What a disaster we had with our last transfer window. 13:38 - Jan 31 with 2605 viewsBonneNIL

You have Fraser gone, Coulson gone, Barry gone with Piggott, and Harper also looking to be moved out and we have already replaced Hladky with Walton. The net result of what we did in the summer is we have changed manager and found ourselves in the middle of the same league. The press build-up of those signings, the likes of Edwards and Harper being world beaters, looking back on it is pretty embarrassing given the guys they replaced are playing regularly for teams in the league above.

Has any club in this league changed and spent so much to achieve so little? It's like groundhog day. Even our top scorer is a loanee from QPR. Take his goals away and we would be battling relegation. We have just seen another weekend of these "excellent signings" failing to show up and be replaced by loans again.

Is Ashton just a Poundland Marcus Evans? Who's going to take responsibility for this absolute cock up? What's coming in the summer, more signings no doubt, and more waste. Ashton seems very good at spending others' money.

Or alternatively, Cook told which players he wanted and Ashton went and got them.

Is that too simple?

His basic point is correct - that we spent a huge amount of money for this league under Cook & are left with an unbalanced squad. The only players we have & who are ours & look above average for this league are Walton (signed initially on loan because Hladky looked poor), Edmundson & Burns. Better coaching by McKenna has already made Town look a better unit, but still much work to do to turn Town into serious promotion contenders next season.

Oh come on you daft so and so. Take any team's leading goalscorers goals away and they are going to be in a spot of bother.

Town always wanted to sign Walton. It's not that we signed Hladky and then went oh no, we were always looking at 2 new keepers and Walton was the no 1 choice, he was also one of the hardest to pull off.

Couldon was only on loan and he'd been injured, that's hardly the clubs fault, injuries happen in football.

Fraser hasn't worked out but the club apprat to have made a profit on him, even if small he still a good player, he just hasn't fitted here.

So Walton Upgrade
Edmunson Upgrade
Morsy Upgrade
Bonne Upgrade and surely a deal to be done if Ipswich want it
Burns Upgrade

Harper signed for potential

Evans splits opinion but I'd say Upgrade.

Piggott hadn't had his chance yet do jury out.

Take out the 1st 6 games of tbe season where the squad qas getting to know each other and its a different picture

Some transfers work and many don't. It's nice to actually have some that have been decent, makes a change.

The subject and first line made your post plausible.

Then you ruined it by following the Ashton conspiracy theories.

Given the termination of Cook's contract - I'm pretty sure Ashton will be on the block pretty quickly if the owners feel he's to blame.

Bearing in mind Cook brought in 18 new players (including loans) he would have had to have been some kind of idiot if none of them were very good. Many of them look no more than average league 1 players, although some of that may be down to poor coaching rather than ability.

Relative to what we spent, of the 19 summer signings, 11 have been roughly what we expected or better (Walton, Edmundson, Burns, Penney, Morsy, Evans, Aluko, Chaplin, Celina, Bonne, Carroll), 2 are young enough that the jury is still out (Harper, Edwards), 4 never got a run because our squad was too big (Fraser, Pigott, Burgess, Hladky), one got injured (Coulson), one was a cheap academy kid loan (Barry).

Disasters? Think Pigott, Burgess and Hladky are the only real candidates.

Don’t be so dramatic.

We had a huge rebuild in the summer - we aren’t going to get that rebuild right in one window - and we will have to continue to shuffle the pack.

I’m sure come to summer we will shuffle once again - we are still building a balanced squad, and I think we will need the summer as well to do that.

And even with those, certainly Pigott and Hladky seemed like good signings at the time. Pretty much everyone was happy with us going for those two.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I think there were a few words of caution around Pigott, regarding his modest record prior to last season. If the things said about his (£10-12k) wages are true, he may well be the worst bit of business done in the Summer.

Yes, that's about right.

I would certainly give Pigott, and probably Burgess, more time to see what they can do. The latter looks like something of a panic buy at the moment.

Every thing in the original post is built of straw. You simply do not find world class players signing for a third tier club.

Serious blubbing....
has anyone actually thought we might have to get our wage bill down for ffp?? Walton's wages will not be that cheap baring in mind we have him from a prem club, undoubtedly we are paying him more now than the percentage we were paying when he was a loan player. I have heard that wages were over the ffp limit so we have had to cut back. So far we have done it without hitting the 1st 11. Releasing Nolan and sending Coulson frees up enough for possibly another in, but no point in getting more in unless it will improve the 1st 11.

That's the problem. The talk of Town building a "championship squad" while in the 3rd tier was fanciful. Most players capable of playing at that level are already there, so we over-paid for League One players (but bought nowhere near as badly as Hurst). This was always likely to be the case & it's one reason why it's hard to get out of this league. That's why loans can add a bit of quality. The skill is recruiting players who will fit into a manager's system (Cook didn't really do that) & making them an effective team. Cook didn't appear to have done that either, although if you generously exclude the first 6 league games, then Town took 24 points from Cook's last 14 League games, form which would put Town in 7th spot. Not really good enough, although Cook will argue that he would have got there given more time, like most football managers.
