I saw this story a few days ago and didn't really know what to make of it. Oli London, a white British YouTuber, is a massive fan of Korean pop sensations, BTS. Oli has decided that they identify as a non-binary Korean and has had 18 plastic surgeries to make themselves look like their favourite member of the band, Jimin.
Oli has previously been a guest on the American talk show, Dr. Phil talking about how they don't identify as British, and not only do they identify as Korean, but they also identify as Jimin specifically.
Oli took to Twitter just over a week ago to come out as a non-binary Korean. Some people were very offended by Oli's actions. On the other hand, a lot of conservative commentators including Ben Shapiro and GB News used this as a way to argue the hypocrisy of the 'woke liberals' who have no problem with those who transition genders, yet have voiced criticism of someone who transitions their race or ethnicity.
It is an interesting situation which seems to be being used as a stick for conservatives and liberals to beat each other with on social media. Without wishing to sound judgemental, I do feel concerned for Oli's mental well-being as it feels like a cry for help. On the flip-side, I can well imagine that is exactly the sort of stigma that someone who transitions genders has to suffer. I suppose that as long as Oli's actions are their own, and they don't harm anybody else, they don't really matter, but I wanted to see if anyone on here had any thoughts on the matter.

I believe Oli is 31. When I was looking into this I found a video where they state that this has been something they have been thinking about for 8 years, which ties in to when BTS were first formed in 2013. | |

Is it that obvious? 
I think because we associate the idea of transitioning so closely with gender identity, it makes it a really difficult one to unpack. I genuinely couldn't imagine feeling any other gender than the one I was born, but yet I like many others who are the same as me, can empathise with transgender and non-binary people's struggle.
When you take the logic forward, it makes it really difficult to say anything other than 'live and let live' with regards to this situation. Yet at the same time, the whole thing seems so radically different, and to be honest was quite jarring when I first saw the pictures and videos. | |

The point you make about this not helping Oli is an interesting one, and was actually touched on by Dr. Phil in the video I mentioned. After speaking with Oli in depth, Phil basically said that Oli's issues with identity stem from the way that Oli's bullies had made them feel. Phil's argument was that by pursuing this, Oli was allowing the bullies to keep beating them down.
Oli on the other hand argued that this is what they really wanted, that they needed this to become stronger. From all of the posts I have seen since this has happened, Oli seems to feel exactly that as a result of it all.
I'm not saying Dr. Phil is necessarily a credible source as it seems to be a show that treads the Jerry Springer/Jeremy Kyle path. The interesting thing about the idea that someone is crying out for help by doing this (which I said myself) is that I am sure that family and friends of plenty of people who have transitioned genders have thought and said the same thing.
I suppose what I am saying is that as Oli is a consenting adult and this isn't harming anyone, it has probably been overblown. Any speculation we make about Oli's mental health is probably just the human desire to neatly package things into our own understanding of what could cause this. | |
