Interesting line from the Cook presser 16:41 - Mar 20 with 3458 viewsCheltenham_Blue

"Unfortunately at the minute we're just in that little position as a group of people where everyone is waiting for someone else to do it."

Noticed that over and over again today, when there were loose balls that two or more town players could have gone for they all seemed to be waiting for each other to go for it.

"After you, no after you"

Invariably a Portsmouth player nipped in for it.

It's not just that either, too often when our players are on the ball they take the easy option of either laying it backwards or sideways or lumping it long. Nobody looks to make anything happen. It's all so passive.

It was interesting hearing Cook during the match, constantly urging players forward, "Gwion don't turn back", "Toto/Dobs/Benno push up", "Benno Sprint!". Everything was about getting into their half and attacking. It'll take a while for this to work, after all they've spent the last couple of years just faffing around.

The players individually and collective have no balls, courage , passion ( call it what you will), to take responsibility in a game. Time and again we roll over to quite mediocre opponents. This squad doesn’t have it in them to do anything more than it’s currently doing.

Bring on the summer, and rip it all up . Start again.

Play offs? Promotion? Don’t make me laugh. This shower of shyte couldn’t fight its way out of a wet paper bag.

Whilst it was nice hearing PC

It also shows the complete lack of football understanding the players have, that they need to be constantly 'coached' during a football match

One bit with Judge in the second half summed it up for me.

We'd worked the ball to him on the left, well into their half, with a good 10 yards of space in front of him, and rather than push forward he checked back and the ball ended up with Toto/Wilson.

I know some like Judge and what he brings to the team, but as a number 10 he just doesn't do anywhere near enough. He doesn't get near the forward, he doesn't drive forward with the ball, he doesn't really create much. So often he's either doing what you say and checking back and passing it backwards or he's dropping really deep to get on the ball but then doing very little with it.

I guess that's the easy osey approach of players who get incredibly well paid and don't have a great deal to do. After all with 53 players you only have a 1 in 3 chance of making the matchday squad but you still pick up a fat wedge at the end of each month.

They certainly wont if people get on their backs straight away...

It takes time. several years of a particular coaching, safety first, move it sideways and so on. Will take time to shift habits, patterns as well as psychology.

This is what people really need to understand

Some of these players have been here a while and effectively been groomed into a certain way of life at ITFC, it's not something that's just going to change because a different manager has come in

+1 for "easy osey", words which only Mick Mills, and no-one else ever, has said.

Personally, I think it shows what has been coached into them for the past couple of years - hold onto possession, pass it back, let the defenders pass it among themselves. I was sick of how many times we'd pass to the centre backs from the opposition's half when Lambert was in charge. Cook is having to turn years of that negative mindset around so it's no wonder he's barking out instructions constantly.

Can’t disagree with you, I think Andre is a class footballer when we are on the front foot but at this time he is not what we need to get out of this league.

I would have said ‘Benno’ then ‘Judgey’, then Andre across the whole game.
Bennetts to push higher and press more.
Judge to stay left.
Andre to get tighter out of possession and find space when we have the ball.

On that basis, Cook managed it in a day without even picking the team. Back to reality, Portsmouth were there about this and last season. We are a shambles, finished mid table League One last year and probably will this.

Cook is going to need to and will change a lot of things. He is barely taken a step yet. It’ll take time.
