He's trying to stay in or around yorkshire, not sure he'd come down to Suffolk.

I'd happily have him here!!!
I'd happily have anyone tbh...

"Anyone" is the word. You'd be hard pressed to come up with a coach anywhere in the football league doing a worse job.

Lives near Hull, I was talking to him about my time there when I interviewed him about the Southend game at the start of the pandemic.

He loved talking about it, really fond memories of that goal and his time here overall.

Southend United were meant to be the visitors to Portman Road on Saturday, which coincidentally is the 28th anniversary of the Blues’ 2-1 victory over the Shrimpers at Roots Hall in which Neil Thompson scored a brilliant and hugely important last-gasp winner as Town continued their pursuit of the Second Division title. TWTD spoke to the former left-back to hear how he remembers that day, that season and his time at Portman Road. 17

Whilst obviously a great season and I watched the subsequent video many times later, being at university in Sunderland I only got to see 5 games and we didn't win any of them.

In fact the highlight of my 'live' Town following season was, after persuading a Mackem what a good idea it would be for him to drive down to Suffolk on a Tuesday evening in November for the Sunderland game (we lost 0-1), listening to the news breaking of Maxwell falling off his boat..

And of course, the full name of the aquatic netminder was Billy Thompson....

As for our own hero, yes that goal against Southend, and yes, that goal at Carrow Road the first Premier League Christmas (Fireworks going off at the end, Slade playing, Mr Swallow onto the pitch giving Jason a hat etc etc etc), but the one that sticks in my mind is his last one for us in a rollicking match at Portman Road in November 1995 against Portsmouth.

Milton puts us into the lead, Pompey score twice, and then Marshall makes it 2-2 before half time. And then my memory seems to think that this happened deep into injury time, but I can't find the goal times anywhere to confirm or deny this. We get a free kick just outside the Churchmans end area, and Thompson shapes up to take it.

I'm watching this fairly near the front of the North Stand, and so the perspective is a bit off for me, but I have never ever before or since been more convinced that a Town player will score. Even Reuser going through on his own at Wembley gave me doubts, but this one, guaranteed.

And I was right.
