned out to be. Well done Jewell!
On the downside, the other nine he signed. Including Ingmarrson, Chopra, Bowyer and KFCs favourite sons Bullard and Ellington. Of the six loans in, Daryl Murphy went on to be good for us and Andrews did alright, if memory serves me right but let’s face it, it was all a bit hopeless and depressing.
I was in Malta for the Saints mauling but wasn’t surprised we got battered. A few days later I was in some fishing village the day after the Peterborough game and there was a local newspaper on a cafe chair. It had the results. I saw 7-1 and thought, nah, stupid Maltese. Must be a misprint. Stupid me more like. Utter humiliation.
I was back for the Leeds win and we went on a little run. Hope! Nope, in October we went down the pan. We were just a poor team with rubbish players. Some of them hadn’t always been rubbish, but by the time they were stumbling around at PR they certainly were.
By that stage Jewell didn’t know a team from a teapot, not helped by an owner who already knew he was out of his depth and a club starting to rot inside out.
It doesn’t do to forget the tough times not least to understand what has happened in the intervening 15 years. Hats off to those who witnessed those times. How the attendances stayed as good as they were was remarkable given the dross, with a few exceptions, served up.
Edit: hats off to MM for defying with an essentially League One club for so long - even if the football was mostly ……..’agricultural’.

Ahhh … the ASBO XI … not that long after “Roy Keanes’s Ipswich” and those horror days and only few years after we’d bankrupted lifelong town supporting businesses and partners….dark days … who could have imagined it would get EVEN darker still apart from a little overlong sticking plaster respite before …. The light….I’m sure there’s a lesson for us all we can take from that…. Just depends on your outlook.

Andrews was phenomenal and reminded us what a footballer looked like. If we could have had him for a bit longer we may have finished slightly higher in mid-table obscurity.

Was it York City he (Josh Carson) was loaned to?
I vaguely remember a colleague who supported them telling me that Carson had ability but instantly gained a reputation as an entitled idiot.
He scored the winner in a game at Bristol City and looked as though he could do well.

Start the season smashing Bristol City 3-0 away from home, then immediately concede 13 goals in our next 3 games, losing 3-0 at half time to Southampton in the 5-2 home loss (the newly promoted team who would go on to complete back-to-back promotions), and a 7-1 loss to Peterborough in a game we immediately concede 4 goals in after Keith Andrews' screamer, before we lose our discipline with 2 red cards and implode even further.
Then, we look like we could beat anyone, with a late winner and clean sheet at the Boleyn.
Then, we'd go back to being crap a few weeks later, and wondering if these players even care, going 2-0 down to Barnsley, and wanting to just watch something else at half-time, before you watch them somehow blitz 5 in the second half as if they could have done it the whole season.
Then, back to being crap, before smashing 5 past West Ham at home when we were still struggling to steer clear of the relegation battle (thus successfully doing the double over them), at a time where they were top of the league on 53 points, kick-starting a surprisingly great run of form from then until the start of April... Before we went back to being crap to end the season.
Even knowing the characters of the squad, it's honestly one of the most baffling seasons of ours I can think of.

Good summary that.
People forget we did the double over West Ham and beat them 5-1. We had players like Cresswell, Murphy, Andrews, JET. People always say Chopra was terrible but he scored a respectable 14 goals. I remember a two carbon copy screamers he scored in a win at home to Brighton.
Quite an entertaining season really. I'd take that over a 2017/18.

2017/18 was such a false hope for me, the way we started that season. At least we finished above Norwich that year on goal difference.

In relation to some of what went before and after, it might have been quite entertaining, but my memory is of it being mostly cr@p with hopefully moments. That Brighton game being one of them funnily enough. The weird results against West Ham for me cannot mask the hidings by Millwall (7-1 aggregate) and various other dismal efforts.
Talented though he was, I thought Chopra was trouble. Loathed rat face Bowyer. It was clear JET was talented but had about as much application to the game as my cat. Didn’t like peevish Leadbitter, Bullard and Ellington were a joke then we had ‘jukebox’ Drury.
Basically, we under achieved based on potential talent and massively over achieved based on what the team was. We had a habit of clinging on to 15th in those days. Whoopee. Personally, I didn’t enjoy the season much.
Little did I know what was to follow until 2021 bar a few good efforts from McCarthy.
