A nice little reduction of 90%. England would have reported deaths in the teens and 20s all week. 152 for the week, instead of 995”.

I know we don't usually have the weather here, but I'm finding it bizarre that 'staycations' aren't being pushed more for July/August. You want to go on holiday? Sure, but stay in the UK and help support the hospitality industry here...assuming we'll be allowed to open.

Surely we should be encouraging people to holiday in the U.K. and boost the economy?

As you and BD say, surely now if the perfect time to stay in the UK and not focusing on whether we can immediately business as usual. My partner and I are looking to go to Suffolk during August. We had a holiday planned to go to Italy in March but that obviously got scrapped. Hasn't even entered my mind to try and re-book that until this is "over".

Had he forgotten that they'd need to quarantine for 2 weeks on arrival? Assuming they can find a UK-bound flight!

Was planning to have friends and family visit us who live nearby, so I guess if make them sit in the garden or something that can happen too.....

Agree on staycations. I think many people are planning on doing that judging by the run on things like inflatable hot tubs.

During a global pandemic when we have some of the worst figures in the world? No thanks - people can stay at home rather than move around the UK. Those of us in the beauty spots don't have the NHS and services capacity to deal with people importing the disease.

They don’t want people travelling anywhere in the UK right now and spreading the virus to communities that might not have the required health facilities. There are a lot of people, mostly travel bloggers too, who are obsessed with going overseas and forget the consequences. Luckily our FCO advice will stop most

good article and good points, however our government are doing similar sleights of hand, ons report our deaths at 50,000 rather than 40,000, and excess deaths are well over 60,000. however it's spun, the fact still remains that we're a lot worse than any other european country (with the possible exception of sweden) whereas our geography should give us major advantages over the likes of germany etc etc.

It does show the need to not take headlines at face value, but rather dig a little bit deeper to really understand what's going on (applies to everything).

Indeed. See the mindless bunch of 'tourists' who hit Durdle Door here in Dorset at the weekend? 4 lads jumped from the top of the arch, 60/70m.....resulted in 2 Helicopters having to attend and get them to hospital. I think 1 has died, another paralysed. The beach was jammed full of people cheering them on. Litter and rubbish left everywhere. Coastguards given stick, horrendous. Some female had driven down from Dagenham, she moaned that it was 'too busy' in an interview. Go figure. Dorset had the lowest R rate in the UK, now it's right up there, due to to incidents like this. Frankly, people can leave Dorset well alone, no one wants them here. The decision to let people drive 'anywhere' in England was mental. It's almost as if there is an ulterior motive. Cap it at 20/30 mins drive.

Horrendous that was. We're notionally capped at 5 miles drive here, but that seems to be slipping. Anyone spotted having driven miles across the country though is being turned round by the police with a warning. If their number plate gets picked up again in the area they get fined.

I know Durdle Door really well and was amazed to see the beach crowded. I’ve been there in the middle of July and been one of a handful of families in the beach. Usually loads of sightseers and walkers but never seen the beach busy. What was Weymouth like in the same day?

Sorry to hear that the R rate has gone up in Dorset, looks like it will be going up in London too.
