You can’t keep people over 70 in lock down for another eighteen months. Just simply isn’t going to happen.

Many of them would do it. It would really polarise. Some would just give up completely and take their chances, others would stay in quite a damaging and terrified hibernation.

Deaths from heart attack have gone up 50% in London during lockdown. Brits are stoically dying quietly at home.

As with all of these plans & restrictions, the objective will be achieved, which is to control the spread of the virus, as long as a majority abide by the rules. The high profile minority who flout the rules attract huge attention, but as long as the majority comply, it's not actually a big problem.

It's a fine balance between physical health (not just re Covid_19, but also the usual killers - heart attacks, strokes, early investigations of cancer etc.) - and mental health, isn't it. If the period were extended that far, people will no doubt make their own choices based on their own individual circumstances.

I think we're going to have to get used to living with this new virus unfortunately. The common cold is a coronavirus, & they haven't yet found a cure or vaccine for that, most people still get one every year. Vaccines against flu' are guesswork re what strain/s will prevail that year, hence many people have annual flu jabs & still get flu'.

Sorry to sound pessimistic (and I'm usually an optimist). On the plus side, I think our previously accepted ways of life will change long-term, and that will benefit the environment/help slow climate change.

I think it is a big problem.

Firstly, eighteen months of a twentysomething's life is probably around two percent of their remaining lifespan. For someone over seventy it may be anything from all of their remaining lifespan to a very optimistic five percent.

Secondly, where those over seventies are part of a family unit, there will be a wealth of experience and practical knowledge, even childcare, that will not be utilised, not be passed on. As the West African proverb says 'When an old person dies it is like a library burning down'.

Finally, as the over seventies are the most vulnerable to Covid-19 (at least as far as the latest information suggests...) they are the ones who are most likely to be affected. It will be their own life that they are playing with for the most part, and they should be free to make their own choices. When we take out an annuity, for example, we often make a set of calculated risks regarding our own mortality. Exposure to disease is a more visceral example of this established part of modern life, we all make decisions (conscious or otherwise) every moment of the day that can affect whether we we live or die, whether we live well or just subsist. To remove those choices takes away autonomy and sets us all on a slippery slope to totalitarianism.

A mate of mine states that wait times for an ambulance in London can be several hours now because of the pandemic - which would explain thise heart attack stats.

To my mind it isn’t as simple as explained in The Times article. I am rather hoping we will adopt a smarter approach.

I would like to see it being a legal requirement to have your temperature checked before being allowed to enter any shop, pub, restaurant, theatre, sports arena or work place.

The objective has to be to stop the spread rather than just protecting those perceived to be more vulnerable. On the subject of vulnerability it is becoming clear that some ethnic minorities are more at risk than others, if it is right to impose restriction by age then it would be equally right to try and protect minority groups but that wouldn't sit well with society as a whole.

If it is wrong to discriminate on race grounds it is equally wrong to discriminate by age.

Unless I’ve misunderstood, what’s the point of having your temperature checked if you’re asymptomatic or in the incubation phase of the virus, as there would be no signs of a fever yet you could still pass it on?

Indeed... so if this is correct, then having not only not been able to go out for a big family meal to celebrate my dad's 80th birthday a couple of weeks ago, it is quite conceivable that I could’ve potentially already had the last opportunity to even give him a hug, if I have to maintain social distancing and not have time together for another 18 months... my parents may not get to spend the time they’ve always enjoyed having Yasmin for sleepovers, and enjoying playing with their granddaughter again, if in 18 months they’re still with us, but physically unable to do all that any more...

It’s a sad thought, if that is what their lives have come to be able to enjoy in their later years.

You to need to ensure that those who show symptoms obey the rules. You can’t stamp it out unless you apply a total 100% lockdown but you should be doing all you can to reduce the risk. Relying on trust doesn’t work.

I think you have misinterpreted my point, which was that it doesn't actually matter much if a minority break the rules, purely in terms of controlling the spread of the virus.
Yes, telling those 70+ that they are going to be locked down for another year or 18 months is akin to a life sentence to many. That's one of the reasons why a careful release from lock-down is a priority. It also is highly relevant that the government & many businesses will run out of money if the lockdown persists for much longer.

The grandparent / grandchild link can be very strong and works both ways.

Sent a photo couple of evenings ago of granddaughter asleep with a photo of granny laying on her pillow. Three years ago when granny was in hospital, for over three Months, the youngster was having difficulty understanding . Gave her a small photo frame, the sort you get in a semi decent cracker, and half a dozen photos of granny. She used to go to sleep clutching them in her hands.

Hadn’t done since Granny cane home from hospital 30+ months ago. Separation is hard and it impacts on both generations.

They're called "balcón nazis" in Spain. Was having a chat to a mate of mine in Bilbao and said a neighbour had posted photos on a local Facebook group of his daughters walking together in the street near his flat - they were on a parental visit as his kids live with his ex. It's one of the few things around movement that are allowed - naturally he was very upset.
