The statement signing we might just pull off? 22:48 - Jun 3 with 3175 viewsSTYG

Who would you target as the owners to make the biggest statement you could whilst keeping at least partly in the real world?

For me it would be someone like Daryl Dike. He’s 21 and scored 9 in 19 for Barnsley. But on loan from Orlando City.

We aren’t going to attract Premier League players or top (permanent) Championship players, which he looks to be. But given that he’s at Orlando, a fee would likely be within our reach and his current wage wouldn’t be impossible to match for us even with the financial limitations if he was the big signing.

He’s the absolute upper limit of who you could sell the dream to. That he could be a star here, help us into the Premier League. We are a bigger club than Barnsley or Orlando, he’d fit Cooks system and it would raise eyebrows.

In so many respects he would be within our reach at our most ambitious. If we were interested in Defoe you’d imagine this one just about could happen if you could really sell the club to him given the US wage structure and that he may well see his future in England. I’m sure bigger clubs would be interested and we will be more reliant on the scouting system and data analysis finding us the 20 year old Dyke that hasn’t yet done the business but you got to dream big!

Who would you go for?

I’d imagine he’ll have much better offers to consider than us. Be nice though if it did happen

I think the point of the big marquee signing is that they are a household name who has achieved a lot in the game already. What you are suggesting sounds rather like a Gio-type signing and sounds exciting in its own way. I am not sure we would be able to attract any player in either bracket away from a Championship contract, though.

Didn't they manage to get Drogba to invest in the club as well as play for them? That would be more the route I would expect them to go down. A rich superstar whose playing level is likely the Championship at the tail end of their career. I am not sure I can think of anyone who fits the bill but I am sure they will have investigated any possible options.

Wouldn't mind Lawrence Shankland as a striker who has been tearing it up in the Scottish League and already has over 100 career goals at the age of 25.

Watched him in the play offs. He’s a big lad and put himself about a bit, but not the best player I’ve ever seen, if I’m honest. Still he’s young, that’s only one game and the commentators were pretty complimentary about him.

Aged 33 and now at Havant and Waterlooville. Not too sure he would be that big a statement.

I thought about this and then did some reading that Barnsley didn't pay the fee as it was something like $20m. Guess they would have if they got promoted.

Hence him being linked with WBA.

I think it's the right idea though, just need to find the next Daryl Dike.

I think we might go for 2 or 3 statement signings rather than 1. And by that I mean a few players that arent a defo or a Drogba big name one but 2 or 3 solid additions you wouldnt expect us to get.. burns for example appears to have turned down a move to come here.. I reckon itll be something similar.

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

Lyle Taylor. Linked with a transfer after not being a regular at Nottingham Forest, was extremely clinical at Charlton, prior to his move.

He will definitely have Championship interest, but it would be a statement of intent to try and get him here to reignite his career.

He’d be a great signing, but I wouldn’t call him a marquee signing of one which would raise eyebrows outside of league one!

If we’re being slightly more ambitious but realistic, how about Hal Robson Kanu? Reminds me a bit of when we had Walters very briefly a few seasons ago.

Connor Wickham again would be quite a statement on a free. Old man Phil Jagielka and Jack Roswell have both just been released by Sheff Utd.

All four of them will be on a fortune from previous contracts, but none of them have played much regular football the last few years so could be tempted by some guaranteed minutes? (If fit.....)

I asked around about him and was told he's not the keeper PC wants. Not sure who is though.

Sensible money is surely in Stiergist being a target.

Frankie Fielding was at Bristol City with Ashton for a number of years and has just been released from Milwall? Surely we’ll take a look. 33 though so not one for years to come....

Probably, although I was under the impression it was less in question that Stiergist seems to be. That said, we will be after two keepers as PC doesn't rate either of the current ones.

Not sure he's alone there!

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

This is one I wouldn’t be surprised by.

Jeffers will know him. Everton tend to hang on to these players until they are 40
- see Garbutt.

Wonder if he’s the type we might put a sizeable bid in for. Can he play as a 1 though? Was great alongside Yates but wonder if he can play up top or across the three. Very promising player nonetheless - one I’d consider on loan if needed and I’m hoping we keep those to a minimum if at all.

Mark Travers from Bournemouth would be at the top of my list, no idea if he’d step down; but has been number 2 behind Begovic for a while now.
