‘The Dig’ - thoughts on film and location 10:15 - Feb 1 with 2692 viewsunstableblue

Being a Deben sailor and finding the area north of Woodbridge/Bawdsey up to Orford one of my favourite parts of the world. And a frequent visitor to Sutton Hoo, was interested in watching the Netflix film.

I enjoyed but it could have been so much better. There were some great landscapes, good to see the Ramsholt round tower church and some the stretches after the Rocks.

But the story is better and some of the issues more interesting than they made of them. And why you need to go on the Butley foot ferry when cycling from Diss is beyond me!?! But it did look nice.

Still recommend, and Fiennes does a pretty good Suffolk accent.

With regard the plane scene- did you know an American bomber did ditch in the river in WW2 at Ramsholt:

What was impressive though was the young lad's cycle ride!

That's probably a ride I'd think twice about even with modern equipment!

As you say Fiennes did a good job with the Suffolk accent and style and speed of delivery. Difficult to find scenes that look still 1939 even in sleepy old Suffolk.

But it was a nice film unlike so much other squit on TV

I enjoy it and the accent must have been good cos I got told off afterwards cos I dropped back into my Suffolk drawl

I thought the modern shots of Diss looked much like 1930's Diss tho

Also bear in mind that Basil lived, to quote the film, 'in a village just outside Diss'.

Or Rickinghall to be more precise. Another fourteen miles to ride when you get to Diss. And 2.5 hours or thereabout from Sutton Hoo, according to Google Maps.

I don't think Diss is aware yet of 1830, never mind 1930.

Thought it was really good. Accent was excellent.

I think the whole Diss thing was to show the distance Brown lived from the site (think he lived in Rickinghall?)

Good to see Ramsholt Church. The walk from The Arms up the hill is one of our favourites. There was a church up there in Saxon times and the tower was then built as a lookout for pesky vikings. Nice touch I thought.

It's only 30 miles from Sutton Hoo, you'd probably head Debenham to Eye or Finningham instead, thats not a distance or route that would trouble most cyclists, even a kid in the 30's wouldn't baulk at that as a ride distance.

But it's a film it's part fiction, they introduce bits like this to add drama to the events, not be wholly accurate, or film in the right exact locations, its about the look on film as a visual representation of the story & characters.

You got married there - Superb! literally one of my favourite spots in the world! that and Shingle Street.

You know the old boy who manages the moorings at Ramsholt is a big Town fan - his beached boat was burnt down, now sits in a caravan as his office. Sat with him listening to a town game once, waiting for some weather to go through before getting back to the boat.

According to most sources, Fiennes was actually born in Ipswich in 1962, though I doubt if he actually grew up with an accent like my grandfather. His attempt was pretty good though, and there were a few local expressions in the script that added authenticity; 'tagither' is one that springs to mind.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

Indeed.

Margaret Guido (Margaret 'Peggy' Piggott) had an interesting life...

After her divorce, she was with Mr Guido, who had a psychotic breakdown, and then disappeared back to Sicily. After that she was with Lawrence of Arabia's younger brother.

His father farmed near Blythburgh, a tenant of the Earl of Stradbroke.

A friend of mine tracked down secured the first interview with Keith, the Aussie who inherited the title back in the eighties. I think this rather annoyed some of the Stradbroke family, who hoped the Aussie wouldn't get to hear about his title. I mean, an Earl called Keith!

I know when my grandad was a teenager (in the late-30s) he used to regularly cycle distances across Suffolk that seem a long way for those of us raised with cars. Not sure about 25 miles but certainly half of that.

Plus may have been a bit of hitch hiking along the way, even those of my Dad's age (60ish) would regularly hitch hike to get places like the beach on a sunny day

Actually, now you say that I recall my dad recalling stories of lengthy cycle rides in a similar era, although in Essex
