It's not guaranteed, especially when games come thick and fast. I'd hope we'd have learnt by now that confidence is absolutely key in football and gelling will become much easier if we're winning games. It becomes much harder, and only really gets mentioned as an issue, when things aren't going well. |  |

Not even ManUre got rid of their entire backroom staff and ownership strcure as well as every decent player in one summer in the middle of a pandemic..
Personally I suspect their is more to gelling than trying to comprehend what Cook and his cabal of minions are trying to do, whilst acommodating a few new players every week. Every new player probably is not living in their home right now and may be worrying about family settling in a strange environment - or living on the other side of the country.

I'd hope that we can all get the balance of being fully supportive in the ground (bar the odd tut) but have frank discussion in here.
This start is very worrying, but its definitely not the moment to be getting too upset by it, not just yet anyway.
Hopefully those posters that got a bid giddy with the positive feedback after the first 2 (actually pretty poor) games also calm down a bit too!

Gelling is in not way guaranteed! Look at Derby, Sheff Weds, etc. spent loads of money with no success.
We might not gel - but I’m confident that our owners and chairman etc won’t let it drift too long with things going as poorly as this. I think they accept that the start could well have its ups and downs, but they will not tolerate just downs! |  |

This is an excellent point, fortunately it looks like we have signed some real quality who over the course of a longer period than 3 games are surely capable of picking up a few wins. I mean we've all but managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory in each league game so far by being on the wrong side of game changing moments in each (woolf robbed, fraser pen miss, bonne empty net).
5 of our next 7 league games are at home. Despite the poor results so far, there's plenty of reasons to believe our current malaise will be a distant memory come October... |  |

Aren’t there two types/stages of gelling?
There’s the simple one of getting used to a new player next to you/ahead/behind etc. And we’ve got those combinations everywhere on the pitch and still from match to match with new players coming in. I think we’re right in the middle of that part.
Then there’s the overall gelling so that the team becomes greater than the sum of its parts. I think that’s what you’re really talking about with Man U where managers just couldn’t develop the team and get it to work.
The sooner we can get to the next part the better. We seem close to getting a first-choice team at least. |  |

With 16 players, new ownership and a new backroom I'm not even sure that we're at the stage of gelling. I've begun to hate that word.
We are so different. Unrecognisable even from 12 months ago that this is almost like taking a brand new business and just expecting it to work. It won't straight away. We know the ingredients exist, we just need to learn how to combine them to make a cake.
Gelling, or in business terms creating efficiencies come when you know what your your doing with your component parts.
Remember those interviews with the owners at the very start, they laid the land out then, it may not be this season. If it takes a couple to build something truly great then we have to trust a process.
We are on a new journey, we need to put previous dissapointment and expectation behind us to some extent. The worry is for me that Paul Cook has really now had a rotten start to his managerial tenure at town. We need to start seeing points to believe that the leadership is right to steer this ship on course.

Of course it isn't. If it was as simple as buying a bunch of players and expecting it to all work out great, Derby would be in the PL. Or more relevantly, we wouldn't be in L1.
Time isn't an automatic solution. Only hard work and good coaching/management will make a difference. Although we obviously need a bit of time to let that happen of course. |  |
