In March 2020 we were told (Coronavirus) 14:23 - Feb 2 with 4206 viewsMercian

If we let it spread unhindered we would be looking at a 125,000 deaths, if we act now it will stand between 20-30,000.
Today we stand at 107,000 and will almost surely have more than 125,000 before this is over.
We were also told the restrictions would last for 12 weeks before we can transition back to normality. 11 months later we still have no sign of that happening. We have been lied to over and over again.

It's almost like this whole thing has been managed atrociously by far right thickos with more interest in feathering the nests of their incompetent mates rather than protecting the elderly and vulnerable of this country.

This is what happens when people elect a government based on funny hair, hatred of the poor, distrust of other nations and good old fashioned selfishness.

If you don't like it, remember, don't vote Conservative. Not even once.

Look at who we have in charge.

It was very predictable.

This is the result of voting for 'joke' candidates. You get 'joke' leaders, and 'joke' responses to crises.

Initial studies showed deaths far higher than 125,000 if left unchecked and the deaths with restrictions were based around the knowledge at the time which was not really right with regards to transmission vectors and couldn't account for the new variant which has shifted things hugely over the last 2 months. There have also clearly been issues around the management of the response by the government.

I'm not really sure what your point is to be honest. How many would have died without restrictions? Are you mad about the restrictions or mad that the science changes over time as more is known?

Do you just think they should have lifted restrictions after those 12 weeks and let everything run riot?

Can you clarify your point?

Apart from all the people who did of course. He's ignored or prevaricated over advice every step of the way. He's still doing it (news leaders today were about him not acting on Sage warnings about the SA variant).

The UK's not alone in managing this thing badly, but we've been one of the worse. Thankfully the vaccine response has gone well so far; it's a rare moment of success. And even that they can't be mature about, crowing about being world leaders (when we're strictly behind countries like Israel and some of the Middle East in rates of vaccinations).

I thought there was a scientist in April 2020 who said that deaths from covid could be expected to reach 500,000 in a population similar to ours with a high density. He was accused of scaremongering I think because it was based on doing nothing to minimise the spread. Could be wrong but I am sure that has stuck in my memory bank.

Even now they refuse to act. They were told to enforce quarantine for anyone entering the country. They didn't bother. Now the SA variant is here.

Just how f##king many times do they need to get it wrong? Gross incompetence across the board. When some of these SAGE guys leave the group or retire etc, they will no doubt have some incredible stories to tell. The government have so many questions to answer. I understand this kind of thing hasn't happened before in our lifetime (at least to this level) but there have been multiple cases of them being clearly warned in advance of bad things happening and then they've ignored it. Then guess what? The bad things happen.

I have no idea how Labour, as uninspiring as they are, don't have a ten point lead in the polls. It's bad when people act according to what they think is best and get it wrong. It's far worse then they are warned and choose to ignore it and get it wrong. The very group formed to give advice in situations like this were ignored. F##k the Tories. The public should be furious with how they've handled this pandemic.

Truly impaired.

I take offence to that. We have been treated like children since day 1. Why did they offer the carrot if there was no hope of us receiving it?

There are an awful lot of blinkered, selfish, thick British voters.

It wasn't a carrot and stick situation.

You weren't being offered a carrot. You were being told that carnage was coming without action.

Not driving your car into a brick wall isn't being offered a carrot.

The issue is that they find lying so easy that they forgot to stop. The other issue is that so many people still seem to have faith in them.

For me the issue is 2 fold, 1) we're governed by inept fools that haven't done a good enough job at managing this situations, but 2) why on earth they ever stood up in March, with so much uncertainty and attempted to put numbers on this thing I'll never know.

25,000 as you say would be <1/4 of the damage we've seen, or <400 deaths per 1m of the population. There isn't a comparable country in Europe with numbers anything like that low.

That's not what happened though, you are being revisionist.

I've already pointed out that your 125,000 number is incorrect and then myself and others have pointed out how things have changed over 11 months both with regards to the virus and the government response.

You've still not said what your actual point is. What are you upset about specifically? Nobody offered you a carrot, this wasn't a choice with a reward, it's a horrible thing that has happened.
