Aluko must start the first game 17:55 - Jul 23 with 2295 viewsitfcsuth

His pre season has been terrific. West Ham was terrific, brilliant goal V Palace and changed the game today.

His intelligence, positional awareness, ability on the ball and understanding of his role is better than anyone in the no.10 role right now.

Thought Harness looked off the pace a little, understandable given he’s had 4 or 5 days with the squad - will take a little bit of time for him to understand his role.

Possibly my favourite player.

If I’m not too old to have one.

The guy is a cut above what we’ve had in most recent years for that type of player

Absolute quality - bizarre how those technical type of players seem to have so much time on the ball and just make the simple stuff look easy

One of the standout players of last season imo. Burns and Woolf rightly got a lot of attention, but I felt Aluko flew a little bit under the radar. He can change a game and that's priceless.

He’s somebody - as can happen in football whose stats don’t reflect his importance to the side.

A staggeringly good football brain at this level, and has the ability to follow.

Sone's got the ball under control (and done his marker) before it's even reached him!

(That would make a good chant, but finding a rhythm for it might be problematic.)

stats last season do not back that up though. What was it, 2/3 goals and a couple of assists? Need a LOT more from our number 10's this season if we are going to compete.

Think there will be more from him this season. We are missing a real creative midfielder. Chaplin doesn't cut it
Too slow.

Chaplin is a good finisher but is lacking in creativity. Aluko is very skilful but didn't translate that into very many assists or goals last season. We really need a combination in the front 3 that has an understanding and works well together. I would go with Jackson, Ladapo and Chaplin together to start but have Aluko, Harness and John-Jules all as options if it isn't working. It is ultimately about developing partnerships that work all over the pitch.

The assists figure is a bit of a nonsense because apparently the laser like pass away at Gillingham that led to Bonnes tap in doesn’t count as an assist. Yes it would be nice to see more goals but his use of the ball is second to none.

I was saying this half way through last year.

He looks after the ball, makes himself available, makes half a yard and looks for positive options.

Crucial.

I would go so far as to say that I would have been more disappointed if we had lost him this summer than I am with us losing Celina.

He is such a class act, and with a better central midfield this year to play off, I am expecting even more from him this season.

I think he's too quick in the sense that he's often going for the instant pass but more often than not it's too hurried and doesn't reach a team mate. That was certainly the case at Millwall on Saturday. Having said that, I did think he improved towards the end of last season, and is unlikely to play a team able to press as well as Millwall this coming season.

Bit of a dilemma as I would 100% start Aluko, I don't think he's ever had a poor game in a Town shirt, I love him on the ball he's such a classy footballer. But I would also 100% start Chaplin as I think he's our MVP right now and such a goal threat, best finisher at the club and his movement is excellent. That leaves Harness on the bench probably, not necessarily the wrong thing but I would think he'll be starting before too long.

Aluko won't be starting 46 games this season, maybe not even 25, but should definitely play on Saturday. Think we saw quite neatly at Millwall that we need a Celina or Aluko in the starting XI most of the time to bind the play and get us flowing. Harness will take up good positions in that gap between oppo defence & midfield, we've seen that already, but doubt he'll take care of the ball as effectively and same goes for Chaplin. For me if we end up with Celina/Aluko/Harness/Chaplin as the options for those two positions (with Edwards if we're going wider) then we have a bit of everything and it's looking very nice.

Yeah we'll definitely need a lot of rotation, it's an art that will be the make or break of our season I think. He's got Morsy + 1 from 2 senior contenders centrally (Ball and Evans) which leaves Harper and El Miz living off scraps / cups / loan which is fine, He's got 2 from 3 or 4 ahead of that (Aluko, Chaplin, Harness, perhaps Celina in time, let's see) which is going to take some thought to get that right. Then probably 1 from 3 ahead of that in Jackson, Ladapo, J-J. Or if we go with 2 then one of the 'number 10's' miss out.

Cook was guilty of over rotating as he searched for his preferred side, but it meant players being rotated out of form at times. Chaplin is a good example of that when he seemed to be finding his feet and was left out. It's a really ard one to get the balance right. Aluko isn't getting any younger and will definitely have to be managed closely. I can't see Edwards playing much football sadly, but he doesn't suit this system and I can only really see him coming in if we switch to a back 4 which I wouldn't say is likely right now.
