If Le Pen wins in France 10:11 - Apr 9 with 5867 views | reusersfreekicks | It will be catastrophic for Europe, for Ukraine and, of course, for France. A Putin disciple in charge of a major western democracy. Almost too awful to contemplate

Agree....this is this usual way of things in France. She does well in the first round but loses in the run off. Macron will come though, just.

If Le Pen wins in France on 10:33 - Apr 9 with 3275 views | Churchman | She won’t win. No chance. Macron, despite being a tool and in need of a clean pair of trousers after the first round will win easily. He’s the least worst option for them. Looking at that weedy nonentity German bloke alongside rouble-loving incompetent Johnson, Italy where unless you’re corrupt you don’t get in, Western Europe politicians really are a dreadful shower.

That sounds like the same kind of confidence that has seen Trump and Johnson end up winning elections. I wouldn't count against France following the trend of giving control of their country to loons/incompetents. People are stupid.

Even if it were true, the consequences for Nato unity are serious. And Putin now has a clear excuse to attack poland "Even Macron said it- it a nazi state and needs denazification"

Macron is dreadful. Running about trying to look statesmanlike while grovelling to Putin and longing to resume his war with the U.K. he has a track record of letting his mouth run away with itself - look at the harm he did to the vaccination programme with his assault on AZ to mask his own failure. It’s fair to say he was a key part of the campaign caused the death of 1000s with that. https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/feb/07/doubts-cast-over-astrazeneca-jab As for the Poland spat, his timing is dreadful, regardless of whether he’s right or not. It sends all the wrong messages. Add in the Hungary dictator, the lack of contributions to NATO by most members, it can only encourage Putin. NATO needs to get its act together and so do the west’s politicians if Putin is to be defeated in the long term. Frankly, bar a few countries like Poland, I don’t think there is the will or the energy and maybe Macron’s nonsense is an early sign of that. [Post edited 9 Apr 2022 11:20]

The far left have said that this time, although they won’t vote Le Pen in the second round they won’t support Macron to keep her out.

It must be a concern that these political views are so popular.

In more normal times you would think Macron only has to finish second to be elected. In the second round you vote against the one you least want to be President. Have a feeling this time that many will abstain from voting in the second round. Think it will be much closer than last time but Macron will scrape in.

If Le Pen wins in France on 12:11 - Apr 9 with 2972 views | ElephantintheRoom | Pourquoi? IF she wins it means she’ll have been voted for by the majority of French voters unlike in the UK for example where corrupt and self-interested politicians can lie their way into power and break the law with impunity knowing the mindless minority will still keep them elected in their safe seats. She’s also promised to take back control - which as you know is highly attractive - especially in a country that is taking in 10 x as many immigrants as Plague Island. But you can relax - she’ll come second again

The majority (of those eligible and who turned out) voted for Brexit. There are "democracies" around the world who vote in terrible leaders. Why would the possibility NOT worry you, simply because it would be democratic?

Ignoring NorwichintheRoom, it certainly worries me. Macron might be a pint sized egotistical idiot that married his granny, but the last thing we need in this world is Le Pen. With a madman like Putin on the loose, the west needs to be unified in its response which means there’s no room for somebody like her. There is no room for Johnson either, but on that score at least crumpletrousers and the rouble-dippers (good name for a band!) will be gone in a couple of years and everyone knows it. We along with most of the rest of the world seem lumbered with rubbish politicians at the moment.

Much as you may not like it, who other countries vote for is really up to them. They may even have a slightly better understanding of the issues and the French voting system than an ill-informed Guardian reader. As a French resident Id be amazed if she gets in - but if she does it’s because the majority of French people want the illusion she’s offering. And just as with Macron at the helm it will make very little difference to people in the UK

It worries you that the French might vote for someone in a free election and come up with an answer you don’t like ? Have you any idea how breathtakingly idiotic that sounds? Perhaps we should ready our aircraft carrier with no aircraft, the tanks too noisy to use and de-Nazify the place?

I was living in Paris in 2002 and when her father got through to the 2nd round it shocked everyone. A number of things conspired, a large number of candidates spreading the vote for the socialist candidate, voter apathy etc. There was no way Le Pen was going to be voted in - Chirac won 82% of the vote even with corruption allegations hanging over him - but the impact was huge. Things are closer this time. Marine has worked hard on her image and distance the party from historical negatives. Voter apathy will play a part again but hopefully that will change for the 2nd round.

Not prepared to answer the question then. Aside from it's "the will of the misinformed people". Hmm.
