Looks like an economic win-win. Especially as we would not be starting from scratch.

But somebody will be along in a minute to moan I am sure.

Have you factored in the huge amount of bribes we'll have to chuck at FIFA?

Although in fairness now we're a corrupt banana republic we are probably a better fit than we used to be for what FIFA seems to look for from a host nation.

Theres definately sense to having the Europeans totally here. Not that fans would get in I suppose, or not many.

*UEFA.

I think it's a bit of a populist move too, but I'd be happy to have the tournament over here (as long as we don't open borders to fans yet) and makes more practical sense than everyone travelling across Europe for it.

It's a drop in the ocean.

And besides, we've been told for five years that the economy doesn't really matter and that it'll all be worth it. So for once I'm on side and waiting for this economic miracle to occur.

FIFA don’t run the Euros.

Edit. Ignore that. I thought this was about the offer to host all of this year’s EURO matches.

As well as a healthy injection of a feel good factor. Which the country desperately needs.

See also Euro 96 and the Olympics in 2012.

Wonder if there’s a thought that things like this might help protect the ever at risk union? To be fair, the U.K. does need a big PR job post Brexit, the benefit is almost unquantifiable if done well. Look at the 2012 Olympics and how that painted a picture of an inclusive London.

I would love to see the 2030 World Cup here. We are due one to be fair, after the shady goings on that got it to Russia and Qatar.

I can't see what there is to complain about potentially hosting a WC, would be fantastic for the country. Bribes? - unfortunately there is still a stink over the members of FIFA. We were certainly very generous in our last bid although not as generous as Qatar obviously.

Presumably we'll be pipped to the post by Saudi Arabia promising to build 30 air conditioned stadiums from scratch with slave labour.

Kwasi Kwarteng said this morning that they need to grow their way out of Covid. Which seems sensible and would be a welcome u-turn on austerity if it happens.

So probably not the best time to leave our largest and closest market.

Indeed. But as the Tories march on with their freeports plan, then it's much more likely that we'll become a tax haven and open ourselves up to even more corporate exploitation than we already have. Joined-up thinking it ain't.

That's irrelevant isn't it. They've decided they may be forced to stimulate the economy to grow our way out of a slump. And that will be harder than it would have been before. There is no scenario in which leaving your largest and closest market is a help to growing the economy.

Balls. At least we can wave flags at a few events (not that hosting the WC would be a bad thing of course, it would be awesome. But it would be papering over cracks in terms of an argument around boosting the economy).
