I like Farage. He’s a very useful barometer as you know that whatever he says or does is the wrong thing to do.

There are a disturbing number of politicians, pundits and penises who are looking to a Culture War as the next step in their careers. And to a man or woman they have little to no actual case.

I suppose it is the endgame for what has come to pass for mainstream political and social debate in the UK. Serious politicians and parties need to be steering well clear of it, but I’m guessing they won’t.

A small note though: It doesn’t help that the author engages in his own culture war: “Farage has, presumably, held these golf club bore opinions about cyclists for many years.” While I accept that this may well be a reasonably accurate generalisation of golf clubs in the South East, that’s harsh on the vast majority of golfers in the regions. They’re more likely to bore on about their 4 iron into the 15th green than spout right-wing populism.

It's an easy way of keeping themselves in the public eye and making a bit of money from clickbait media appearances and newspaper columns.

I thought that. As a passionate cyclist now and a golfer in my youth, I thought it was all a bit unnecessary.

I've ridden over 5,000k on my bike this year and it is mostly fine. A couple of times a month someone will overtake on a blind corner of beep at you for not cycling in the drains but in reality the majority of drivers are patient and wait to overtake safely. The key I think is avoiding A roads and generally busier areas.

The majority of incidents I've seen have been low speed commuting in Cambridge. Either people on bikes with headphones and no helmet, going very fast or vans reversing or opening doors without looking.

I always try to signal to drivers behind when I can see it's safe to pass or to hold them if something is coming they can't see. Some drivers see the latter as me giving an opinion and get frustrated but in reality I'm saying don't pass or someone might get seriously hurt.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

A popular misunderstanding seems to be around riding two abreast - have been shouted at several times by drivers who think it is illegal and dangerous.

I'm a bit conflicted on this one. I feel more vulnerable if I'm riding abreast and will pretty much always look to single out. I don't think it is always easier for motorists to get past; there are plenty of occasions where it's possible to pass a single cyclist leaving room, but you couldn't get passed two leaving the same room.

Although I see the case that's presented, it would need a significant culture shift in drivers' minds before it became widely acceptable. And maybe that's where we should aspire to get to. As it is, it just seems to wind drivers up and make them angry, which I'm not comfortable with when they're wrapped in 1.5 tonnes of metal.

As both a cyclist and a driver I never signal that it is safe to pass, nor do I go past unless I can see for myself it is clear. If the cyclist get it wrong or the motorist misinterprets the signal it could be calamitous for both parties.

Best to stick with the highways code and not overtake unless you are sure it is safe to do so.

If I am holding traffic up when on my bike I just find the first safe place to pull in a bit, a gateway or somewhere and let them go. Safer for everyone and driver's seem to appreciate it for the most part (except for the occasional one who is too impatient to wait a few seconds)

That's exactly how I am. Last para is just based on consideration isn't it. If everyone thinks and is a bit more considerate, that would do wonders to make the roads safer.

Thats all opportunist bollox for sure, but where he may have aimed a better point would be about the "mini-holland" measures go around London, at least.

It's getting ridiculous now, with so many roads shut that you sometimes have to drive 4 times the distance of the actual journey, round in circles of one way systems and blocked roads. And all those closures leave the traffic only able to go on main roads or chosen unlucky smaller roads, where lets face it, poorer people tend to live. But they can choke in traffic jam fumes, as long as the middle classes in the nicer quieter streets are ok.

The other day, down Old street, they'd shut two exists off the roundabout, so combined with newly closed side roads, I was literally stuck driving in circles! The only way to escape was to pull a totally illegal u-turn.

I probably sound like Farage now, but sod it - this isn;t right.

I’ve never really given it much thought before but now I think we should ban all cars and make the M25 the world’s biggest cycle lane.

Yep, whatever the argument, I will always be on the opposite side to this pound shop Oswald Moseley.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I don't disagree but I just ride in a style I think will minimise the risk to all. It sounds like I cycle quieter roads than you but from hundreds of hours in the saddle, some drivers are literally just loons. To be fair though I've seen my fair share of loons descending hills at 45mph+ on a bike too.

A pet peeve of mine is when motorists aggressively overtake me 100 yards before a junction to then have to immediately slam on their brakes to stop in time for said junction.

I think that some of his ideas have merit

making it unlawful for men to drive without wearing a pair of leather gloves

required use if the word 'squire' instead of mate, mush, pal etc

Camp coffee to be served on British Rail, and in pubs

Postmen to wear a shirt and tie with a peak cap

Boys to be allowed to smoke a pipe at age 14

I'm not looking too good in mine these days . Embarrassingly, I'm getting to the point where my race bike is a bit uncomfortable and I'm happier on something a bit more sit up and beg. Nothing 3 months of non-stop exercise, no beer and fasting won't fix though!

Last 3 days we've had lovely sunny days in Suffolk so managed to get out, but on the MTB. Just too many leaves, wet patches, gravel for the road bike I reckon.

Managed to shift/dislodge my seat today which meant 10 miles home with a wobbly seat before I sorted it.
