I know there have been a few mentions on here now and then of the extent of people's hatred towards Norwich, even to the extent of not buying from Norfolk-based businesses.

Why?! What logical reason is there for such a stance?

I popped over to my local with a good book (about St Pauli) this afternoon, because the beer festival there was coming to an end, and all festival pints were £2.

A bloke and his mate clocked the book and popped over and struck up a conversation. We soon established I was an Ipswich fan, and they were Norwich fans, but we carried on, had a good laugh, talked about all sorts, bought each other drinks, and had a bloody good evening truth be told. (They're currently convinced we'll dick them, btw).

I'm sure there are folks on here that would have promptly told them where to go when they discovered they were Norwich fans (and I'm sure they have similar fans too). But why?! What reason is there (and I'm sorry, but 'they're Norwich' isn't a reason) for telling someone to f*ck off solely because of the team they support?!

Nothing wrong with rivalry - I'll happily chuck abuse at them for 180mins a season, and take the proverbial when they're not doing so well.

But why should it be anything more than that? I'm 110% sure that there are people on here that wouldn't even give a Norwich fan the time of day - and there's no sense to that whatsoever.

This is exactly the sort of abuse Phil has just had to ask people to stop.

The fact that some people on here have explicitly said they won't do business with Norfolk based companies.

I think someone even went as far to say they wouldn't take out insurance with Aviva even if they were the cheapest option.

I'm sorry, but that's just stupid.

Aviva certainly not.
A lime and lemon together in the fruit bowl? No.
Kettle crisps? No.

There's a fella at work who supports them we have a bit of banter. However if he worked in my office there would be problems.

There no logical reason for the hatred and bile that is directed to each other, I don't think there is any historical event that has taken place between the two clubs that could provide any sort of excuse. It's one of the shameful and embarrassing sides of football fans, and anyone using the word 'scum' to describe each other should be ashamed of themselves, and grow up.

A healthy rivalry can flourish in exactly the atmosphere you describe, and doesn't need the puerile abuse and violence that is accepted by tribal, conforming 'supporters'.

Conventional wisdom is the enemy of thought.

It is/should exist because its a necessary ingredient to supporting a club, makes the intensity of that support all the greater.
Most Norwich fans in person have more in common with us as football fans than the majority of people we meet *, so its not surprising that we can have decent football conversation.

If they were drawn in by a St Pauli book, it proves the point (was it Pirates, Punks and Politiks by any chance?).

*except they have 6 fingers on each hand and are married to their sisters.

For some strange reason internationally we're supposed to support our rivals in the other home nations. Of course they're all allowed to hate us though.

In the past I found the rivalry intense in Ipswich but it fell away in vehemence as you got closer to the Waveney, then stupid again as you got closer to Norwich. When the supporters mix in their daily lives then some of the daft language and behaviour becomes untenable.

What I did find weird when I lived just on the Norfolk side of the border was that everyone in the village apart from the guy who ran the shop were Town supporters but when you went a mile down the road to Brandon and were back in Suffolk you found that most of the Brandonites? Brandonii? Brandonians? supported Nodge!

It makes me smile when someone starts a '1-0.. the Scum are losing 1-0' at a game

Whether it's a London away day, a home game or up north, if Scum go 1-0 down, you can absolutely guarantee someone will start that chant.

Good. I hate them with a passion and would love to see them relegated.

A couple of years ago I needed a new fence, so based on a recommendation I plumped to get a quote off the guy mentioned. He turned up in van painted in green and yellow. No warning bells rang even though I never put these colours together in anything I do. Anyhoo he was a nice guy and gave me a good quote. He then mentioned my ITFC stickers in my man shed window and asked if him being a Norwich fan had any bearing on the deal. He said it with a smile on his face and I answered with an equally wide smile that it wouldn't. He did an excellent job and would recommend him to anyone, but obviously not some on here.

It is irrational but I hate them with a passion. Always have and always will.
Having said that, I am quite capable of being civil to scummers when I meet them out of a footballing context.
