Macron is dreadful. Running about trying to look statesmanlike while grovelling to Putin and longing to resume his war with the U.K. he has a track record of letting his mouth run away with itself - look at the harm he did to the vaccination programme with his assault on AZ to mask his own failure. It’s fair to say he was a key part of the campaign caused the death of 1000s with that.

As for the Poland spat, his timing is dreadful, regardless of whether he’s right or not. It sends all the wrong messages. Add in the Hungary dictator, the lack of contributions to NATO by most members, it can only encourage Putin.
NATO needs to get its act together and so do the west’s politicians if Putin is to be defeated in the long term. Frankly, bar a few countries like Poland, I don’t think there is the will or the energy and maybe Macron’s nonsense is an early sign of that. [Post edited 9 Apr 2022 11:20]

In more normal times you would think Macron only has to finish second to be elected. In the second round you vote against the one you least want to be President.

I was living in Paris in 2002 and when her father got through to the 2nd round it shocked everyone. A number of things conspired, a large number of candidates spreading the vote for the socialist candidate, voter apathy etc. There was no way Le Pen was going to be voted in - Chirac won 82% of the vote even with corruption allegations hanging over him - but the impact was huge.
Things are closer this time. Marine has worked hard on her image and distance the party from historical negatives. Voter apathy will play a part again but hopefully that will change for the 2nd round. |  |
