Why only football? 19:14 - Sep 10 with 2810 views | GeoffSentence | I've been out of the country and have missed a lot of the detail of the news, so maybe someone can explain why everything seems to have continued as normal, cricket continues, rugby plays on, horses race, shops, pubs and everything else is open as normal, but football ha been cancelled for the weekend. Why the special case? It has worked out pretty well for me though, thanks to hopeless baggage handlers at Luton I would have missed this one, but it still seems odd that only football is canceelled.

Why only football? on 19:20 - Sep 10 with 2374 views | xrayspecs | Most sports have cancelled something as a mark of respect. On Friday, second day of Test and round two of the golf were cancelled as a mark of respect, both resumed today. Racing was abandoned on Thursday and cancelled Friday. Hopefully, football cancellations will be the one round of fixtures due to be played this weekend.
Why only football? on 19:33 - Sep 10 with 2318 views | HighgateBlue | It's an absolute joke. They've badly misjudged it. The England cricket team, with the crown on their badge are playing today, bold as brass. Armbands on, marks of respect all round, then get on with the game. And yet the FA have told village teams that they're not even allowed to have friendlies. Utterly ridiculous, and no logical basis for it whatsoever. Local teams can't play today or tomorrow, somewhat randomly, but West Ham could play a Europa Conference game just hours after the announcement of the Queen's death, when horse racing cancelled in the middle of meetings, understandably, on the day itself. It's like they're tossing a coin to make these decisions. And despite so many football fans of differing political persuasions disagreeing with this decision, I've seen no article daring to make that point, and questioning why football is the only sport cancelling all activity (even at the grassroots level) for the whole weekend. The queen was a sports fan, and has a number of Olympians and international sportsmen in her family. I'm sure she'd think this is absolute bobbins.
Why only football? on 19:41 - Sep 10 with 2268 views | MattinLondon | Wasn’t the Queen something to do with the FA? Or had a good relationship with them? I can only think that football cancellations is due to a paranoid fear of being in the wrong. Let’s face it, the image of football isn’t great and if fixtures were to go ahead, then the tabloids could well have been out in force condemning football and it’s fans for enjoying themselves. I wasn’t in favour of cancellations - I think it was the wrong decision but I can understand why that decision was made.
Why only football? on 19:58 - Sep 10 with 2223 views | Marshalls_Mullet | The FA made the call early, and in my view got it wrong. I think Prince William has a role at the FA, so maybe they felt obliged.

I stand corrected. My point remains that a lot of sports have stopped as a mark of respect.

I think there was a huge amount of concern around respect not being shown. They took the easy option to save any potential issues. We all know there are some stupid idiots out there, sadly.
Why only football? on 22:33 - Sep 10 with 1991 views | BlueBadger | Football is, for a lot of commentators, a easy target when it comes to pearl-clutching over moral degeneracy and 'lack of respect'. The EFL, PL and FA were probably in a tricky 'damn if you do, dammed if you don't' positions.

Wasn't the Arsenal match already underway when her death was announced? Surely there wasn't a silence?

Why only football? on 23:38 - Sep 10 with 1850 views | Coastalblue | The Prince Of Wales actually owns the Oval, so I can't imagine there would have been play in the test if there was the remotest chance of offending anybody. I actually thought the cricket got it spot on, time for refelection, the (new) anthem and advertising hoardings not showing adverts but a memorial instead.

I think they tried to have a minutes silence at the start of the 2nd half.

Rugby and cricket generally represented a much lower risk. I love football, but appreciate that the decision was made on the basis that the constant moron element would make themselves heard. It’s just kicked the can down the road, but I suppose it will be less raw when the inevitable happens at certain venues next week.
Why only football? on 06:51 - Sep 11 with 1565 views | braveblue | Various others cancelled over past few days. Football is the National sport. It’s only on round of games. Cannot understand why people get so upset about it. Just look forward to Tuesday.
Why only football? on 08:16 - Sep 11 with 1436 views | ArnieM | The International Tattoo in Birmingham had been cancelled for the whole weekend. Why only football? on 08:18 - Sep 11 with 1434 views | Mookamoo | Because football fans can't be trusted. We're seen as thugs and hooligans. Other sports don't have continued ongoing levels of disorderly behaviour (or at least reported incidents). Do they have point? Are violent incidents now on the increase again and has that influenced their decision? Even at sleepy old Portman Road there have been already been clashes this season, most notably with Colchester. I'm not saying they're correct, but those decision makers can't afford to risk, even a small display of discontent and disrespect. Football is still desperately trying to prove it can be trusted after the 1970/80s, Heysel etc and even despite all the evidence to the contrary, Hillsborough. I suspect the decision to postpone this weekend just came down to blue collar vs white collar. Or even worse, those with blue collars wanting to sit on the same table as the white collars.
