In March 2020 we were told (Coronavirus) 14:23 - Feb 2 with 4204 viewsMercian

If we let it spread unhindered we would be looking at a 125,000 deaths, if we act now it will stand between 20-30,000.
Today we stand at 107,000 and will almost surely have more than 125,000 before this is over.
We were also told the restrictions would last for 12 weeks before we can transition back to normality. 11 months later we still have no sign of that happening. We have been lied to over and over again.

For me the issue is 2 fold, 1) we're governed by inept fools that haven't done a good enough job at managing this situations, but 2) why on earth they ever stood up in March, with so much uncertainty and attempted to put numbers on this thing I'll never know.

25,000 as you say would be <1/4 of the damage we've seen, or <400 deaths per 1m of the population. There isn't a comparable country in Europe with numbers anything like that low.

Because they bluster and lie as easily as breathing?

We have a racist homophobic PM with a well established track record of lying, a man who is completely ok with assaulting journalists who get on the wrong side of him.

Basically, he's an appalling human being who, in any sane society, would be allowed nowhere near any position of power.

But, luckily for him, he's British elite, and that means tumbling out of the right vagina puts you on the path to power over others regardless of your character or abilities.

What would you have them say? You think they have the power of foresight? Its easy looking back and criticising. They got a lot wrong, sure, but none of us knew what was coming.

We had a fair idea, from both China and Italy.

We had a 3-6 week lead on the continent and did NOTHING.
We had an opportunity to protect healthcare staff and instead, they downgraded PPE recommendations - hundreds have died, simply doing their job.
They were told 'test, test, test' and didn't. Instead, they discharged thousands of our most vulnerable into care homes to facilitate a massacre of the vulnerable.
We had an opportunity to purchase a functional, proven track and trace system from overseas and instead spent many times more than it would have cost bunging money as posh incompetents.
The experts all predicted massive rises in infections if we just willy-nilly repopened school and universities. They ignored it.

It wasn't a carrot and stick situation.

You weren't being offered a carrot. You were being told that carnage was coming without action.

Not driving your car into a brick wall isn't being offered a carrot.

The issue is that they find lying so easy that they forgot to stop. The other issue is that so many people still seem to have faith in them.

Full stadiums by the 2020/21 season. Book your holidays for the summer. If your good compliant boys this will happen, sounds like a carrot(s) to me. I have been a good compliant boy and going on holiday is not on the agenda. Only yesterday Boris said he hopes we can holiday this summer whilst medical professionals who we as a whole don't listen to as they are not our "leaders" warn that such a scenario would be unlikely. He is doing it all again.

I thought there was a scientist in April 2020 who said that deaths from covid could be expected to reach 500,000 in a population similar to ours with a high density. He was accused of scaremongering I think because it was based on doing nothing to minimise the spread. Could be wrong but I am sure that has stuck in my memory bank.

A Sage estimate put possible death toll at 250-000 to 500,000 depending on the nature of our response.

There's a decent critique of our response here, which mentions this Sage modelling by Ferguson. https://www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/magazine/covid-19-the-unofficial-uk-inquiry-c

It's a catalogue of missteps the whole way. Dr Mike Ryan, a WHO exec director with experience of the ebola outbreak warned people back in March last year about the need to be highly proactive and move quickly. We haven't heeded his advice.

"Be fast, have no regrets. You must be the first mover. The virus will always get you if you don’t move quickly. If you need to be right before you move, you will never win. Speed trumps perfection. And the problem we have with society at the moment is everyone is afraid of making a mistake. Everyone is afraid of the consequence of error. But the greatest error is not to move. The greatest error is to be paralyzed by the fear of error".

What is your point?

We already know he's an incompetent liar surrounded by equally incompetent snakes. Lockdowns work - if they are carried out well, if people are told hard truths, if those at the top embody what is being asked of everyone else. In otherwise, the opposite of the Conservative response.

You're still alive. That's as much carrot as anyone is getting, and a damn sight more than 100,000 people have received. You're alive despite the Conservatives, not because of them.

Not really sure what your point is here tbh. I don’t remember the 125k number (as others have pointed out I recall higher estimates) but if that was quoted the only thing that the current position shows is that those estimates were drastically wrong

So the figure would have been a lot higher than 125,000 had we done nothing.

We've not managed it well and we are now at over 100,000 but this thing is a moving, ever changing beast.

Whilst I think this Government have not handled it well by the same token, they have had to make difficult decisions that I, for one, would not like to have to make.

At the risk of being negative, what if Covid mutates again and the current vaccines become ineffective and we find ourselves back at square one? Yes, the Gov had said they would like to be back to normal by X but given the nature of this pandemic and their decision making, it's not possible, always.

Oddly, they seem to have managed to get their arses in gear for the vaccine roll out though.

I still don't understand your point.

If they had told you 107,000 would have died even with restrictions would it have made and difference? Surely you would have still obeyed the restrictions and "gone to bed on time"?

If they said that you might not be able to go on holiday in summer 2021 would you have acted differently?

The posts just seem like a strop because things aren't back to normal and you can't go on holiday. You're not alone, nobody else can go on holiday and many had to cancel trips which were important.
